2009

We mourn the loss of service personnel killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our prayers are with their families and loved ones.

The following is a list of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in January 2009, as reported by the Department of Defense.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Sustained in Vehicle Accident

Spc. Darrell L. Fernandez, 25, of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, died January 31 in Kirkuk, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle accident. Fernandez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Soldier Dies at Camp

CW4, Milton Eric Suggs, 51, of Lockport, Louisiana, died January 30 at camp Lemonier, Djibouti.  Snuggs was assigned to the 38th Operational Support Airlift Detachment, Hammond, Louisiana.

Two Marines Killed in Combat

Two members of the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina died January 27 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Killed were:

Sgt. Trevor J. Johnson, 23, of Forsyth, Montana.   

Sgt. David W. Wallace III, 25, of Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.

Four Soldiers Killed in Helicopter Crash

Four members of the 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York died from wounds suffered when two OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopters crashed January 26 in Kirkuk, Iraq. Killed were:

Chief Warrant Officer Matthew G. Kelley, 30, of Cameron, Missouri.   

Chief Warrant Officer Joshua M. Tillery, 31, of Beaverton, Oregon.  

Chief Warrant Officer Benjamin H. Todd, 29, of Colville, Washington.

Chief Warrant Officer Philip E. Windorski, Jr., 35, of Bovey, Minnesota.

Marine Killed in Farah Province

Lance Cpl. Julian T. Brennan, 25, of Brooklyn, New York, died January 24 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Brennan was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Killed From Non-Combat Related Incident

Pvt. Grant A. Cotting, 19, of Corona, California, died January 24 in Kut, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Cotting was assigned to the 515th Sapper Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Roberto Andrade Jr., 26, of Chicago, Illinois, died January 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle. Andrade was assigned to 1st Battalion, 66th Armor, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Killed in Helicopter's Hard Landing

Spc. Ezra Dawson, 31, of Las Vegas, Nevada, died January 17 in Konar Province, Afghanistan when the Chinook helicopter he was in made a hard landing under combat conditions. Dawson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

 U.S. AIR FORCE

Airman Dies Following a Non-Hostile Incident

Senior Airman Omar J. McKnight, 22, of Marrero, Louisiana, died January 17 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Balad, Iraq. McKnight was assigned to the 6th Security Forces Squadron, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

IED Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Joshua R. Townsend, 30, of Solvang, California, died January 16 in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan, at U.S. military Fire Base Ripley, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident.  Townsend was discovered in his room January 16, unconscious and without a pulse.  He was moved to the Tarin Kowt Field Surgical Team who attempted to revive him.  After numerous attempts, Townsend was pronounced dead.  The incident is under investigation. He was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha team weapons sergeant assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne)  Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Townsend is survived by his wife, mother; father, and a brother. (Source: USASOC News Service, Jan. 19, 2009)

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Pfc. Ricky L. Turner, 20, of Athens, Alabama, died January 16 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit. Turner was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies in Samarra from Non-Combat Related Incident

Lance Cpl. Daniel R. Bennett, 23, of Clifton, Virginia, died January 11 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Bennett was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Marine Dies from a Non-Combat Related Incident in Al Anbar Province

Sgt. Marquis R. Porter, 28, of Brighton, Massachusetts, died January 11 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Anbar Province, Iraq. Porter was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies in Samarra from Non-Combat Related Incident

Pvt. Sean P. McCune, 20, of Euless, Texas, died January 11 in Samarra, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. McCune was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Staff Sgt. Justin L. Bauer, 24, of Loveland, Colorado, died January 10 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Bauer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

IED Claims Three Soldiers in Jaldak

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Hohenfels, Germany died January 9 in the Zabul Province of Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Jaldak. Killed were:

Spc. Joseph M. Hernandez, 24, of Hammond, Indiana,

Maj. Brian M. Mescall, 33, of Hopkinton, Massachusetts,

Spc. Jason R. Parsons, 24, of Lenoir, North Carolina.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED While on Patrol

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died January 8 in Maywand, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when their dismounted patrol was hit by an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Spc. Keith E. Essary, 20, of Dyersburg, Tennessee. 

Sgt. Joshua L. Rath, 22, of Decatur, Alabama.

Marine Killed in Helmand Province 

Lance Cpl. Jessie A. Cassada, 19, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, died January 6 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Cassada was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Northern Iraq

Staff Sgt. Anthony D. Davis, 29, of Daytona Beach, Florida, died January 6 in Northern Iraq, of wounds suffered when he was shot by enemy forces. Davis was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. Davis was killed during a direct-fire engagement by a heavily armed enemy combatant.  The enemy combatant was subsequently killed when he engaged the assault force.  No other Rangers were reported injured. "Staff Sergeant Davis leaves behind a legacy in the countless Rangers who he has trained, influenced and befriended through numerous years of service and multiple deployments with this Regiment," said Col. Richard D. Clarke, 75th Ranger Regiment commander. "Today our Nation mourns the loss of Staff Sergeant Anthony Davis," said Lt. Col. Brian Mennes, 1st Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment commander. "A man who selflessly chose to serve his country during this tumultuous period in our nation’s history in a manner that is both honorable and respected. Staff Sergeant Davis died defending his nation fighting alongside his buddies, leaving behind hundreds of Rangers who called him their friend." Davis was in his sixth deployment in support of the War on Terror with three previous deployments to Iraq and two to Afghanistan. Davis initially entered the Army on Oct. 10, 2000 was assigned to Company C, 1st Bn., at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, July 3, 2001.  He served as a fire team leader with Co. C and a team leader with Headquarters and Headquarters Company. He earned his Ranger Tab at Fort Benning in 2002. Davis is survived by his mother; his stepfather; his sister; and a niece.  (Source: USASOC Release)

Marine Dies at Base

Lance Cpl. Chadwick A. Gilliam, 29, of Mayking, Kentucky, died January 3 at a U.S. military base in Kuwait. Gilliam was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The official cause of death is pending the results of the autopsy.

Fighting Claims Marine in Helmand Province

Lance Cpl. Alberto Francesconi, 21, of Bronx, New York, died January 1 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Francesconi was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
