Soldier Dies from Injuries in Auto Accident

Spc. Andre D. Mitchell, 25, of Elmont, New York, died July 31 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. Mitchell was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Taji

Sgt. James A. McHale, 31, of Fairfield, Montana, died July 30 at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, of wounds suffered July 22 in Taji, Iraq, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. McHale was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. Seteria L. Brown, 22, of Orlando, Florida, died July 25 in Sharana, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident.  Brown was assigned to the 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood Texas.

Marine Killed in Combat in Helmand Province

Pfc. Ivan I. Wilson, 22, of Clearlake, California, died July 21 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Wilson was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Khost Province

1st Lt. Nick A. Dewhirst, 25, of Onalaska, Wisconsin, died July 20 in the Qalandar District of the Khost Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his convoy came under attack by individuals using rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire. Dewhirst was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Dewhirst joined the Army in May 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2007. His awards and decorations include: Army Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Air Assault Badge; Parachutist Badge; Ranger Tab; Special Operations Diver Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Dewhirst is survived by his parents.

1st Lt. Jason D. Mann, 29, of Woodlynne, New Jersey, died July 17 from a non-hostile incident in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Mann was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Pfc. Willington M. Rhoads, 23, of Las Vegas, Nevada, died July 16 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related incident. Rhoads was assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion (Airborne), Vicenza, Italy.

Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in IED Blast

Staff Sgt. Jeremy D. Vrooman, 28, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died Jul 15 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while his unit was conducting combat operations in Iraq.  Vrooman was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Vilseck, Germany.

Enemy Action Claims Marine in Al Anbar Province

Staff Sgt. Danny P. Dupre, 28, of Lockport, Louisiana, died July 15 from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Dupre was assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies of Injuries Sustained in Vehicle Incident

Staff Sgt. David W. Textor, 27, of Roanoke, Virginia, died July 15 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries suffered from a vehicle incident. Textor was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Lewis, Washington. Textor is survived by his wife and their five children; his father; his mother and stepfather; and his five sisters. Source: DoD and USASOC News Service.

Sailor Succumbs to Injuries After Long Fight

Aviation Boatswain Mate Third Class Petty Officer Daniel R. Verbeke, 25, of Exton, Pennsylvania, died July 14 in Paoli, Pennsylvania of complications from injuries he suffered in a flight deck accident in December 2005 while serving aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, CVN-71.

Soldier Killed by IED while on Patrol

Master Sgt. Mitchell W. Young, 39, of Jonesboro, Georgia, died on July 13 of wounds sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Kajaki Sofla, Afghanistan while conducting a reconnaissance patrol. Young was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha team sergeant assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  He was not involved in the battle that saw nine U.S. service members killed in Kunar Province.  Young is survived by his wife and his mother.  Source: DoD and USASOC News Service.


Enemy Attack Claims Nine Solders

Nine members of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy died of wounds suffered when their outpost was attacked by small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades from enemy forces in Wanat, Afghanistan, on July 13. Killed were:

Pfc. Sergio S. Abad, 21, of Morganfield, Kentucky.

Cpl. Jonathan R. Ayers, 24, of Snellville, Georgia. 

Cpl. Jason M. Bogar, 25, of Seattle, Washington.

1st Lt. Jonathan P. Brostrom, 24, of Hawaii.

Sgt. Israel Garcia, 24, of Long Beach, California.

Cpl. Jason D. Hovater, 24, of Clinton, Tennessee.

Cpl. Matthew B. Phillips, 27, of Jasper, Georgia.

Cpl. Pruitt A. Rainey, 22, of Haw River, North Carolina.

Cpl. Gunnar W. Zwilling, 20, of Florissant, Missouri.

Marine Killed in a Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Jeffery S. Stevenson, 20, of Newton, New Jersey, died July 13 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Stevenson was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Army Announces Change in Status of Missing Soldiers

The Department of Defense announced the deaths of two soldiers previously listed as "Missing-Captured" while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. On July 10, the Armed Forces Medical Examiner positively identified human remains recovered in Iraq July 9 to be those of two soldiers who had been previously listed as "Missing-Captured." 

They were:

Pfc. Byron J. Fouty, 19 at the time of his capture, of Waterford, Michigan.

Sgt. Alex R. Jimenez, 25 at the time of his capture, of Lawrence, Massachusetts. 

Jimenez and Fouty were part of a patrol that was ambushed by enemy forces south of Baghdad on May 12, 2007. They were assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York. Previously announced by the Department of Defense was Pfc. Joseph J. Anzack, Jr., 20, of Torrance, California, who was also killed in the attack.

Two Guam Guard Members Killed by IED

Two National Guard members assigned to 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry Regiment, Guam Army National Guard, Barrigada, Guam, died July 10 in Babo Kheyl, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Spc. Brian S. Leon Guerrero, 34, of Hagatna, Guam.

Spc. Samson A. Mora, 28, of Dededo, Guam.

Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in Samarra

Sgt. 1st Class Steven J. Chevalier, 35, of Flint, Michigan, died July 9 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered in Samarra, Iraq, when his patrol vehicle was struck by a grenade. Chevalier was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Chevalier joined the Army in April 1994 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2007. His awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal (6 awards); Army Achievement Medal (6 awards), Valorous Unit Award; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Army Good Conduct Medal (4 awards); National Defense Service Medal (2 awards); Korean Defense Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (3 awards); Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Ribbon (3 awards); Combat Infantry Badge; Expert Infantry Badge; Parachutist Badge; Driver and Mechanic Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Chevalier is survived by his wife, and two daughters; and by his mother.

Soldier Dies of IED Blast While on Patrol

Sgt. Douglas J. Bull, 29, of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, died July 8 at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered in Chow Kay Valley, Afghanistan, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during a mounted patrol.  Bull was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. William L. McMillan III, 22, of Lexington, Kentucky, died July 8 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device. McMillan was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Sgt. 1st Class Anthony L. Woodham, 37, of Rogers, Arkansas, died on July 5 of injuries suffered in a non-combat incident at Camp Adder, Tallil, Iraq. Woodham was assigned to the 39th Brigade Support Battalion, 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Arkansas Army National Guard, Heber Springs, Arkansas.

1st Lt. Daniel Farkas, 42, of Brooklyn, New York, died on July 4 of injuries suffered from a non-hostile incident in Kabul, Afghanistan (Camp Phoenix). Farkas was assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Syracuse, New York.

Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in IED Blast

Spc. Estell L. Turner, 43, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died July 2 at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, of wounds suffered on June 28 in Malikheyl, Afghanistan, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Turner was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Turner entered the Army in May 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2007. His awards and decorations include: Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Army Overseas Ribbon; Weapons Qualification, M4, expert; Marksmanship Qualification Badge; Marksman with Recoilless Rifle. Turner is survived by his wife, their daughter; and his mother.

Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in IED Blast

Staff Sgt. Faoa L. Apineru, 31, of Yorba Linda, California, died July 2, 2007, from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Apineru was assigned to Headquarters Company, 23rd Marines, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. Staff Sgt. Apineru was wounded on May 15, 2005. After his death on July 2, 2007, the initial medical examiner concluded that Apineru did not die from injuries sustained during his deployment, but a subsequent opinion by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology indicated that his death was a result of his injuries sustained in Iraq.
