Two Soldiers Dies from Injuries Caused by IED

Two members of the 173rd Special Troops Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, Germany died May 31 in Jalalabad City, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Spc. James M. Finley, 21, of Lebanon, Missouri.

Pvt. Andrew J. Shields, 19, of Battleground, Washington.

Marine Dies in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. Christian S. Cotner, 20, of Waterbury, Connecticut, died May 30 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Cotner was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier

Stg. 1st Class David Nunez, 27, a native of Mexico, was killed May 29 as a result of enemy rocket propelled grenade fire, while conducting a combat patrol in south-west Farah Province, Afghanistan.  The USASOC reported that Nunez was fatally wounded when his Ground Mobility Vehicle was struck by enemy fire in the course of conducting a mounted combat reconnaissance patrol.  Nunez volunteered for military service and entered the Army in February 1999 as an Airborne Infantryman.  At the time of his death, he was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha team engineer sergeant assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.  Nunez is survived by his sons, father and mother.

Soldier Dies from IED Blast

Pfc. Chad M. Trimble, 29, of West Covina, California, died May 28, near Gardez, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Trimble was an infantryman assigned to C Troop, 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He entered the Army in October 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in March 2007. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Spc. Christopher Gathercole, 21, of Santa Rosa, California, died May 26 in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from small arms fire during combat operations. Gathercole was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. Justin L. Buxbaum, 23, of South Portland, Maine, died May 26 in Kushamond, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Buxbaum was assigned to the 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood Texas.

NY Guard Member Fatally Wounded in Enemy Attack

Spc. David L. Leimbach, 38, of Taylors, South Carolina, died May 25 near Bala Baluk, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Leimbach was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 118th Infantry, South Carolina Army National Guard, Fountain Inn, S.C., and attached to the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition), New York Army National Guard.

IED Claims Soldier in Al Jazeera Desert

Sgt. Blake W. Evans, 24, of Rockford, Illinois, died May 25 in Al Jazeera Desert, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Evans was an infantryman assigned to Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Evans entered the Army in October 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell in January 2004.  His awards and decorations include: Army Achievement Medal (3); Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantry Badge; Expert Infantry Badge; Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. IED Blast Claims Soldier in Najaf

Sgt. Frank J. Gasper, 25, of Merced, California, died May 25 in Najaf, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Gasper was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Sgt. 1st Class Jason F. Dene, 37, of Castleton, Vermont, died May 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident on May 24. Dene was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Soldier Dies from Wounds Received in IED Attack

Pfc. Kyle P. Norris, 22, of Zanesville, Ohio, died May 23 in Balad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during a patrol May 22 in Jurf as Sakhr, Iraq. Norris was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Lt. Col. Joseph A. Moore, 54, of Columbus, Mississippi, died of natural causes May 20 in Djibouti. Moore was assigned to the 124th Wing, Idaho Air National Guard, Gowen Field, Idaho.

PA Guard Member Killed by IED

1st Lt. Jeffrey F. Deprimo, 35, of Pittston, Pennsylvania, died May 20 in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Deprimo was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Sailor Killed by IED in Aband District

Lt. Jeffrey A. Ammon, 37, of Orem, Utah, died May 20, as a result of injuries suffered from an improvised explosive device in the Aband District, Afghanistan. The sailor was attached to Commander Navy Region Northwest, Bangor, Wash., and serving in Afghanistan as a member of Provincial Reconstruction Team Ghazni.

Cpl. William J. L. Cooper, 22, of Eupora, Mississippi, died May 19 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Cooper was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Master Sgt. Davy N. Weaver, 39, of Barnesville, Georgia, died May 18 in Qalat, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Weaver was assigned to the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard, Macon, Georgia.

Soldier Killed in Chicago While on Leave

Pfc. Howard A. Jones, Jr., 35, of Chicago, Illinois died May 18 in Chicago from injuries sustained when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while on leave from the Iraq theater of operations.  Jones was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Soldier Dies from IED Blast in Tikrit

Pvt. Branden P. Haunert, 21, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died May 18 in Tikrit, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Haunert was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He entered the Army in September 2007 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2008. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Haunert is survived by his parents. Sgt. John K. Daggett, 21, of Phoenix, Arizona, died May 15 in Halifax, Canada, of wounds suffered May 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle. Daggett was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Pvt. Matthew W. Brown, 20, of Zelienople, Pennsylvania, died May 11 in Asadabad, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Brown was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment, 18th Fires Brigade (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Cpl. Jessica A. Ellis, 24, of Bend, Oregon, died May 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when her vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Ellis was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  She entered the Army in September 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2005. Her awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Meritorious Unit Citation; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Medical Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Ellis is survived by her parents.

Soldier Dies of Injuries from Enemy Attack

Sgt. Isaac Palomarez, 26, of Loveland, Colorado, died May 9 in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his patrol encountered an improvised explosive device and came under small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire.  Palomarez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He entered the Army in March 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in July 2004. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; Air Assault Badge and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Palomarez is survived by his parents.


Rocket-Propelled Grenade Attack Claims Soldier

Pfc. Ara T. Deysie, 18, of Parker, Arizona, died May 9 in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit came under rocket-propelled grenade fire.  He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  He entered the Army in February 2007 and arrived at Fort Campbell in December 2007. Deysie is survived by his mother.

Spc. Mary J. Jaenichen, 20, of Temecula, California, died May 9 in Iskandariyah, Iraq, of a non-combat related injury.  Jaenichen was assigned to the Brigade Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED

Two members of the 101st Airborne Division died May 7 in the Sabari District, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Spc. Jeremy R. Gullett, 22, of Greenup, Kentucky, who was a field artilleryman assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Gullett entered the Army in June 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in September 2007. His awards and decorations include: Army Achievement Medal: Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korea Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Driver and Mechanic badge with Driver (wheeled and tracked vehicles); and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Gullett is survived by his wife and daughter; and his parents.

Staff Sgt. Kevin C. Roberts, 25, of Farmington, New Mexico, who was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Roberts entered the Army in November 2001 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2002. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Combat Infantry Badge; Air Assault Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Roberts is survived by his wife, son, and daughter; and his parents.

Pfc. Aaron J. Ward, 19, of San Jacinto, California, died May 6 in Al Anbar, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came under small arms fire while conducting cordon and search operations. Ward was assigned to the 170th Military Police Company, 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Mosul

Spc. Alex D. Gonzalez, 21, of Mission, Texas, died May 6 in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered small arms fire and a rocket-propelled grenade attack. Gonzalez was assigned to the 43rd Combat Engineer Company, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Spc. Jeffrey F. Nichols, 21, of Granite Shoals, Texas, died May 1 in Baghdad from wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Nichols was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Polk, Louisiana.
