We mourn the loss of service personnel killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our prayers are with their families and loved ones.

The following is a list of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in October 2009, as reported by the Department of Defense.

Sgt. Cesar B. Ruiz, 26, of San Antonio, Texas, died October 31 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Ruiz was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans.

Soldier Dies in Vehicle Rollover

Pfc. Lukas C. Hopper, 20, of Merced, California, died October 30, southeast of Karadah, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle roll-over. Hopper was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. Christopher M. Cooper, 28, of Oceanside, California, died October 30 in Babil province, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Cooper was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry, 172nd Infantry Brigade, Schweinfurt, Germany.

AL Guard Member Dies of a Non-Combat Incident

Spc. Adrian L. Avila, 19, of Opelika, Alabama, died October 29 at Khabari Crossing, Kuwait, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related accident.   Avila was assigned to the 1343rd Chemical Company, 151st Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Battalion, 115th Fires Brigade of the Alabama Army National Guard, in Fort Payne, Alabama.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Cody R. Stanley, 21, of Rosanky, Texas, died October 28 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Stanley was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

NM Guard Member Dies in Non-Combat Incident

Spc. Joseph L. Gallegos, 39, of Questa, New Mexico, died Oct. 28 in Tallil, Iraq, in a non-combat related incident. Gallegos was assigned to the 720th Transportation Company, New Mexico Army National Guard, in Las Vegas, New Mexico.


 U.S. AIR FORCE

Airman Dies of Non-Combat Related Medical Cause

Frank R. Walker, 66, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died of non-combat related medical causes October 28 at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan.  Walker was assigned to the 72nd Civil Engineering Directorate, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma.

Attack on Vehicle Kills Soldier in Kandahar

Pfc. Brian R. Bates, Jr., 20, of Gretna, Louisiana., died October 27 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Bates was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Dies of Injuries Sustained in Non-Combat Related Incident 

Spc. Robert K. Charlton, 22, of Malden, Missouri, died October 27 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident October 23 in Wardak, Afghanistan. Charlton was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.


Soldier Dies in a Non-Combat Related Incident

Maj. David L. Audo, 35, of Saint Joseph, Illinois, died October 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident.  Audo was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 22nd Military Police Battalion, 6th Military Police Group, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Seven Soldiers Killed in IED Attack on Vehicle

Seven soldiers died October 27 in Arghandab Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.  Killed were:

Sgt. Fernando Delarosa, 24, of Alamo, Texas.

Staff Sgt. Luis M. Gonzalez, 27, of South Ozone Park, New York.

Sgt. Dale R. Griffin, 29, of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Sgt. Issac B. Jackson, 27, of Plattsburg, Missouri.

Spc. Jared D. Stanker, 22, of Evergreen Park, Illinois.

Pfc. Christopher I. Walz, 25, of Vancouver, Washington.

Sgt. Patrick O. Williamson, 24, of Broussard, Louisiana.

Four Marines Killed in Helicopter Collision

Four Marines died October 26 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Killed were:

Two members of the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.  They were:

Cpl. Gregory M.W. Fleury, 23, of Anchorage, Alaska.

Capt. Kyle R. Van De Giesen, 29, of North Attleboro, Massachusetts.

Also killed were two members of the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.  They were:

Capt. Eric A. Jones, 29, of Westchester, New York.

Capt. David S. Mitchell, 30, of Loveland, Ohio.


Seven Service Personnel Killed in Helicopter Crash

Seven service members died October 26 of wounds suffered when the MH-47 helicopter they were aboard crashed in Darreh-ye Bum, Afghanistan.  Killed were five soldiers assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Regiment (Airborne), Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.  They were:

Sgt. Josue E. Hernandez Chavez, 23, of Reno, Nevada.

Chief Warrant Officer Niall Lyons, 40, of Spokane, Washington.

Staff Sgt. Shawn H. McNabb, 24, of Terrell, Texas.

Chief Warrant Officer Michael P. Montgomery, 36, of Savannah, Georgia.

Sgt. Nikolas A. Mueller, 26, of Little Chute, Wisconsin.

Also killed were two soldiers assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  They were:

Staff Sgt. Keith R. Bishop, 28, of Medford, New York.

Sgt. 1st Class David E. Metzger, 32, of San Diego, California.

Enemy Action in Kunar Province Claims Soldier

Sgt. Eduviges G. Wolf, 24, of Hawthorne, California, died October 25 in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked her vehicle with a rocket propelled grenade.  Wolf was assigned to the 704th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


IED Attach Claims MP in Laghman Province

Spc. Brandon K. Steffey, 23, of Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, died October 25 in Laghman Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Steffey was assigned to the 178th Military Police Detachment, 89th Military Police Brigade, III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas.

Pfc. Devin J. Michel, 19, of Stockton, Illinois, died October 24 in Zhari Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.  Michael was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Two member of the 569th Mobility Augmentation Company, 4th Engineer Battalion, Fort Carson, Colorado, died October 23 in Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Killed were:

Pfc. Kimble A. Han, 30, of Lehi, Utah.

Spc. Eric N. Lembke, 25, of Tampa, Florida.

Lance Cpl. David R. Baker, 22, of Painesville, Ohio, died Oct. 20 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  Baker was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Staff Sgt. Bradley Espinoza, 26, of Mission, Texas, died October 19 in Qwest, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Espinoza was assigned to 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Pfc. Daniel J. Rivera, 22, of Rochester, New York, died October 18 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.  Rivera was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Killed by IED in Argahndab

Spc. Michael A. Dahl Jr., 23, of Moreno Valley, California, died October 17 in Argahndab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Dahl was assigned to 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

IED Kills MP in Kandahar

Sgt. Christopher M. Rudzinski, 28, of Rantoul, Illinois, died October 16 near Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Rudzinski was assigned to 293rd Military Police Company, 385th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), Fort Stewart, Georgia.


IED Attack Claims Two Soldiers


Two members of the 143rd Infantry Detachment, Austin, Texas died October 16 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Killed were:

Spc. Anthony G. Green, 28, of Matthews, North Carolina.

Staff Sgt. Chris N. Staats, 32, of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Marine Killed in Combat in Farah Province

Lance Cpl. Alfonso Ochoa, Jr., 20, of Armona, California, died October 10 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan.  Ochoa was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

IED Claims MN Guard Member

Spc. George W. Cauley, 24, of Walker, Minnesota, died October 10 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device on October 7 in Helmand Province. Cauley was assigned to the 114th Truck Company of the Minnesota Army National Guard in Duluth, Minnesota.

Staff Sgt. Aaron J. Taylor, 27, of Bovey, Minnesota, died October 9 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Taylor was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 372, Marine Wing Support Group 37, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Sgt. Thomas D. Rabjohn, 39, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, died October 3 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated during an attempt to disarm it.  Rabjohn was assigned to the 363rd Explosive Ordnance Detachment, Coolidge, Arizona.


Enemy Action Claims Eight Soldiers in Kamdesh

Eight members of the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado, died October 3 in Kamdesh, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their contingency outpost with small arms, rocket-propelled grenade and indirect fires. Killed were:

Sgt. Justin T. Gallegos, 27, of Tucson, Arizona.

Spc. Christopher T. Griffin, 24, of Kincheloe, Michigan.

Sgt. Joshua M. Hardt, 24, of Applegate, California.

Sgt. Joshua J. Kirk, 30, of South Portland, Maine.

Spc. Stephan L. Mace, 21, of Lovettsville, Virginia.

Staff Sgt. Vernon W. Martin, 25 of Savannah, Georgia.

Pfc. Kevin C. Thomson, 22, of Reno, Nevada.

Two Soldiers Killed in Enemy Attack

Two soldiers died October 2 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked their unit using small arms fire. Killed were:

Pfc. Brandon A. Owens, 21, of Memphis, Tennessee. Owens was assigned to the 118th Military Police Company, 503rd Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Sgt. Aaron M. Smith, 25, of Manhattan, Kansas. Smith was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Enemy Action Claims WI Guard Member

Sgt. Ryan C. Adams, 26 of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, died October 2 in Logar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle using rocket-propelled grenade fire. Adams was assigned to the 91st Engineer Company (Sapper), Wisconsin Army National Guard, Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

Sgt. Roberto D. Sanchez, 24 of Satellite Beach, Florida, died October 1 in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.  Sanchez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield Georgia.


Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire in Wardak

Spc. Russell S. Hercules Jr., 22 of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, died October 1 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire  Hercules was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


Enemy Attack on Camp Claims Soldier
 

Spc. Paul E. Andersen, 49, of Dowagiac, Michigan, died October 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his camp using indirect fire. Andersen was assigned to the 855th Quartermaster Company, South Bend, Indiana.
