2009

We mourn the loss of service personnel killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our prayers are with their families and loved ones.

The following is a list of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in March 2009, as reported by the Department of Defense.

Marine's Death Attributed to Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Nelson M. Lantigua, 20, of Miami, Florida, died March 31 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq. Lantigua was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10 Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Incident near Tikrit

Sgt. Devin C. Poche, 25, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, died March 31 at Contingency Operating Base Speicher, near Tikrit, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident.  Poche was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Two Soldiers Killed by Insurgent Posing as an Afghan Soldier

Two soldiers died March 27 when an insurgent posing as an Afghan National Army soldier opened fire on personnel assigned to Combined Security Transition Command - Afghanistan at Camp Shaheen, Mazar-E-Sharif, Afghanistan. Killed were:

Lt. Florence B. Choe, 35, of El Cajon, California.

Lt. j.g. Francis L. Toner IV, 26, of Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Soldier's Death Due to Non-Combat Related Incident

Staff Sgt. Raphael A. Futrell, 26, of Anderson, South Carolina, died March 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident.  Futrell was assigned to the 13th Military Police Detachment, 728th Military Police Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, Fort Shafter, Hawaii.

Fighting Claims Marine in Helmand Province

Corporals Anthony L. Williams, 21, of Oxford, Pennsylvania, and Michael W. Ouellette, 28, of Manchester, New Hampshire, died March 22 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. They were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Resulting from Non-Combat Related Incident

Pfc. Adam J. Hardt, 19, of Avondale, Arizona, died March 22, at Forward Operating Base Airborne in Wardak Province, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related incident. Hardt was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Fighting Claims Marine in Farah Province

Lance Cpl. Daniel J. Geary, 22, of Rome, New York, died March 20 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies following Non-Combat Related Incident on Base

Sgt. Jose R. Escobedo, Jr., 32, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died March 20 in Baghdad, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident the night before at Forward Operating Base Kalsu in Iskandariyah, Iraq. Escobedo was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment in Schweinfurt, Germany.

MP Killed by IED in Baghdad

Spc. Gary L. Moore, 25, of Del City, Oklahoma, died March 16 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an explosive device struck his vehicle. Moore was assigned to the 978th Military Police Company, 93rd Military Police Battalion, Fort Bliss, Texas.

 U.S. ARMY

Three Soldiers from Illinois Killed in Kot

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Woodstock, Illinois, died March 15th as a result of injuries sustained in Kot, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. Killed were:

Sgt. Christopher P. Abeyta, 23, of Midlothian, Illinois.

Spc. Norman L. Cain III, 22, of Oregon, Illinois.

Spc. Robert M. Weinger, 24, of Round Lake Beach, Illinois.

Cain died at the scene of the incident in Kot; Abeyta and Weinger were transported to Jalabad, Afghanistan, where they later died.

Marine's Death Results from Non-Hostile Incident

Staff Sgt. Archie A. Taylor, 37, of Tomball, Texas, died March 14 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Kabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Intelligence Battalion, II MEF Headquarters Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 U.S. AIR FORCE

Airman Killed by IED in Kot

Staff Sgt. Timothy L. Bowles, 24, of Tucson, Arizona, died March 15 near Kot, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Bowles was assigned to the 3rd Logistics Readiness Squadron, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Patrick A. Malone, 21, of Ocala, Florida, died March 10 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Anbar Province, Iraq. Malone was assigned to 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Causes Soldier's Death in Kandau Kalay

Pfc. Patrick A. Devoe, II, 27, of Auburn, New York, died March 8 in Kandau Kalay, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Devoe was assigned to the40th Cavalry Regiment4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

IED Claims Soldier in Tikrit

1st Lt. Daniel B. Hyde, 24, of Modesto, California, died March 7 in Samarra, Iraq, of wounds sustained in Tikrit when an explosive device struck his unit vehicle. Hyde was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Mosul

Pfc. Jessica Y. Sarandrea, 22, of Miami, Florida, died March 3 in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked her forward operating base with mortar fire. Sarandrea was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

MP Dies of Wounds Incurred in Taji

Sgt. Jeffrey A. Reed, 23, of Chesterfield, Virginia, died March 2 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by a grenade in Taji, Iraq. Reed was assigned to the 411th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Claims Soldier in Kabul

Sgt. Simone A. Robinson, 21, of Dixmoor, Illinois, died March 1 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near her security post on January 17 in Kabul, Afghanistan.
