2009

We mourn the loss of service personnel killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our prayers are with their families and loved ones.

The following is a list of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in August 2009, as reported by the Department of Defense.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. David R. Hall, 31, of Elyria, Ohio, died August 31 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Hull was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 U.S. ARMY

Two Soldiers Killed by IED

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington died August 31 in Shuyene Sufia, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive deviceKilled were:

Spc. Jonathan D. Welch, 19, of Yorba Linda, California.

Pfc. Jordan M. Brochu, 20, of Cumberland, Maine.

Two Soldiers Killed in Enemy Attack in Paktika

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia,  died August 29 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when they were shot by enemy forces August 28 while conducting combat operations.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Jason S. Dahlke, 29, of Orlando, Florida.

Pfc. Eric W. Hario, 19, of Monroe, Michigan.

Soldier Killed by IED in Logar Province

Spc. Abraham S. Wheeler III, 22, of Columbia, South Carolina, died August 28 in Logar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Wheeler was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Two OR Guard Members Killed in Enemy Attack

Two members of the 41st Special Troops Battalion, 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Oregon Army National Guard in Portland died August 28 in Rashid, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their vehicle with an explosively formed penetrator.  Killed were:

Pvt. Taylor D. Marks, 19, of Monmouth, Oregon.

Sgt. Earl D. Werner, 38, of Mondovi, Wisconsin.

Soldier Killed by IED in Enemy Attack

Pfc. Matthew E. Wildes, 18, of Hammond, Louisiana, died August 27 in Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Wildes was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Donald J. Hogan, 20, of San Clemente, California, died August 26 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Hogan was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Falls to Enemy Fire

Staff Sgt. Kurt R. Curtiss, 27, of Murray, Utah, died August 26 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he was shot while his unit was supporting Afghan security forces during an enemy attack.  Curtiss was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Four Soldiers Killed in IED Attack

Four members of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington, died August 25 in southern Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Capt. John L. Hallett III, 30, of California.

Capt. Cory J. Jenkins, 30, of Arizona.

Sgt. 1st Class Ronald W. Sawyer, 38, of Trenton, Missouri.

Pfc. Dennis M. Williams, 24, of Federal Way, Washington.

Soldier Killed in Enemy Attack in Muhallah

2nd Lt. Joseph D. Fortin, 22, of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, died August 23 in Muhallah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.  Fortin was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier

Staff Sgt. Andrew T. Lobosco, 29, of Somerville, New Jersey, died August 22 in Yakhchal, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit.  Lobosco was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Soldier Killed in Vehicle Rollover 

Cpl. Darby T. Morin, 25, of Victoria, Canada, died August 22 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. Morin was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Kunar Province

Sgt. Matthew L. Ingram, 25, of Pearl, Mississippi, died August 21 in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, and his unit came under small arms fire from enemy forces.  Ingram was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Pfc. Brian M. Wolverton, 21, of Oak Park, California, died August 20 in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with indirect fire.  Wolverton was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.


IED Claims Soldier in Wardak Province

Spc. Justin R. Pellerin, 21, of Boscawen, New Hampshire, died August 20 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Pellerin was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Soldier Killed at Kandahar Airfield

Spc. Paul E. Dumont, Jr., 23, of Williamsburg, Virginia, died August 19 at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident.  Dumont was assigned to the 149th Transportation Company, 10th Transportation Battalion, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Iraq

 U.S. ARMY

Enemy Attack Claims Soldier

Pfc. William Z. Vanosdol, 23, of Pinson, Alabama, died August 19 at Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy rocket fire struck his quarters. Vanosdol was assigned to the 172nd Support Battalion, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Marine Killed in Helman Province

Gunnery Sgt. Adam F. Benjamin, 34, of Garfield, Ohio, died August 18 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Benjamin was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Claims Soldier in Kabul

Army 1st Sgt. Jose S.N. Crisostomo, 59, of Inarajan, Guam, died August 18 in Kabul, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Crisostomo was assigned to International Security Assistance Force Kabul, Kabul, Afghanistan.


IED Kills Two Soldiers in Paktika Province 

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska died August 18 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Clayton P. Bowen, 29, of San Antonio, Texas.

Pfc. Morris L. Walker, 23, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.


Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Arghandab

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington died August 18 in Arghandab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their unit. Killed were:

Spc. Troy O. Tom, 21, of Shiprock, New Mexico.

Pfc. Jonathan C. Yanney, 20, of Litchfield, Minnesota.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Leopold F. Damas, 26, of Floral Park, New York, died August 17 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Damas was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. Matthew D. Hastings, 23, of Claremore, Oklahoma, died August 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Hastings was assigned to the 582nd Medical Logistics Company, 1st Medical Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received on Patrol

Sgt. 1st Class William B. Woods, Jr., 31, of Chesapeake, Virginia, died August 16 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds suffered when he was shot August 14 while on patrol in Ghanzi, Afghanistan.  Woods was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Glen Arm, Maryland.


IED Claims Solder in Herat

Cpl. Nicholas R. Roush, 22, of Middleville, Michigan, died August 16 in Herat, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Roush was assigned to the 1st Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marines Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard, 21, of New Portland, Maine, died August 14 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Bernard was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.

Spc. Richard A. Walters Jr., 41, of Cleveland, Ohio, died August 10 in Ali Al Salem, Kuwait, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Walters was assigned to the 14th Combat Support Hospital, Fort Benning, Georgia.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Bruce E. Ferrell, 21, of Perdido, Alabama, died Aug. 10 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Ferrell was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Staff Sgt. Tara J. Smith, 33, of Nashville, North Carolina, died August 8 in Bagram, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident that occurred August 4 at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan,.  Smith was assigned to the 50th Signal Battalion, 35th Signal Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Dennis J. Burrow, 23, of Naples, Florida, died August 7, 2009 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Burrow was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


Marine Killed in Kapisa Province 

Capt. Matthew C. Freeman, 29, of Richmond Hill, Georgia, died August 7 while supporting combat operations in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan.  Freeman was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Four Marines Killed in Farah Province

Four Marines died August  6 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan.  Killed were three members of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.  They were:

Lance Cpl. James D. Argentine, 22, of Farmingdale, New York.

Lance Cpl. Travis T. Babine, 20, of San Antonio, Texas.

Sgt. Jay M. Hoskins, 24, of Paris, Texas. 
  
Also killed was:

Cpl. Christian A. Guzman Rivera, 21, of Homestead, Florida. Guzman Rivera was assigned to the 3rd Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Capt. Ronald G. Luce Jr., 27, of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Four members of the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado, died August 1 in Mushan Village, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked their patrol with improvised explosive devices and rocket-propelled grenades. Killed were:

Pvt. Patrick S. Fitzgibbon, 19, of Knoxville, Tennessee. 

Pfc. Richard K. Jones, 21, of Person, North Carolina.

Cpl. Jonathan M. Walls, 27, of West Lawn, Pennsylvania.
