The following is a list of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in June 2008, as reported by the Department of Defense.

Three Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Roll-over

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died June 29 in Khosrow-E Sofla, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when their vehicle rolled into a canal, according to a DoD release. The USASOC reported the soldiers died on June 28 from drowning after their vehicle, an RG-31 Mine Portected Vehicle, rolled into a river bed while conducting a patrol. Killed were:

Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey M. Rada Morales, 32, of Naranjito, Puerto Rico was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha senior medical sergeant. Rada Morales is survived by his wife, stepson, daughter, and mother.

Master Sgt. Shawn E. Simmons, 39, of Ashland, Massachusetts was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha team sergeant. Simmons is survived by his wife, daughter, son, and mother.

Sgt. James M. Treber, 24, of Imperial Beach, California was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha weapons sergeant.  Treber is survived by his wife, father, mother, and brother.

IED Claims Soldier While on Patrol

Staff Sgt. Travis K. Hunsberger, 24, of Goshen, Indiana, died on June 27 of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device while on combat patrol near Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.  tHE USASOC reports that he was conducting a reconnaissance patrol in Lamay and was fatally wounded when he struck a pressure-plated improvised explosive device during a dismounted deliberate route clearance as part of the patrol. Hunsberger was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha senior communications sergeant assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Hunsberger is survived by his wife, parents, brother and sister.

Marine Falls in Combat

Staff Sgt. Edgar A. Heredia, 28, of Houston, Texas, died June 26 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Heredia was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command.

 U.S. MARINES

Three Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Three members of the 2nd Battalion, 3d Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, died June 26 while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province. Killed were:

Capt. Philip J. Dykeman, 38, of Brockport, New York.

Lt. Col. Max A. Galeai, 42, of Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Cpl. Marcus W. Preudhomme, 23, of North Miami Beach, Florida.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Three Guard Members Killed by IED Near Base

Three members of the Army National Guard died from wounds suffered June 26 near Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, when their convoy encountered improvised explosive devices, small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Killed were:

Sgt. 1st Class Matthew L. Hilton, 37, of Livonia, Michigan, who was assigned to the 425th Infantry Regiment, Michigan Army National Guard, Selfridge, Michigan.

Also killed in the incident were two members of the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry Regiment (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition), New York Army National Guard, Jamestown, New York.  They were:

Sgt. 1st Class Joseph A. McKay, 51, of Brooklyn, New York.

Spc. Mark C. Palmateer, 38, of Poughkeepsie, New York.

Marine Killed in Combat

Staff Sgt. Christopher D. Strickland, 25, of Labelle, Florida died June 25, while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Strickland was assigned to 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

IED Claims Three Soldiers in Mosul

Three members of the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas died June 25 in Mosul, Iraq, from wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device on June 24. Killed were:

Sgt. Alejandro A. Dominguez, 24, of San Diego, California.

Spc. Joel A. Taylor, 20, of Pinetown, North Carolina.

Pfc. James M. Yohn, 25, of Highspire, Pennsylvania.


IED Fatally Wounds Soldier in Baghdad 

Spc. Joshua L. Plocica, 20, of Clarksville, Tennessee, died June 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Plocica was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Killed When Vehicle Struck Landmine

Spc. Ryan J. Connolly, 24, of Vacaville, California, died June 24 in Khogyani, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle struck a suspected landmine. Connolly was assigned to the 173rd Special Troops Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, Germany.

Two Officers Killed by Bomb Blast

Two soldiers died June 24 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from a bomb blast. Killed were:

Chief Warrant Officer Robert C. Hammett, 39, of Tucson, Arizona, who was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Maj. Dwayne M. Kelley, 48, of Willingboro, New Jersey, who was assigned to the 432nd Civil Affairs Battalion, Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Two Soldiers Killed in Baghdad

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany died June 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered in Salman Pak, Iraq, when their patrol encountered small arms fire during combat operations. Killed were:

Cpt. Gregory T. Dalessio, 30, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

 Pfc. Bryan M. Thomas, 22, of Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Enemy Action Claims Four Service Personnel

Four soldiers died June 21 in Kandahar City, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Killed were:

Lt. Col. James J. Walton, 41, of Rockville, Md., who was assigned to a Military Transition Team, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Also killed were three members of the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition), New York Army National Guard, Geneva, New York.  They were:

Spc. Anthony L. Mangano, 36, of Greenlawn, New York.

Sgt. Nelson D. Rodriguez Ramirez, 22, of Revere, Massachusetts.

Sgt. Andrew Seabrooks, 36, of Queens, New York.

Fighting Claims Marines in Helmand Province

Sgt. Matthew E. Mendoza, 24, of San Antonio, Texas, died June 20 while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Mendoza was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Hospitalman Killed in Farah Province

Hospitalman Dustin Kelby Burnett, 19, of Fort Mohave, Arizona, died June 20 while conducting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Burnett was assigned to First Marine Division Detachment, Twentynine Palms, California.

IED Claims Soldier in Baqubah

Staff Sgt. Du Hai Tran, 30, of Reseda, California, died June 20 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on patrol during combat operations.  Du Hai Tran was assigned to the Fires Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

Petty Officer First Class Ross L. Toles III, 37, of Davison, Michigan.

Solider Killed by IED in Balad

Spc. Jason N. Cox, 21, of Elyria, Ohio, died June 16 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered near Hillah, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Cox was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Sgt. John D. Aragon, 22, of Antioch, California, died June 12 in Kadamiyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Aragon was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Lance Cpl. Kelly E. C. Watters, 19, of Virginia Beach, Virginia died June 11, from wounds suffered while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Watters was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


Marine Dies from Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Javier Perales Jr., 19, of San Elizario, Texas, died June 11, from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Perales was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Solder Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Sgt. 1st Class Gerard M. Reed, 40, of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, died June 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident.  Reed was assigned to the 86th Combat Support Hospital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

 


Soldier Dies from Injuries Sustained in a Non-Combat Related Incident

Pvt. Eugene D. M. Kanakaole, 19, of Maui, Hawaii, died June 11 in Balad Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident. Kanakaole was assigned to the 87th Engineer Company, 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Sgt. Steve A. McCoy, 23, of Moultrie, Georgia, died June 10 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of wounds suffered on March 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. McCoy was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Soldier Dies in Sinjar from Combat Wounds

Pfc. Thomas F. Duncan, III, 21, of Rowlett, Texas, died June 9 in Sinjar, Iraq, of wounds suffered during combat operations. Duncan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. USASOC reported that Duncan died as a result of gunshot wounds received during combat operations and initial indications were that Duncan's wounds may have resulted from friendly fire.  Duncan volunteered for military service and entered the Army in February 2006.  After completing his training, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion where he served as an assistance machine gunner, M240B machine gunner and as a grenadier.

Staff Sgt. Tyler E. Pickett, 28, of Saratoga, Wyoming, died June 8 in Kirkuk Province, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using improvised explosive devices. Pickett was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Sgt. 1st Class David R. Hurst, 31, of Fort Sill, Oklahoma, died June 7 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Hurst was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Two Soldiers Killed in Helicopter Crash

Two members of the 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, died June 5 at Kandahar Army Airfield, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when the Kiowa helicopter they were in went down during a test flight.   Killed were:

Chief Warrant Officer James Carter, 42, of Alabama.

Pfc. Andre D. McNair, Jr., 20, of Fort Pierce, Florida.

Enemy Action in Sharqat Claims Three Soldiers

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York, died June 4 in Tikrit, Iraq, of wounds suffered in Sharqat, Iraq, when their unit was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire and hand grenades. Killed were:

Sgt. Shane P. Duffy, 22, of Taunton, Massachusetts. Duffy enlisted in March 2004 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was assigned to Fort Drum in August 2004 and served his entire military career with 1-87 Infantry Regiment.  He deployed to Iraq with 1st BCT from August 2005 to July 2006. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Air Assault Badge. Duffy is survived by his wife, daughter and parents.

Spc. Jonathan D. A. Emard, 20, of Mesquite, Texas.  Emard entered the Army in March 2006 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Geogia.  He was assigned to Fort Drum in July 2006. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Emard is survived by his parents.

Sgt. Cody R. Legg, 23, of Escondido, California. Legg joined the Army in July 2003 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia. His first assignment was with 2nd Infantry Division based at Camp Casey, Korea. In December 2004, Legg was reassigned to Fort Drum. He previously deployed with 1st BCT to Iraq from August 2005 to August 2006. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Legg is survived by his father; mother and stepfather; and brother.

IED Claims Two Soldiers in Zormat

Two soldiers died June 3 in Zormat, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Maj. Scott A. Hagerty, 41, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, who was assigned to the 451st Civil Affairs Battalion, Pasadena, Texas.

Pfc. Derek D. Holland, 20, of Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, who was assigned to the 228th Brigade Support Battalion, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injury

Pfc. Joshua E. Waltenbaugh, 19, of Ford City, Pennsylvania, died June 3 in Taji, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related injury. Waltenbaugh was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Incident in Tikrit

Spc. Quincy J. Green, 26, of El Paso, Texas, died June 2 in Tikrit, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident. Green was assigned to the 601st Aviation Support Battalion, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Spc. Justin R. Mixon, 22, of Bogalusa, Louisiana, died June 1 in Baghdad Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Mixon was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

Reservist Dies at Base in Ramadi

Spc. Christopher D. McCarthy, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died 1 June 2008 at Forward Operating Base Ramadi, Iraq.  McCarthy was assigned to the U.S. Joint Forces Command, Joint Reserve Unit, Norfolk, Virginia.
