Two Soldiers Killed in Baghdad by IED

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, died April 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Cpt. Andrew. R. Pearson, 32, of Billings, Montana.

Spc. Ronald J. Tucker, 21, of Fountain, Colorado.


Soldier Falls to Enemy Action in Mosul 

Staff Sgt. Chad A. Caldwell, 24, of Spokane, Washington, died April 30 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries sustained while conducting dismounted combat operations. Caldwell was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.


IED Claims Soldier in Baghdad 

Sgt. 1st Class Lawrence D. Ezell, 30, of Portland, Texas, died April 30 in Baghdad of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations. He was assigned to the 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier

Sgt. 1st Class David L. McDowell, 30, of Ramona, California, died April 29 in Bastion, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked using small arms fire. McDowell was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. McDowell volunteered for military service and entered the Army in July 1996.  After completing multiple training courses at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment in December 1996.  He served there as an automatic rifleman, machine gun team leader, fire team leader, rifle squad leader, and weapons squad leader.  In 2005, he moved to Fort Benning and was assigned to the Regimental Training Detachment as a pre-Ranger Course instructor.  After more than a year at Fort Benning, McDowell returned to 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment as a platoon sergeant. McDowell was a veteran of operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.  This was his seventh deployment in support of the war on terror. His numerous awards and decorations include Bronze Star Medal for valor, two Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medal, three Army Good Conduct Medals, to name just a few. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, a second Bronze Star Medal with Valor device and Meritorious Service Medal. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter, his mother, and his father. Airman Killed by IED Near Bagram

Senior Airman Jonathan A. V. Yelner, 24, of Lafayette, California, died April 29 near Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Yelner was assigned to the 28th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad by Enemy Fire

Staff Sgt. Clay A. Craig, 22, of Mesquite, Texas, died April 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when he received small arms fire during combat operations. Craig was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Bryan E. Bolander, 26, of Bakersfield, California, died April 29 in Baghdad from wounds suffered when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.  Bolander was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Rocket Attack Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. David P. McCormick, 26, of Fresno, Texas, died April 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his forward operating base came under rocket attack. McCormick was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. McCormick entered the Army in September 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in January 2005. Three Soldiers Killed by Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Three soldiers died April 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their forward operating base with indirect fire. Killed were:

Sgt. Marcus C. Mathes, 26, of Zephyrhills, Florida. Mathes was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Mathes joined the Army in March 2005. He completed training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and at Fort Bliss, Texas, before being assigned to Fort Polk in July 2005. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.  Mathes was one his second tour of combat duty in Iraq.  (Source: 10th Mtn. Sgt. Mark A. Stone, 22, of Buchanan Dam, Texas. Stone was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Stone joined the Army in September 2004. He completed training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Bliss, Texas before being assigned to Fort Polk in October 2007.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Staff Sgt. Shaun J. Whitehead, 24, of Commerce, Georgia, died April 24 in Iskandariyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he encountered an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. Whitehead was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Blystone, 34, of Springfield, Missouri, died April 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when he encountered small arms fire during a dismounted patrol. Blystone was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Two Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Incident

Two members of the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky died April 23 in Golden Hills, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a vehicle incident. The Fort Campbell Courier reported that the vehicle rolled into a canal.  Killed were:

Pfc. John T. Bishop, 22, of Gaylord, Michigan. Bishop, an infantryman, entered the Army in August 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in January 2007. His awards and decorations include: Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Combat Infantry Badge; Expert Infantry Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. 1st Lt. Timothy W. Cunningham, 26, of College Station, Texas. Cunningham was an infantry officer who entered the Army in May 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2007. Pvt. Ronald R. Harrison, 25, of Morris Plains, New Jersey, died April 22 at Forward Operating Base Falcon near Baghdad, Iraq, of a non-combat related injury. Harrison was assigned to the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Airman Found Dead in Dubai

Airman Apprentice Adrian M. Campos, 22, of El Paso, Texas, was found dead in Dubai on April 21 due to a non-combat related incident. Campos was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Support Squadron 22, which was attached to the USNS Arctic.

1st Lt. Matthew R. Vandergrift, 28 of Littleton, Colorado, died April 21 from wounds he suffered while conducting combat operations in Basrah, Iraq.  Vandergrift was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Bayji

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, died April 21 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Killed were:

Spc. Steven J. Christofferson, 20, of Cudahy, Wisconsin. Christofferson entered the Army in June 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in October 2006. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Sama Village

Staff Sgt. Jason L. Brown, 29, of Magnolia, Texas, died April 17 in Sama Village, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked using small arms fire and grenades. The "Ft. Campbell Courier" reported that Brown was killed instantly by a burst of small-arms fire while attempting to enter a building during an operation to capture an al Qaeda leader in the village. Brown was an engineer assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Brown is survived by his daughter, and his mother and father. (Source: Ft. IED Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. Joseph A. Richard III, 27, of Lafayette, Louisiana, died April 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Richard was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Richard joined the Army in January 2003 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He was assigned to the Fort Hood, Texas-based 588th Combat Engineer Battalion in May 2004 and 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment in October 2005. He was reassigned to 4th BCT in March 2007. Richard previously deployed to Iraq from May 2003 to April 2004 and again from December 2005 to November 2006. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. IED Claims Soldier near Tuz

Spc. Arturo Huerta-Cruz, Clearwater, Florida, died April 14 in Tuz, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Huerta-Cruz was a chemical operations specialist assigned to 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.. Two other Soldiers from his unit were also injured in the attack. Huerta-Cruz was assigned to Fort Drum in October 2006; and deployed to Iraq with the 3,500 Soldier strong Warrior Brigade in November 2007.  He served in the Kirkuk area of northern Iraq. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He is survived by his parents, also of Clearwater, Florida. (Source: 10th Mtn. Marine Dies from Wounds Received in 2005

Sgt. Merlin German, 22 of Manhattan, New York, died April 11 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, from wounds he suffered while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, on February 22, 2005.  German was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California, while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. German's parent unit was the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. He was medically retired Sept. 28, 2007, as a result of his injuries.

Hughes, 26, of Jacksonville, Florida, died April 9 in Balad Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident in Abu Gharab, Iraq.  Hughes was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team (Stryker), 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Ft. Hood Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Sgt. Shaun P. Tousha, 30, of Hull, Texas, died April 9 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Spc. Jacob J. Fairbanks, 22, of Saint Paul, Minnesota, died April 9 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Fairbanks was a field artilleryman assigned to B Battery, 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He entered the Army in December 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2005. His awards and decorations include: Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, 9-Millimeter, expert. Sgt. Jesse A. Ault, 28, of Dublin, Virginia, died April 9 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds suffered in Tunnis, Iraq, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Ault was assigned to the 429th Brigade Support Battalion, Virginia Army National Guard, Roanoke, Virginia.

Vaughn, 22, of San Diego, California, died April 7 in Baghdad, Iraq from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked using a rocket propelled grenade, improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Vaughn was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two members of the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany, died April 7 in Sadr City, Iraq, when enemy forces attacked using a rocket propelled grenade. Killed were:

Sgt. Timothy M. Smith, 25, of South Lake Tahoe, California, died April 7 in Baghdad, Iraq of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was on a route clearance patrol when the attack occurred. Smith was a combat engineer noncommissioned officer assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Smith joined the Army in April 2004 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was assigned to Fort Polk and 4th BCT in September 2004. He previously deployed with his unit to Afghanistan from March to November 2006 and deployed to Iraq in November 2007.  Smith's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.  He is survived by his wife and son, both of Fort Polk; his father, of Reno, Nevada; and mother of South Lake Tahoe. Two soldiers died April 6 in Balad, Iraq, when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Killed were:

Spc. Matthew T. Morris, 23, of Cedar Park, Texas, who was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies following Attack on Guard Post 

Pfc. Shane D. Penley, 19, of Sauk Village, Illinois, died April 6 at Patrol Base Copper, Iraq, from wounds suffered while on duty at a guard post.  Penley was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Penley entered the Army in June 2007 and arrived at Fort Campbell in October 2007. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. Enemy Fire Kills NC Guard Member in Baghdad 

Staff Sgt. Emanuel Pickett, 34, of Teachey, North Carolina, died April 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked with indirect fire. Pickett was assigned to the 1132nd Military Police Company, North Carolina Army National Guard, Rocky Mount, North Carolina.


IED Claims NC Guard Member in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Jeremiah E. McNeal, 23, of Norfolk, Virginia, died April 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. McNeal was assigned to the 237th Engineer Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command, Virginia Army National Guard, West Point, Virginia.

IED Kills Airman in Baghdad

Two soldiers died April 6 in Baghdad, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with indirect fire. Killed were:

Col. Stephen K. Scott, 54, of New Market, Alabama. Scott was assigned to the 356th Quartermaster Battalion, Laurel, Mississippi.

Maj. Stuart A. Wolfer, 36, of Coral Springs, Florida. Wolfer was assigned to the 11th Battalion, 104th Division, Boise, Idaho.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Combat

Sgt. Nicholas A. Robertson, 27, of Old Town, Maine, died April 3 at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds suffered April 2 while conducting dismounted combat operations in the Zahn Khan District, Afghanistan. Robertson, a cryptologic linguist, was assigned to Headquarters Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and served as a Special Operations Team-Alpha assistant team sergeant until his death.  Robertson is survived by his parents and two brothers. Staff Sgt. Travis L. Griffin, 28, of Dover, Delaware, died April 3 near Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Griffin was assigned to the 377th Security Forces Squadron, Kirtland AFB, New Mexico.
