Cpl. Blair W. Emery, 24, of Lee, Maine, died November 30 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.  Emery was assigned to the 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Marine Killed in Vehicle Accident

Cpl. Allen C. Roberts, 21, of Arcola, Illinois, died November 28 from a vehicle accident near Al Asad, Iraq.  Roberts was assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 214, Marine Aircraft Group 13, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona.

Soldier's Death Under Investigation

Sgt. 1st Class John J. Tobiason, 42, of Bloomington, Minnesota, died November 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered from an incident that is currently under investigation.  Tobiason was assigned to the 847th Adjutant General Battalion, 89th Regional Readiness Command, Wichita, Kansas.

IED Claims Two Soldiers in Amerli

Two members of the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York, died November 27 in Amerli, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

 

Pvt. Isaac T. Cortes, 26, of Bronx, New York, was an infantryman assigned to the 1-71st as a scout.  He enlisted in the Army in January 2007 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.  Cortes is survived by his parents and brother.

Spc. Benjamin J. Garrison, 25, of Houston, Texas, was an infantryman assigned to the 1-71 Cav. as a radio telephone operator.  He enlisted in the Army in March 2006 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and more.  Garrison is survived by his wife and parents.  Source 10th Mtn. Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Staff Sgt. Jonathon L. Martin, 33, of Bellevue, Ohio, died November 22 in Regensburg, Germany, of wounds suffered on November 9 in Jisr Naft, Iraq, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Martin was a cavalry scout assigned to the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  He entered the Army in March 1997 and arrived at Fort Campbell in September 2005.  His awards and decorations include: Purple Heart (2 awards); Army Commendation Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards); Joint Meritorious Unit Awards (2 awards); Navy Unit Commendation; and many more.  Martin is survived by his wife, three children and his parents. Also injured in the incident was Spc. Jermaine D. Franklin  who died November 9, 2007.

Airman Dies of Injuries Sustained in Accident

Staff Sgt. Alejandro Ayala, 26, of Riverside, California, died November 18 of injuries sustained as a result of a vehicle accident in Kuwait. Ayala was assigned to the 90th Logistics Readiness Squadron, F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming.

Three Soldiers Killed by IED Attack in Baquabah

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington, died November 18 when an improvised explosive device detonated during a mounted patrol in Baquabah, Iraq. Killed were:

Pfc. Marius L. Ferrero, 23, of Miami, Florida, who died in Baqubah, Iraq.

Cpl. Jason T. Lee, 26, of Fruitport, Michigan, who died in Balad, Iraq.

Cpl. Christopher J. Nelson, 22, Rochester, Washington, who died in Baqubah, Iraq.

Soldier Dies from Combat-Related Injuries

 

Sgt. Steven C. Ganczewski, 22, of Niagara Falls, New York, died November 16, in Balad, Iraq, wounds suffered from a combat-related incident.  Ganczewski was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Accident

Sgt. Mason L. Lewis, 26, of Gloucester, Virginia, died in Baghdad on November 16, as a result of a non-combat related training accident. Lewis was assigned to the 26th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in Mukhisa

Sgt. Kenneth R. Booker, 25, of Vevay, Indiana, died November 14, in Mukhisa, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Booker was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


IED Kills Soldier in Baghdad

2nd Lt. Peter H. Burks, 26, of Dallas, Texas, died November 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Burks was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

VA Guard Member Dies from Wounds Incurred October 25 in Baghdad

Spc. Derek R. Banks, 24, of Newport News, Virginia, died November 14 in San Antonio of wounds suffered October 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, when the vehicle he was in struck an improvised explosive device.  Banks was a combat engineer assigned to the 237th Engineer Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command, Virginia National Guard, West Point, Virginia.  Banks deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and arrived with the 237th Engineer Company arrived in Iraq September 26, 2007.  He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.  (Source: VA-ARNG website.)

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

2nd Lt. Stuart F. Liles, 26, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, died November 13 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident.  Liles was assigned to the 122nd Aviation Support Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington, died November 13 in Mukhisa, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated during dismounted combat operations.  Killed were:

Sgt. Christopher R. Kruse, 23, of Emporia, Kansas.

Spc. Peter W. Schmidt, 30, of Eureka, California.


MP Killed by Enemy Fire in Mosul

Pfc. Casey P. Mason, 22, of Lake, Michigan, died November 13 in Mosul, Iraq of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire. Mason was assigned to the 728th Military Police Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

IL Guard Member Dies Following Vehicle Accident

Spc. Ashley Sietsema, 20, of Melrose Park, Illinois, died November 12 in Kuwait City, Kuwait, of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident.  Sietsema was assigned to the 708th Medical Company, 108th Medical Battalion, 108th Sustainment Brigade, Illinois National Guard, North Riverside, Illinois.

IED Claims Two Soldiers in Bermel

Two members of the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Schweinfurt, Germany died November 12 in Bermel, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when the vehicle they were in was struck by an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

 

Capt. David A. Boris, 30, of Pennsylvania.

Spc. Adrian E. Hike, 26, of Callender, Iowa.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad

Sgt. Joseph M. Vanek, 22, of Elmhurst, Illinois, died November 12 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire.  Vanek was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Three Soldiers Die from Injuries Received in Aranus on November 9

Three members of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy, died of wounds sustained when their patrol was attacked by direct fire from enemy forces in Aranus, Afghanistan, on November 9. Two other members of the unit (Ferrara and Langevin) died from injuries received November 9, the day of the attack.  Killed were:

   

Pfc. Joseph M. Lancour, 21, of Swartz Creek, Michigan, who died November 10 in Aranus.

Sgt. Jeffery S. Mersman, 23, of Parker, Kansas, who died November 10 in Aranus.

Spc. Lester G. Roque, 23, of Torrance, California, who died November 10 in Aranus.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Bagram

Staff Sgt. Patrick F. Kutschbach, 25, of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, died November 10 in Bagram, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered in Tagab, Afghanistan, when his vehicle was struck by a rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire.  Kutschbach was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, Stuttgart, Germany. He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2007 as a member of the International Security Assistance Force - Afghanistan.  He had deployed to various locations in support of the Global War on Terrorism and this was his first deployment to Afghanistan.  He volunteered for military service and enlisted into the Army in October 2003 as a Special Forces candidate.  In 2004, he earned his "Green Beret." His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and many more.  Kutschbach is survived by his wife, son, father and mother, and two brothers.

Fighting Claims Marine in Aranus

Sgt. Phillip A. Bocks, 28, of Troy, Michigan, died November 9 while conducting combat operations in Aranus, Afghanistan. Bocks was assigned to Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, Bridgeport, California.


 U.S. ARMY

Five Soldiers Killed in Combat in Aranus

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy, died of wounds sustained when their patrol was attacked by direct fire from enemy forces in Aranus, Afghanistan, on November 9. Three other members of the unit were wounded during the attack and died November 10 in Aranus (Lancour, Mersman and Roque).  Killed were:

 

1st Lt. Matthew C. Ferrara, 24, of Torrance, California.

Spc. Sean K. A. Langevin, 23, of Walnut Creek, California.

IED Claims Soldier in Jisr Naft

Spc. Jermaine D. Franklin, 22, of Arlington, Texas, died November 9, in Jisr Naft, Iraq, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device.  Franklin was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Also injured in the incident was Staff Sgt. Jonathon L. Martin who died November 22, 2007.

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Capt. Benjamin D. Tiffner, 31, of West Virginia, died November 7 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he was struck by an improvised explosive device. Tiffner was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  He served as an infantry platoon leader, reconnaissance platoon leader, and company executive officer.  Tiffner volunteered for military service and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 2000.  After Infantry Officer's Basic Course, Airborne School and Ranger School, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, at Fort Lewis, Washington.  He served in Iraq from November 2003 to March 2004.  Upon graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in April 2006, he was assigned to the 5th SFG(A).  Tiffner is survived by his parents. IED Claims Soldier in Arab Jabour

Sgt. Lui Tumanuvao, 29, of Fagaalu, American Samoa, died November 7 in Arab Jabour, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he was struck by an improvised explosive device during combat operations. Tumanuvao was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Spc. Christine M. Ndururi, 21, of Dracut, Massachusetts, died November 6 in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, from a non-combat related illness. Her death is under investigation. Ndururi was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Kills Soldier While on Patrol

Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin R. Bewley, 27, of Hector, Arkansas, died November 5 of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting operations in Salah ad Din Province, Iraq. Bewley was permanently assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11, Oak Harbor, Washington.


Soldier Dies in Taji

Sgt. Daniel J. Shaw, 23, of West Seneca, New York, died November 5 in Taji, Iraq. Shaw was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado. 


Four Soldiers Killed by IED in Tal Al-Dahab

Four soldiers members of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York died November 5, in Tal Al-Dahab, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Humvee during combat operations.   Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Carletta S. Davis, 34, of Anchorage, Alaska. Davis was assigned to the 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Staff Sgt. John D. Linde, 30, of New York, N.Y. Linde was assigned to the 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Pfc. Adam J. Muller, 21, of Underhill, Vermont. Muller was assigned to the 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Sgt. Derek T. Stenroos, 24, of North Pole, Alaska. Stenross was assigned to the 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

2nd Lt. Tracy Lynn Alger, 30, of New Auburn, Wisconsin, died November 1 in Shubayshen, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near her vehicle. Alger was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


 U.S. AIR FORCE

IED Claims Two Airmen and AF Civilian Near Balad Air Base

Two airmen and a Department of the Air Force civilian who were deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom died November 1 near Balad Air Base, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. All were assigned as special agents to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Killed were:

Master Sgt. Thomas A. Crowell, 36, of Neosho, Missouri. Crowell was assigned to Detachment 301, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

Nathan J. Schuldheiss, 27, of Newport R.I. Schuldheiss was assigned to Detachment 204, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. 

Staff Sgt. David A. Wieger, 28, of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Wieger was assigned to Detachment 303, Travis Air Force Base, California.
