Petty Officer 1st Class Joshua Harris, 36, of Lexington, North Carolina, died August 30 from injuries sustained while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan.  Harris was temporarily forward deployed from his assignment at Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Dam Neck, Virginia.

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Spc. Michael L. Gonzalez, 20, of Spotswood, New Jersey, died August 28 in Baghdad, of wounds suffered by an improvised explosive device. Gonzalez was assigned to the 340th Military Police Company, Fort Totten, New York.


Soldier Killed in Mosul

Spc. Jorge L. Feliz Nieve, 26, of Queens Village, New York, died on August 28 of injuries sustained from a vehicle incident in Mosul, Iraq.  Feliz Nieve was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Killed during Enemy Attack

Pvt. Tan Q. Ngo, 20, of Beaverton, Oregon, died August 27 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, when his mounted patrol received small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire. Ngo was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Hohenfels, Germany.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. David K. Cooper, 25, of Williamsburg, Kentucky, died August 27 in Baghdad, of wounds suffered in Qadasiyah, Iraq, when his dismounted patrol came under small arms fire. Cooper was assigned to Forward Support Company, 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Spc. Carlo E. Alfonso, 23, of Spokane, Washington, died on August 26 of injuries sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Sadr City, Iraq.  Alfonso was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Soldier Fatally Wounded in Adhamiyah

Spc. Steven J. Fitzmorris, 26, of Columbia, Missouri, died on August 25 of wounds suffered from enemy fire while on a dismounted patrol in Adhamiyah, Iraq.  Fitzmorris was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Staff Sgt. Brian E. Studer, 28, of Roseau, Minnesota, died August 22 in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when the improvised explosive device he was attempting to deactivate detonated. Studer was assigned to the 720th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 28th Transportation Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, Mannheim, Germany.

Sgt. 1st Class David J. Todd, Jr., 36, of Marrero, Louisiana, died August 20 in Bala Morghab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire. Todd was assigned to the Afghan Regional Security Integration Command-West, Herat, Afghanistan.


Enemy Attack Claims Soldier on Patrol

Staff Sgt. David L. Paquet, 26, of Rising Sun, Maryland, died August 20 at Combat Outpost Vegas, Afghanistan, of undetermined causes while conducting a patrol.  Paquet was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Sgt. 1st Class George Stanciel, 40, of Greenwood, Mississippi, died August 19 at Forward Operating Base Gary Owen, Iraq, of wounds suffered when the base came under mortar attack. Stanciel was assigned to the 370th Engineer Company, 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade, Bamberg, Germany.

Pfc. Jonathan L. Luscher, 20, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, died August 17 at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident. Luscher was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Soldier Dies from Injuries in a Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Travis M. Stottlemyer, 20, of Hatfield, Pennsylvania, died August 17 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Manama, Bahrain. Stottlemyer was assigned to the 3rd Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company, Marine Corps Security Forces, Norfolk, Virginia.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Korengal

Staff Sgt. Kristopher D. Rodgers, 29, of Sturgis, Michigan, died August 16 in Korengal, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Rodgers was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two Soldiers Killed in Enemy Attack

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, died August 15 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device and then received small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire. Killed were:

1st Lt. Donald C. Carwile, 29, of Oxford, Virginia, was an infantry officer who entered the Army in August 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell in December 2007. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal (2 awards); Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Air Assault Badge; Parachutist Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert.  Carwile is survived by his wife, and two daughters, his father, and his mother.

 

Pfc. Paul E. Conlon Jr., 21, of Somerville, Massachusetts, was an infantryman who entered the Army in September 2007 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2008. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Conlon is survived by his mother.

Three Marines Killed in Helmand Province

The DoD reported that three Marines died August 14 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  No further details concerning their deaths were provided.  Killed were:

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California. They were:

Lance Cpl. Juan Lopez-Castaneda, 19, of Mesa, Arizona.

Cpl. Anthony G. Mihalo, 23, of Naperville, Illinois.

Also killed was:

Lance Cpl. Jacob J. Toves, 27, of Grover Beach, California.  Toves was assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Marine Dies in Anbar Province

Pfc. Daniel A. C. McGuire, 19, of Mashpee, Massachusetts, died August 14 while supporting combat operations in Anbar Province, Iraq. McGuire was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Suffered in Non-Combat Related Incident

Pvt. Janelle F. King, 23, of Merced, California, died August 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. King was assigned to the 115th Combat Support Hospital, Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Sgt. Michael H. Ferschke Jr., 22, of Maryville, Tennessee, died August 10 while supporting combat operations in Salah ad Din Province, Iraq. Ferschke was assigned to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Soldier Killed by IED in Tarmiyah

Sgt. Kenneth B. Gibson, 25, of Christiansburg, Virginia, died of wounds suffered August 10 in Tarmiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position during dismounted operations. Gibson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Soldier Dies in Baghdad from Non-Combat Related Incident

Pvt. Timothy J. Hutton, 21, of Dillon, Montana, died August 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Hutton was assigned to the 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade, Bamberg, Germany.

Two IN Guard Members Killed by IED in Baghdad

Two members of the 38th Military Police Company, 38th Infantry Division, Indiana Army National Guard, Danville, Indiana died August 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when debris from an improvised explosive device detonation on an overpass fell onto their vehicle. Killed were:

KS Guard Member Killed in Vehicle Accident

Spc. Ronald A. Schmidt, 18, of Newton, Kansas, died August 3 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident in Ashraf, Iraq, on August 2. Schmidt was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, Kansas Army National Guard, Kingman, Kansas.

Soldier's Death Due to Non-Combat Incident

Spc. Kevin R. Dickson, 21, of Steelville, Missouri, died August 2 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. The USASOC reported that Dickson, a construction equipment repair specialist assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Group Support Battalion, Group Service Support Company, Fort Carson, Colorado, was pronounced dead from wounds August 2 at the Joint Balad Hospital.  Dickson joined the Army January 2006 and shortly after arriving to his unit in January 2007, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He was on his second tour to Iraq in at the time of his death.  His awards include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medial, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. Dickson is survived by his mother and two brothers.


Soldier Dies from Non Combat Related Incident in Bayji

Pfc. Jennifer L. Cole, 34, of American Canyon, California, died August 2 in Bayji, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. She was assigned to the 426th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  She entered the Army in July 2007 and arrived at Fort Campbell in January 2008. Cole’s awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon and Weapons Qualification, M4, Expert. Cole is survived by her husband; mother, and father.

IN Guard Member Killed in Vehicle Accident

Sgt. Brian K. Miller, 37, of Pendleton, Indiana, died August 2 in Abd Allah, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident. Miller was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 293rd Infantry Regiment, 76th Brigade Combat Team, Indiana Army National Guard, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Four Soldiers Killed by IED in Chowkay Valley

Four soldiers died August 1 in Chowkay Valley, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.   Killed were three members of the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. They were:

Pfc. David J. Badie, 23, of Rockford, Illinois 

2nd Lt. Michael R. Girdano, 23, of Pennsylvania.

Spc. William J. Mulvihill, 20, of Leavenworth, Kansas.

Also killed in the incident was:

Pvt. Jair De Jesus Garcia, 29, of Chatsworth, California, who was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


IED Claims Soldier on Route Alaska

Sgt. Ryan P. Baumann, 24, of Great Mills, Maryland, died August 1, on Route Alaska, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Baumann was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Baumann joined the Army in May 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in September 2004. His awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal (2 awards); National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Ribbon; Air Assault Badge; Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-Wheeled Vehicles and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Baumann is survived by his mother; and his father.
