We mourn the loss of service personnel killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our prayers are with their families and loved ones.

The following is a list of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in February 2009, as reported by the Department of Defense.

Marine Killed in Vehicle Accident

Cpl. Donte J. Whitworth, 21, of Noblesville, Indiana, died February 28 as a result of a non-hostile vehicle accident in Anbar Province, Iraq. Whitworth was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona.

IED Claims Soldier in Adhamiya

Cpl. Brian M. Connelly, 26, of Union Beach, New Jersey, died February 26 in Adhamiya, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an explosive device. Connelly was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, Task Force 1-6, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Four Soldiers Killed by IED in Kandahar

Four soldiers died February 24 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.  Killed were:
 
Capt. Brian M. Bunting, 29, of Potomac, Maryland. Bunting was a member of the Individual Ready Reserve, assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Syracuse, New York.
 
Sgt. Schuyler B. Patch, 25, of Owasso Oklahoma.  Patch was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Kewanee, Illinois.
 
Sgt. Scott B. Stream, 39, of Mattoon, Illinois. Stream was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Effingham, Illinois.
 
Sgt. Daniel J. Thompson, 24, of Madison, Wisconsin. Thompson was a member of the Individual Ready Reserve, assigned to the 715th Military Police Company, Melbourne, Florida.

 U.S. ARMY

MP Killed in Mosul

1st Lt. William E. Emmert, 36, of Lincoln, Tennessee, died February 24 in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he was shot while participating in a local Iraqi Police function. Emmert was assigned to the 269th Military Police Company, 117th Military Police Battalion, Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

 U.S. ARMY

Three Soldiers Killed in Balad

Three members of the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska, died February 23 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit using small arms fire.  Killed were:

Cpl.  Micheal B. Alleman, 31, of Logan, Utah 

Cpl. Michael L. Mayne, 21, of Burlington Flats, New York.

Cpl. Zachary R. Nordmeyer, 21, of Indianapolis, Indiana.

PA Guard Member Killed by Enemy Fire

Staff Sgt. Mark C. Baum, 32, of Telford, Pennsylvania, died February 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered earlier that day when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire in Mushada, Iraq. Baum was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina died February 20 in Afghanistan when their military vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device followed by small arms fire attack by enemy forces.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Jeremy E. Bessa, 26, of Woodridge Illinois, died February 20, in Khordi, Afghanistan.

Master Sgt. David L. Hurt, 36, of Tucson, Arizona, died February 20, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from wounds received during the same incident.


 U.S. AIR FORCE

IED Claims Soldier Near Bagram

Staff Sgt. Timothy P. Davis, 28, of Aberdeen, Washington, died February 20 near Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Davis was assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Florida.

HI Guard Member Dies from a Non-Combat Related Incident

PFC Cwislyn K. Walter, 19, of Honolulu died February 19 in Kuwait City, Kuwait, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident.  Walter was assigned to the 29th Special Troops Battalion, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Hawaii National Guard.

Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Paktika Province

Sgt. 1st Class Raymond J. Munden, 35, of Mesquite, Texas, died February 16 at Forward Operating Base Tillman in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using indirect fire. Munden was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

IED Kills Soldier in As Salam

Staff Sgt. Sean D. Diamond, 41, of Dublin, California, died February 15 in As Salam, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Diamond was assigned to the 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Marine Killed by IED in Farah Province

Staff Sgt. Daniel L. Hansen, 24, of Tracy, California, died February 14 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Hansen was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Air Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Iwakuni, Japan.

Soldier Dies in Baghdad

Cpl. Stephen S. Thompson, 23, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, died February 14 in Baghdad of injuries sustained from a gunshot wound.  Thompson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Faramuz

Staff Sgt. Marc J. Small, 29, of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, died February 12 at Faramuz, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and small arms fire. Small was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Spc. Peter J. Courcy, 22, of Frisco, Texas.

Pfc. Jason R. Watson, 19, of Many, Louisiana

Four Soldier Dies from IED Blast in Mosul

Four members of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, died February 9 in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. Killed were:

Lt. Col. Garnet R. Derby, 44, of Missoula, Montana.

Pfc. Albert R. Jex, 23, of Phoenix, Arizona.

Pfc. Jonathan R. Roberge, 22, of Leominster, Massachusetts.

Sgt. Joshua A. Ward, 30, of Scottsville, Kentucky.

IED Claims Two IL Guard Members in Kabul

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment of Marion, Illinois died February 8 in Kabul, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Jason E. Burkholder, 27, of Elida, Ohio.

1st Lt. Jared W. Southworth, 26, of Oakland, Illinois.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. James M. Dorsey, 23, of Beardstown, Illinois, died February 8 in Kamaliyah, Iraq, in a non-combat related incident. Dorsey was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Marine Killed in Farah Province

Lance Cpl. Kevin T. Preach, 21, of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, died February 7 from wounds he received January 24 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Preach was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. Christopher P. Sweet, 28, of Kahului, Hawaii, died February 6 in Kirkush, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Sweet was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 172d Separate Infantry Brigade, Grafenwoehr, Germany.
