Soldier Killed in IED Attack

Cpt. Michael A. Norman, 36, of Killeen, Texas, died January 31 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Norman was assigned to the Military Transition Team, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Scania

1st Lt. David E. Schultz, 25, of Illinois, died January 31 of wounds suffered when the Convoy Support Center at Scania, Iraq, was attacked by indirect enemy fire.  Schultz was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

MO Guard Member Killed in Baghdad

Spc. Matthew F. Straughter, 27, of St. Charles, Missouri, died January 31 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by a rocket propelled grenade. Straughter was assigned to the 1138th Engineer Company, 35th Engineer Brigade, Missouri National Guard, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Five Soldiers Killed in IED Attack in Mosul

Five members of the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado died from wounds suffered when their unit encountered an improvised explosive device during convoy operations January 28 in Mosul, Iraq. Killed were:

Sgt. James E. Craig, 26, of Hollywood, California.

Staff Sgt. Gary W. Jeffries, 37, of Roscoe, Texas.

Spc. Evan A. Marshall, 21, of Athens, Georgia.

Pfc. Brandon A. Meyer, 20, of Orange, California.

Pvt. Joshua A. R. Young, 21, of Riddle, Oregon.

Soldier Killed in IED Attack

Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Ryan Kahler, 29, of Granite Falls, Minn., died January 26 in FOB Fenty, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from small arms fire in Waygul, Afghanistan.  Possible friendly fire.  Afghan guard (ally) possibly mistook the soldier as an enemy combatant and engaged with small arms fire.  Incident is under investigation. Kahler was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

Detonated IED Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Robert J. Wilson, 28, of Boynton Beach, Florida, died January 26 of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting a dismounted patrol in Baghdad, Iraq. Wilson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier during Combat

Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, 24, of Iowa City, Iowa, died January 25 in Barikowt, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered small arms fire while conducting combat operations.  At the time of the attack, Miller was was protecting his Operational Detachment Alpha teammates during combat operations near the village of Barikowt, Nari District, Konar Province, Afghanistan. Miller was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Miller is survived by his parents, his three brothers, and his four sisters, all from Oviedo, Florida.

Soldier Dies from Wounds Received from IED

Pfc. Duncan Charles Crookston, 19, of Denver, Colorado, died January 25 in Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq. Crookston was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries 

Sgt. Tracy Renee Birkman, 41, of New Castle, Virginia, died January 25 in Owesat, Iraq, from non-combat related injuries. Brikman was assigned to the 626th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. James M. Gluff, 20, of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, died January 19 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Gluff was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Claims Soldier in Taji

Spc. Jon M. Schoolcraft, III, 26, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, died January 19 in Taji, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.  Schoolcraft was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Al Jabour

Spc. Richard B. Burress, 25, of Naples, Florida, died January 19 in Al Jabour, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Burress was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


IED Kills Soldier in Mosul

Staff Sgt. Justin R. Whiting, 27, of Hancock, New York, died January 19 in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.  Whiting was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Three Soldiers Killed in Balad

Three members of the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky died January 16 of wounds suffered in Balad, Iraq, when they were attacked by grenade and small arms fire during combat operations. Killed were: 

Pfc. Danny L. Kimme, 27, of Fisher, Illinois, died in Balad, Iraq.  Kimme entered the Army in October 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in March 2007.  His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, M4. Kimme is survived by his wife, father, and mother.

 

Pfc. David H. Sharrett II, 27, of Oakton, Virginia, who died in Pallouata, Iraq. Sharrett entered the Army in August 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in December 2006. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, M4.  Sharrett is survived by wife, father, and mother.

 

Spc. John P. Sigsbee, 21, of Waterville, New York, who died in Balad, Iraq.  Sigsbee entered the Army in October 2005 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2006.  His awards and decorations include: Purple Heart; National Defense Service Ribbon; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Combat Infantry Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4. Sigsbee is survived by his father and mother.

Pfc. Keith E. Lloyd, 26, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin died January 12 in Tal Afar, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Lloyd was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

PA Guard Member Dies from Injuries Received in January 2nd IED Blast Attack

Lt. Col. Richard J. Berrettini, 52, of Wilcox, Pennsylvania, died January 11 in San Antonio, Texas of wounds suffered on January 2 in Khowst Province, Afghanistan, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Berrettini was assigned to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard Medical Detachment, Erie Clinic, Erie, Pennsylvania.

Marine Dies from a Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Curtis A. Christensen, Jr., 29, of Collingswood, New Jersey, died January 11 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Christensen was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Claims Soldier in Chagali

Sgt. David J. Drakulich, 22, of Reno, Nevada, died January 9 in Chagali, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.  Drakulich was assigned to the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Three Soldiers Killed by IED in Samarra

Three members of the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, died January 9 of wounds sustained during combat operations in Samarra, Iraq. Killed were:

Sgt. David J. Hart, 22, of Lake View Terrace, California, who died in Balad, Iraq. Hart joined the Army in November 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell in March 2004. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantry Badge; Air Assault Badge; and Weapon Qualification, and M4. Hart is survived by his wife, father and mother.

Pfc. Ivan E. Merlo, 19, of San Marcos, California, who died in Samarra, Iraq. Merlo joined the Army in October 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2007. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, and M4. Merlo is survived by his wife and parents.

Pfc. Phillip J. Pannier, 20, of Washburn, Illinois, who died in Samarra, Iraq. Pannier joined the Army in July 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in November 2006. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, and M4.  Pannier is survived by his parents.


Six Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Sinsil

Six members of the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Vilseck, Germany died January 9 in Sinsil, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations. Killed were:

Spc. Todd E. Davis, 22, of Raymore, Missouri.

Staff Sgt. Jonathan K. Dozier, 30, of Rutherford, Tennessee.

Staff Sgt. Sean M. Gaul, 29, of Reno, Nevada.

Sgt. Zachary W. McBride, 20, of Bend, Oregon.

Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Pionk, 30, of Superior, Wisconsin.

Sgt. Christopher A. Sanders, 22, of Roswell, New Mexico.

Two Soldiers Killed When Vehicle Struck an IED

Two soldiers died January 7 of wounds suffered when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Laghar Juy, Afghanistan. Killed were:

Maj. Michael L. Green, 36, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, who died in Laghar Juy, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Headquarters, V Corps, Heidelberg, Germany.

Sgt. James K. Healy, 25, of Hesperia, California, who died at Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 703rd Explosive Ordnance Detachment, Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Salmon Pak

Pfc. Timothy R. Hanson, 23, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, died January 7 in Salmon Pak, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire.  Hanson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.

Lemke, 30, of West Allis, Wisconsin, died Jan. 5 in Ibrahim Al Adham, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.  Lemke was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Sailor Declared Dead After Going Overboard

Petty Officer Second Class Menelek M. Brown, 24, of Roswell, New Mexico, was declared dead January 4 after apparently going overboard from USS Hopper in the Arabian Sea January 3. Navy aircraft and ships conducted an extensive search but did not locate him. USS Hopper is home ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Cpt. Thomas J. Casey, 32, of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Maj. Andrew J. Olmsted, 37, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Hill, 37, of Wellford, South Carolina, died January 2 in Khowst Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Hill was assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, 218th Infantry Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard, Rock Hill, South Carolina.

IED Claims Soldier in Kamasia

Pfc. Joshua R. Anderson, 24, of Jordan, Minnesota, died January 2 in Kamasia, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Anderson was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in a Non-Combat Incident

Staff Sgt. Ryan D. Maseth, 24, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 2 of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Maseth was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
