2010

We mourn the loss of service personnel killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our prayers are with their families and loved ones.

The following is a list of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in February 2010, as reported by the Department of Defense.

Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire

Staff Sgt. William S. Ricketts, 27, of Corinth, Mississippi, died February 27 at Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. Ricketts was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies of Combat Wounds

Sgt. William C. Spencer, 40, of Tacoma, Washington, died February 25 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds sustained February 20 while supporting combat operations at Combat Outpost Marez, Iraq. Spencer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 146th Field Artillery Regiment, Olympia, Washington.

Soldier Killed in Vehicle Roll-Over

Cpl. Daniel T. O'Leary, 23, of Youngsville, North Carolina, died February 23 in Fallujah, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle roll-over. O'Leary was assigned to the 307th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marine Killed in Combat in Helmand Province

Three Marines died February 21 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  Killed were:

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  They were:

Lance Cpl. Adam D. Peak, 25, of Florence, Kentucky.

Lance Cpl. Eric L. Ward, 19, of Redmond, Washington.

Also killed was
 
Lance Cpl. Matthias N. Hanson, 20, of Buffalo, Kentucky, died February 21 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Hanson was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier

Sgt. Marcos Gorra, 22, of North Bergen, New Jersey, died February 21 at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. Gorra was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Soldier Killed by IED

Pfc. JR Salvacion, 27, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, died February 21 at Senjaray, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Salvacion was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Helicopter Crew Killed in Hard Landing

The crew of a OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter died February 21 in Qayyarah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their helicopter made a hard landing.  The soldiers were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 230th Cavalry Regiment, Louisville, Tennessee.  Killed were:

Capt. Marcus R. Alford, 28, of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Chief Warrant Officer Billie J. Grinder, 25, of Gallatin, Tennessee.

Enemy Claims Marine in Helmand Province

Staff Sgt. Christopher W. Eckard, 30, of Hickory, North Carolina, died February 20 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Eckard was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Two Marines Killed in Helmand Province

Two Marines died February 19 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Killed were:


Lance Cpl. Joshua H. Birchfield, 24, of Westville. Birchfield was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.


Cpl. Gregory S. Stultz, 22, of Brazil, Indiana.  Stultz was assigned to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Feb 18

 U.S. MARINES

Four Marines Killed in Helmand Province

Four Marines died February 18 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province.  Killed were:

Two members of the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. They were:

Lance Cpl. Larry M. Johnson, 19, of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Sgt. Jeremy R. McQueary, 27, of Columbus, Indiana.

Also killed were:

Lance Cpl. Kielin T. Dunn, 19, of Chesapeake, Virginia.  Dunn was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Pfc. Kyle J. Coutu, 20, of Providence, Rhode Island. Coutu was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Fighting Claims Marine in Helmand Province

Pfc. Eric D. Currier, 21, of Londonderry, New Hampshire, died February 17 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Currier was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Naval Office Dies While Supporting Operations

Petty Officer 1st Class Sean L. Caughman, 43, of Fort Worth, Texas, died February 16, while supporting operations in Kuwait.  Caughman was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Twenty-Two.

Two Marines Killed in Helmand Province

Two Marines died February 16 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Killed were:

Lance Cpl. Alejandro J. Yazzie, 23, of Rock Point, Arizona. Yazzie was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Lance Cpl. Noah M. Pier, 25, of Charlotte, North Carolina.  Pier was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Pfc. Jason H. Estopinal, 21, of Dallas, Georgia, died February 15 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Estopinal was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Cpl. Jacob H. Turbett, 21, of Canton, Michigan, died February 13 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Turbett was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 U.S. ARMY

Three Soldiers Killed by IED

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device February 13 in Zhari Province, Afghanistan. Killed were:

Spc. Bobby J. Pagan, 23, of Austin, Texas.

Staff Sgt. John A. Reiners, 24, of Lakeland, Florida.

Sgt. Jeremiah T. Wittman, 26, of Darby, Montana.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad

Pfc. Adriana Alvarez, 20, of San Benito, Texas, died February 10 in Baghdad, of injuries sustained while supporting combat operations. Alvarez was assigned to the 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

IED Claims Soldier

Sgt. Adam J. Ray, 23, of Louisville, Kentucky, died February 9 in southern Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Ray was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Pfc. Charles A. Williams, 29, of Fair Oaks, California, died February 7 at Camp Nathan Smith, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained while supporting combat operations.  Williams was assigned to the 97th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, Fort Riley, Kansas.

IED Claims Soldier in Bala Murghab

Sgt. Dillon B. Foxx, 22, of Traverse City, Michigan, died February 5 in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.  Foxx was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

 U.S. ARMY

Three Soldiers Killed in Pakistan by IED

Three soldiers died February 3 in Timagara, Pakistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Two members of the 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  They were:

Sgt. 1st Class David J. Hartman, 27, of Okinawa, Japan.

Sgt. 1st Class Matthew S. Sluss-Tiller, 35, of Callettsburg, Kentucky.

Also killed was

Staff Sgt. Mark A. Stets, 39, of El Cajon, California.  Stets was assigned to the 8th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne), 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Afghanistan

 U.S. ARMY

Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Zabul Province

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device Feb. 2 in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. Killed were:

Capt. Daniel Whitten, 28, of Grimes, Iowa.

Pfc. Zachary G. Lovejoy, 20, of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Michael L. Freeman, Jr., 21, of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, died February 1 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Freeman was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
