A SPECIAL HERO IS REMEMBERED

On Tuesday, October 23, 2007, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England inducted Lt. Michael P. Murphy into the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon. Lt. Murphy is being honored for his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit and inspirational devotion to his men in the face of certain death.  His determination to relay the position of his unit ultimately led to the rescue of one of his team members and the recovery of his own remains as well as the remains of two of his fellow Seals killed in the battle.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in Tikrit

Sgt. Louis A. Griese, 30, of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, died Oct 31 in Tikrit, Iraq, of wounds suffered north of Samarra when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Griese was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

SC Guard Member Killed by Enemy Fire

Staff Sgt. James D. Bullard, 28, of Marion, South Carolina, died October 30 in Spearwan Ghar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using RPG rounds, machine gun fire, mortars and small arms fire during combat operations.  Bullard was assigned to the South Carolina National Guard's 1st Battalion, 263rd Armor Battalion, in Marion, South Carolina.

IED Claims Three Soldiers in Salman Pak

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia, died October 30 of wounds suffered in Salman Pak, Iraq, when enemy forces engaged their unit with small arms fire and an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Pvt. Cody M. Carver, 19, of Haskell, Oklahoma.  Carver died in Salman Pak, Iraq.

Pfc. Rush M. Jenkins, 22, of Clarksville, Tennessee.  Jenkins died in Salman Pak, Iraq

MA Guard Member Killed by IED in Kajaki

Maj. Jeffrey R. Calero, 34, of Queens Village, New York, died October 29 in Kajaki, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on dismounted patrol. Calero was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Massachusetts National Guard, Springfield, Massachusetts.

Master Sgt. Thomas L. Bruner, 50, of Owensboro, Kentucky, died October 28, in Kabul, Afghanistan from a non-combat related illness.  Bruner was assigned to the Headquarters, 2nd Brigade, 100th Division, U.S. Army Reserve, Owensboro, Kentucky.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Incident

Staff Sgt. Joseph F. Curreri, 27, of Los Angeles, California, died October 27 in an accidental drowning incident at Siet Lake on Jolo Island, in the Philippines. Curreri was a Special Forces communications sergeant assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Lewis, Washington. He was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Philippines.  This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.  His military awards and decoration include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge, Special Forces Tab and the Special Operations Divers Badge.  He was posthumously awarded the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.  Curreri is survived by his wife, mother, sister, father, step-mother and step-sister. Soldier Dies Following Fight in Korengal Valley

Sgt. Joshua C. Brennan, 22, of Ontario, Oregon, who died October 26 in Asadabad, Afghanistan of wounds sustained when he came in contact with enemy forces using RPG, machine gun and small arms fire during combat operations on October 25, in Korengal Valley, Afghanistan. Brennan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

IED Claims VA Guard Member in Baghdad

Spc. David E. Lambert, 39, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, died October 26, in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 237th Engineer Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command of the Virginia National Guard. Also injured in the attack were Spc. Derek R. Banks of Newpoart News (died November 14, 2007), Sgt. James A. Corbett of Poquoson, Spc. Joshua G. Primm and Pfc. Eric T. Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Korengal Valley

Spc. Hugo V. Mendoza, 29, of Glendale, Arizona, died October 25 of wounds sustained when he came in contact with enemy forces using RPG, machine gun and small arms fire during combat operations on October 25, in Korengal Valley, Afghanistan. Mendoza was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

Soldier Falls to Enemy Fire in Balad

Pfc. Adam J. Chitjian, 39, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died Oct 25 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries sustained when he came in contact with enemy forces using small arms during combat operations. Chitjian was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood Texas.

Staff Sgt. Robin L. Towns, Sr., 52, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, died October 24 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations. Towns was assigned to the 275th Military Police Company, 372nd Military Police Battalion, Washington, D.C. National Guard.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Kunar Province

Staff Sgt. Larry I. Rougle, 25, of West Jordan, Utah, died October 23 in Sawtalo Sar Mountain, Kunar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds when he was engaged by enemy small arms fire during combat operations. Rougle was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

SC Guard Member Killed in Vehicle Rollover

Sgt. Edward O. Philpot, 38, of Latta, South Carolina, died October 23 in Afghanistan, from a non-combat related Humvee rollover accident. Philpot was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 263rd Armor Regiment, South Carolina National Guard, Dillon, South Carolina.

Two Sailors Die in Bahrain

Two sailors died October 22 in Bahrain during a non-combat related incident. Both sailors held the Master-at-Arms rating and were assigned to U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain. Killed were:

Seaman Genesia Mattril Gresham, 19, of Lithonia, Georgia.

Seaman Anamarie Sannicolas Camacho, 20, of Panama City, Florida.

Cpl. Erik T. Garoutte, 22, of Santee, California, died October 19 in Baghdad, Iraq. Garoutte was assigned to 1st Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team Company, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Norfolk, Virginia.

IEDs Claim Two Soldiers in Baghdad

Two soldiers were killed October 18 in Baghdad as a result of enemy action involving IEDs.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Jarred S. Fontenot, 35, of Port Barre, Louisiana, died October 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered from an improvised explosive device and small arms fire during combat operations.  Fontenot was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Spc. Wayne M. Geiger, 23, of Lone Pine, California died October 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Geiger was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

Soldier Dies from IED Blast Blast in Balad

Spc. Vincent A. Madero, 22, of Port Hueneme, California died October 17 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV. Madero was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Dies of a Non-Combat Related Illness

Spc. Michael D. Brown, 20, of Williamsburg, Kansas died October 16 in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, of a non-combat related illness after being transported from Tikrit, Iraq on October 15. Brown was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Soldier Dies as a Result of a Non-Combat Incident

Spc. Jason B. Koutroubas, 21, of Dunnellon, Florida, died October 14 in Tal Afar, Iraq, from injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Koutroubas was assigned to Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.


Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Al Busayifi

1st Lt. Thomas M. Martin, 27, of Ward, Arkansas, died October 14 in Al Busayifi, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire during combat operations. Martin was assigned to 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Pfc. Kenneth J. Iwasinski, 22, of West Springfield, Massachusetts, died October 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.  Iwasinki was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


IED Kills Soldier on Patrol in Arab Jabour 

Sgt.1st Class Justin S. Monschke, 28, of Krum, Texas, died October 14 in Arab Jabour, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on patrol during combat operations.  Monschke was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, New Carolina. He enlisted in the Army in June 1997 as an Airborne Infantryman and earned his "Green Beret" in 2002.  Monschke received numerous awards and decorations over the course of his military career, including two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, three Army Good Conduct Medals, to name a few. IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Pvt. Nathan Z. Thacker, 18, of Greenbrier, Arkansas, died October 12 in Kirkuk, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Greenbrier was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.  Thacker enlisted int he Army in April 2007 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Ft. Benning, Georgia.  He arrived at Fort Drum in August 2007.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal.  Thacker is survived by his parents and grandfather. Staff Sgt. Donald L. Munn II, 25, of Saint Clairs Shores, Michigan, died October 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit. Munn was assigned to Special Troops Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Eric T. Duckworth, 26, of Plano, Texas, died October 10 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Duckworth was assigned to the 759th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Vehicle Accident 

Sgt. Jason M. Lantieri, 25, of Killingworth, Connecticut, died October 10 in Iskandaryah, Iraq, of injuries suffered during a vehicle accident Oct. 9. Lantieri was assigned to the 725th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


Vehicle Roll-Over Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Frank L. Cady III, 20, of Sacramento, California, died October 10 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle roll-over.  Cady was assigned to the 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


 U.S. ARMY RESERVES

Enemy Action Claims Two Solders in Baghdad

Two Army Reservists died October 10 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with rockets. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Lillian Clamens, 35, of Lawton, Oklahoma. Clamens was assigned to the 1st Postal Platoon, 834th Adjutant General Company, Miami.

Spc. Samuel F. Pearson, 28, of Westerville, Ohio. Pearson was assigned to the 376th Finance Company, 88th Regional Readiness Command, Wausau, Wisconsin.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. Jeremy W. Burris, 22, of Tacoma, Washington, died October 8 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Burris was assigned to 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Northern Iraq

Cpl. Benjamin C. Dillon, 22, of Rootstown, Ohio, died October 7 in northern Iraq of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.  Dillon was a gun team leader assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia. He volunteered for military service and entered the Army in September 2004.  After completing his training, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Ranger Regiment in April 2005.  He was a veteran of operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.  His many awards and decoration include Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, to name a few.  Dillon was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Meritorious Service Medal.  Dillon is survived by his parents, and two brothers.  Source: US Army Release.

Spc. Adam D. Quinn, 22, of Orange City, Florida, died October 6 at Forward Operating Base Phoenix, near Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Quinn was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Cpl. Gilberto A. Meza, 21, of Oxnard, California, died October 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit.  Meza was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

Two members of the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, in Vilseck, Germany died October 5 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their unit during combat operations. Killed were:

Spc. Jason N. Marchand, 26, of Greenwood, W. Virginia.

Sgt. Joseph B. Milledge, 23, of Pointblank, Texas.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Bayji

Spc. Rachael L. Hugo, 24, of Madison, Wisconsin, died October 5 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked her unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Hugo was assigned to the 303rd Military Police Company, 97th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, U.S. Army Reserve, Jackson, Michigan.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Avealalo Milo, 23, of Hayward, California, died October 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire. Milo was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Vilseck, Germany.


Two Soldiers Die in Bayji

Two members of the 82nd Airborne Division died October 4 in Bayji, Iraq, according to DoD press releases.  Killed were:

Spc. Vincent G. Kamka, 23, of Everett, Washington, died October 4 in Bayji, Iraq. Kamka was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Sgt. Ricardo X. Rodriguez, 23, of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, died October 4 near Bayji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations. Rodriguez was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Sailor Dies from Injuries Received in Vehicle Accident

Seaman Apprentice Shayna Ann Schnell, 19, of Tell City, Indiana, died as a result of injuries suffered from a vehicle accident. Schnell was serving as a master-at-arms assigned to Naval Security Force Bahrain, Jebel Ali Detachment, United Arab Emirates.  The DoD Release, dated October 5, 2007, did not state the date of death, nor the location.

Marine Killed in Kunar Province

Petty Officer Third Class Mark R. Cannon, 31, of Lubbock, Texas died October 2 while conducting combat operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.  Cannon was a hospital corpsman assigned to 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Gunnery Sgt. Herman J. Murkerson, Jr., 35, of Adger, Alabama, died October 1 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Murkerson was assigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.
