IED Blast Claims Three Soldiers in Yarhchal

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina died September 29 in Yakhchal, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during mounted operations. Killed were:

Capt. Richard G. Cliff Jr., 29, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Sgt. 1st Class Jamie S. Nicholas, 32, of Maysel, West Virginia.

Sgt. 1st Class Gary J. Vasquez, 33, of Round Lake, Illinois.

Soldier Falls to Enemy Fire in Adhamiyah

Pfc. Christopher T. Fox, 21, of Memphis, Tennessee, died September 29 in Adhamiyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he encountered small arms fire while on patrol. Fox was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Soldier Fatal Injured in Vehicle Accident

Sgt. William E. Hasenflu, 38, of Bradenton, Florida, died September 28 in the Jaji District, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when his unit was ambushed by enemy forces using small arms fire. Hasenflu was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Soldier Fatal Injured in Vehicle Accident

Pfc. Jamel A. Bryant, 22, of Belleville, Illinois, died September 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident while on patrol in Wahida, Iraq. Bryant was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Soldier Killed by IED in Bahbahani

Staff Sgt. Ronald Phillips, Jr., 33, of Conway, South Carolina, died September 25 in Bahbahani, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Phillips was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Suicide Bomber Kills Soldier in Jisr Naft

Capt. Michael J. Medders, 25, of Ohio, died September 24 in Jisr Naft, Iraq, of wounds suffered when a suicide bomber detonated a vest during operations. Medders was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Falls to Enemy Fire in Salman Park

1st Lt. Thomas J. Brown, 26, of Burke, Virginia, died September 23 in Salman Park, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his patrol came under small arms fire during dismounted operations. Brown was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Matthew J. Taylor, 25, of Charleston, South Carolina, died September 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he received small arms fire during dismounted operations. Taylor was an infantry noncommissioned officer, platoon sergeant assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Taylor enlisted in the Army in April 2002. He completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia. His first assignment was at Fort Drum, New York.  In 2004 Taylor moved to Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he joined a 10th Mountain Division unit that would become part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team. At that time he also took on the added responsibility of squad leader. Taylor deployed to Afghanistan from November 2006 to March 2007. He deployed to Iraq in November 2007. Taylor's awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, 2 Army Commendation Medals, 2 Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal - Combat Service, Iraq Campaign Medal - Combat Service, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the NATO Medal.  Taylor is survived by his wife and three children. Two members of the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died September 20 in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Nathan M. Cox, 32, of Walcott, Iowa

Pvt. Joseph F. Gonzales, 18, of Tucson, Arizona.

OR Guard Member Killed by IED in Kandahar

Capt. Bruno G. Desolenni, 32, of Crescent City, California, died September 20 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Desolenni was assigned to the Joint Forces Headquarters, Element Training Team, Oregon Army National Guard.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Islamabad

Maj. Rodolfo I. Rodriguez, 34, of El Paso, Texas, died September 20 in Islamabad, Pakistan, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Rodriguez was assigned to the 86th Construction & Training Squadron, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Petty Officer Killed in Islamabad Hotel Bombing

Cryptologic Technician Third Class Petty Officer Matthew J. O'Bryant, 22, of Duluth, Georgia, died September 20 in the bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan. O'Bryant was assigned to the Navy Information Operations Command Maryland, Fort Meade, Maryland.

Sgt. Jerome C. Bell Jr., 29, of Auburn, New York, died September 19 while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan. Bell was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Fighting in Parwan Province Claims Two Marines

Staff Sgt. Brandon W. Farley, 30, of Haworth, Oklahoma, died September 18 at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained September 17 when his mounted patrol was attacked by enemy forces using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades in Able Monti, Afghanistan. Farley was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

NY Guard Member Dies of Injuries Sustained in Non-Combat Related Incident

Lt. Col. James L. Wiley, 46, of North Bend, Oregon, died September 18 at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident. Wiley was assigned to the 27th Brigade Combat Team, New York Army National Guard, Syracuse, New York.

 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Seven Guard Members Killed in Helicopter Crash

Seven soldiers died September 18 when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter they were in went down in the vicinity of Tallil, Iraq. Killed were:

Three Oklahoma Guard Members assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, Oklahoma National Guard, Lexington, Oklahoma.  They were:

Sgt. Daniel M. Eshbaugh, 43, of Norman, Oklahoma.

Chief Warrant Officer Brady J. Rudolf, 37, of Oklahoma City.

Cpl. Michael E. Thompson, 23, of Harrah, Oklahoma.

Four Texas Guard Members assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, Texas Army National Guard, Grand Prairie, Texas. They were:

Chief Warrant Officer Corry A. Edwards, 38, of Kennedale, Texas.

Sgt. Anthony L. Mason, 37, of Springtown, Texas.  

1st Sgt. Julio C. Ordonez, 54, of San Antonio.

1st Lt. Robert Vallejo II, 28, of Richland Hills, Texas.

IED Claims Four Service Personnel

Four service personnel died September 17 in Gerdia Seria, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

1st Lt. Mohsin A. Naqvi, 26, of Newburgh, New York, who was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry, Fort Benning, Georgia. 

Two members of the Sgt. 2nd Battalion 122nd Field Artillery, Illinois Army National Guard, Robbins, Illinois.  They were:

Joshua W. Harris, 21, of Romeoville, Illinois.

Staff Sgt. Jason A. Vazquez, 24, of Chicago, Illinois.

Also killed in the attack was:

Capt. Bruce E. Hays, 42, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, who was assigned to the Wyoming Joint Forces Headquarters, Wyoming Army National Guard, Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Soldier Died following Vehicle Accident

Pfc. Leonard J. Gulczynski I, 19, of Carol Stream, Illinois, died September 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was involved in an accident. Gulczynski was assigned to the 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Dies of a Non-Combat Related Illness

Capt. Darrick D. Wright, 37, of Nashville, Tennessee, died September 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, of a non-combat related illness. Wright was assigned to the 926th Engineer Brigade, Montgomery, Alabama.

Chaplain Dies from a Non-Combat Related Illness

Chaplain (Col.) Sidney J. Marceaux, Jr., 69, of Beaumont, Texas, died September 14 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., from a non-combat related illness. Following evacuation from Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, Marceaux was assigned to the Warrior Transition Brigade, Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

IED Claims Corpsman in Afghanya Valley

Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Eichmann A. Strickland, 23, of Arlington, Washington, died September 9 from injuries suffered when the vehicle he was driving hit an improvised explosive device in Afghanya Valley, Afghanistan. Strickland was assigned to Combat Service Support Det. 36, Iwakuni, Japan. He was a member of a US Marine embedded Training Team deployed to Afghan Regional Security Integration Command Central.

Soldier Dies of Injures Caused by Enemy Fire

Pvt. Michael R. Dinterman, 18, of Littlestown, Pennsylvania, died September 6 at Outpost Restrepo, Kunar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he received enemy fire while on dismounted patrol. Dinterman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Small Arms Fire Claims Soldier in Aliabad

Spc. Marques I. Knight, 24, of San Juan Capistrano, California, died September 6 in Aliabad, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he received small arms fire while on dismounted patrol. Knight was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, died September 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Sgt. Kenneth W. Mayne, 29, of Fort Benning, Georgia.

Pfc. Bryan R. Thomas, 22, of Battle Creek, Michigan.

Small Arms Fire Claims Solder in Ana Kalay

Sgt. 1st Class Gregory A. Rodriguez, 35, of Weidman, Michigan, died September 2 of wounds suffered in Ana Kalay, Afghanistan, when his mounted patrol came under small arms fire. Rodriguez was assigned to the K-9 unit of the 527th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th MP Brigade, Ansbach, Germany.

Pfc. Patrick W. May, 22, of Jamestown, New York, died September 2 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related incident. May was assigned to the Division Special Troops Battalion, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.
