The
National Medical Association has named
Eddie L. Hoover, M.D. as the new editor of
the Journal of the National Medical
Association (JNMA), one of the nation's
premier medical journals.
Dr. Hoover
succeeds Paul A. Kelly, M.D. as editor.
The Journal of the National Medical Association
has been published continuously since 1909, and
is the oldest and largest medical journal
dedicated to medical and scientific issues
affecting African Americans and underserved
populations.
Dr. Kelly
served as JNMA's editor for more than ten years,
during which time circulation grew to more than
40,000 from 15,000 readers. Dr. Kelly is
also credited with increasing the Journal's
advertising revenues, and raising the number of
reviewers and manuscripts.
Dr. Hoover
said, "I am deeply honored with this appointment
and will strive to continue the outstanding
tradition of the Journal as set forth by Dr.
Kelly and his staff in honor of the Journal's
founders, Drs. Calvin Sampson and
Montague Cobb. We will endeavor to help our
young people become better authors, continue to
serve our constituency abroad and work to make
the Journal the media of choice for manuscripts
related to minority health issues, including
access, education, scientific advancements, best
office practices, medical economics and the
preservation of our history."

Dr. Hoover
brings to JNMA a wealth of personal and
professional experience. He is is
currently Professor of Surgery at SUNY-Buffalo
and Chief of Surgery at the Buffalo V.A.
Medical Center, Prior to assuming his
current positions, Dr. Hoover was Professor and
Chairman of Surgery at Meharry Medical
College in Nashville, Tennessee, and the
State University of New York at Buffalo.
Dr. Hoover
received his BA degree from UNC-Chapel Hill,
his M.D. from Duke University, and
completed residencies in general and
cardiothoracic surgery at Duke and the New
York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center.
An accomplished author, Dr. Hoover has published
more than 145 manuscripts, and currently serves
on the editorial boards of the Annals of
Thoracic Surgery and the Archives
of Surgery and Surgical Rounds.
