Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Jason M. Butkus, 34, of West Milford, New Jersey, died August 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit. Butkus was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


IED Claims Soldier in Al Noor 

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel E. Scheibner, 40, of Muskegon, Michigan, died August 30 in Al Noor, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Scheibner was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Striker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Dies in Taji from a Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. Travis M. Virgadamo, 19, of Las Vegas, Nevada, died August 30 in Taji, Iraq, in a non-combat related incident. Virgadamo was assigned to the 3d Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in Ramadi

Sgt. Kevin A. Gilbertson, 24, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died August 31 in Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit during combat operations August 29 in Ramadi, Iraq. Gilbertson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. John C. Tanner, 21, of Columbus, Georgia, died August 29 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Tanner was assigned to3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Enemy Fire Claims Two Soldiers in Muqdadiyah

Two members of the 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit during combat operations in Muqdadiyah, Iraq.  Killed were:

Capt. Erick M. Foster, 29, of Wexford, Pennsylvania, died August 29 in Balad, Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Andrew P. Nelson, 22, of Moorhead, Minnesota, died in Muqdadiyah, Iraq.


Soldier Dies in Taji from a Non-Combat Related Incident

Pvt. Justin T. Sanders, 22, of Watson, Louisiana., died August 29 in Taji, Iraq, in a non-combat related incident. Sanders was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed by IED in Ramadi

Spc. Edward L. Brooks, 25, of Dayton, Ohio, died August 29 in Ramadi, Iraq, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device. Brooks was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Three Soldiers from Ft. Lewis Killed by IED

Three soldiers died August 28 in Jaji, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device.

Two of the soldiers killed were members of the 585th Engineer Pipeline Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington. They were:

Sgt. Cory L. Clark, 25, of Plant City, Florida.

Sgt. 1st Class Rocky H. Herrera, 43, of Salt Lake City.

Also killed was

Sgt. Bryce D. Howard, 24, of Vancouver, Washington. Howard was assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Enemy Action Claims Reservist in Kirkuk

Sgt. James S. Collins, Jr., 35, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, died August 28 in Kirkuk, Iraq, of wounds suffered during combat operations. Collins was assigned to the 303rd Military Police Company (Combat Support), U.S. Army Reserve, Jackson, Michigan.

Insurgent Attack Claims Three Soldiers

Three soldiers died August 27 at Forward Operating Base Naray, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit during combat operations in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.  All three were members of a transition team training and developing the Afghan Army and police.

Killed was

Maj. Henry S. Ofeciar, 37, of Agana, Guam. Ofeciar was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  Ofeciar was a finance officer serving on the transition team.  He entered the Army in February 1994 and deployed to Afghanistan in January 2007.  This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Also killed were:

Two of the soldiers killed were members of the 55th Brigade, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Scranton, Pennsylvania.  They were:

Sgt. Jan M. Argonish, 26, of Peckville, Pennsylvania.  He entered the Army in February 1998 and was an infantryman serving on the transition team at the time of his death.  This was Argonish's second deployment in support of the Global War of Terrorism.

 

Master Sgt. Scott R. Ball, 38, of Mount Holly Springs, Pennsylvania. He entered the Army in July 1987 and was a combat engineer serving on the transition team at the time of his death.  This was Ball's second deployment in support of the Global War of Terrorism.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Paktika

Pfc. Thomas R. Wilson, 21, of Maurertown, Virginia, died August 27 in Paktika, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit during combat operations. Wilson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rdInfantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

KY Guard Member Killed in Lewanne Bazaar

Staff Sgt. Nicholas R. Carnes, 25, of Dayton, Kentucky, died August 26 in Orgun-e, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire in Lewanne Bazaar, Afghanistan. Carnes was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery Regiment, Kentucky Army National Guard, Carrollton, Kentucky.

Lance Cpl. Rogelio A. Ramirez, 21, of Pasadena, California, died August 26 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Ramirez was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Enemy Action Claims Two Soldiers in Samara

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina died August 26 in Samarra, Iraq, of wounds suffered when the enemy attacked their unit during combat operations. Killed were:

Two Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Rollover

Two soldiers died of wounds sustained when their HUMVEE rolled over in Herat, Afghanistan at approximately 8 a.m., according to Iowa National Guard press release The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.  Both soldiers were part of a transition team training Afghan military and police.  Killed were:

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel E. Miller, 43, of Rossford, Ohio. Miller was an infantryman assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He entered the Army in June 1986 and began serving with the 1st Infantry Division in November 2006.  This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.  (Source: Ft. Sgt. 1st Class Scott M. Carney, 37, of Ankeny, Iowa, was a passenger in the HUMVEE when it rolled over.  He was an Infantryman assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa Army National Guard.  Carney enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1989, and had several assignment before leaving active duty in October 1999.  He joined the Iowa Army National Guard in December 2000 and was transferred to the 2nd BCT in November 2004.  He mobilized in February 2007 for Afghanistan.  Prior to his deployment, Carney served full-time as the Readiness NCO for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd BCT in Boone, Iowa. Carney was part of the Embedded Training Team (ETT) assisting the Afghan National Army.  At the time of Carney's death, the ETT was made up of approximately 50 Iowa Army National Guard Soldiers who had reported to Fort Riley, Kansas for additional training and preparation before departing to Afghanistan.  They arrived in Afghanistan in May 2007, where they provided advanced combat training to the Afghan National Army and Afghan Police.  Carney is survived by his wife, twin sons, his mother and father, three brothers and a sister.  (Source: IA-ARNG website).

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Sgt. 1st Class David A. Heringes, 36, of Tampa, Florida, died August 24 near Tikrit, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations in Bayji, Iraq. Heringes was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Two Special Ops Officers Killed in Baghdad

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Lewis, Washington died August 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Sgt. 1st Class Adrian M. Elizalde, 30, of North Bend, Indiana, volunteered for military service and entered the Army in May 1996 as an infantryman after graduating from High School in 1995.  He served four years as an infantryman and scout with 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment (AIR), and another three years as a Long Range Surveillance Detachment team leader with Company D, 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.  He later earned the coveted "Green Beret" after graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2005.  Elizalde was assigned to 2nd Bn., 1st SFG(A) at Fort Lewis, Washington, in March 2006. Elizalde is survived by his daughter, his parents, and also his sister.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael J. Tully, 33, of Falls Creek, Pennsylvania, volunteered for military service and entered the Marine Corps in February 1993 after graduating from High School in 1992.  He later transferred to the Army in 1997 and was assigned as an infantryman in Company E, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.  Tully then served as a LRSD assistant team leader in the same unit one year later before earning the coveted “Green Beret” after graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2006.  Tully was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st SFG(A) at Fort Lewis Washington, in December 2006. Tully is survived by his wife and son, his father and step-mother, his mother, his brother and sister.

14 Soldiers Killed in Helicopter Crash

The Department of Defense announced today the death of 14 soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They died August 22 in Multaka, Iraq, of injuries suffered when their helicopter crashed.

Killed were the following soldiers assigned to the 4th Squadron, 6th U.S. Air Cavalry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington:

Spc. Rickey L. Bell, 21, of Caruthersville, Missouri.

Chief Warrant Officer Paul J. Flynn, 28, of Whitsett, North Carolina.

Sgt. Matthew L. Tallman, 30, of Groveland, California.

Pfc. Omar E. Torres, 20, of Chicago, Illinois died August 22 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations. Torres was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Abu Ghraib

Pfc. Edgar E. Cardenas, 34, of Lilburn, Georgia, died August 22 in Abu Ghraib, Iraq, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device. Cardenas was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Spc. George V. Libby, 23, of Aberdeen, North Carolina, died August 20 near Khowst, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related incident. Libby was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington.  Libby enlisted in the Army in March 2005 and had been assigned to the Ranger Regiment since completing basic training and the Regiment’s Ranger Indoctrination Program training at Fort Benning, Georgia, in September 2005. He is survived by his wife, mother, father, a brother and sister.

Two MPs Die of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Two soldiers dies of non-combat related injuries in separate incidents on August 16.  Both were assigned to the 401st Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.  Killed were:

Spc. Kamisha J. Block, 20, of Vidor, Texas, who died in Baghdad, Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Paul B. Norris, 30, of Cullman, Alabama, who died in Balad, Iraq.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Taramiyah 

Pfc. Willard M. Kerchief III, 21, of Evansville, Indiana, died August 16 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire during combat operations in Taramiyah, Iraq. Kerchief was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Two Soldiers Killed by Enemy Fire in Taji

Two members of the 1st Cavalry Division died August 15 in Taji, Iraq, when the enemy attacked using indirect fire. Killed were:

Sgt. Princess C. Samuels, 22, of Mitchellville, Md. The soldier was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Spc. Zandra T. Walker, 28, of Greenville, South Carolina. Walker was assigned to 4th Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Aviation Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire

Staff Sgt. Robert R. Pirelli, 29, of Franklin, Massachusetts, died August 15 in Iraq of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire during a dismounted attack on an enemy position. Pirelli was a Special Forces engineer sergeant assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Carson, Colorado.  Pirelli volunteered for military service and entered the Army in December 2003 as an infantryman.  After graduating the Special Forces Qualification Course, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th SFG(A) at Fort Carson, Colorado, in June 2006.  He deployed to Iraq in March 2007 as a member of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Arabian Peninsula.  This was his first deployment to Iraq.  He received numerous awards and decorations, including two Army Good Conduct Medals.  Pirelli is survived by his parents, his brother and sister.  Source: Special Forces website.

Soldier Falls to Enemy Action in Baghdad

Pfc. Shawn D. Hensel, 20, of Logansport, Indiana, died August 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds during an enemy attack. Hensel was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.


Five Soldiers Killed in Helicopter Crash

Five members of the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49, Fort Wainwright, Alaska died August 14 in Al Taqqadum, Iraq, of injuries suffered when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed in the vicinity of Al Taqaddum Air Base. Killed were:

Crew members:

Chief Warrant Officer Christopher C. Johnson, 31, of Grandville, Michigan, was a Chinook pilot who joined the Army in August 2004 and was assigned to Ft. Wainwright in January 2006.

Chief Warrant Officer Jackie L. McFarlane, Jr., 30, Virginia Beach, Virginia, was a Chinook pilot who joined the Army in August 1994 and was assigned to Ft. Wainwright in August 2006.

Also killed in the crash were:

Staff Sgt. Sean P. Fisher, 29, of Santee, California was a flight engineer who joined the Army in June 2002 and was assigned to Ft. Wainwright in February 2003.

 

Spc. Steven R. Jewell, 26, of Bridgeton, North Carolina was a CH-47 repairman who joined the Army in August 2005 and was assigned to Ft. Wainwright in April 2006.

 

Staff Sgt. Stanley B. Reynolds, 37, of Rock, West Virginia was an aircraft power plant repairman who joined the Army in March 2002 and was assigned to Ft. Wainwright in December 2002.

Three members of the 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas died August 13 in Qayyarah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Eric D. Cottrell, 39, of Pittsview, Alabama.

Pfc. Juan M. Lopez, Jr., 23, of San Antonio, Texas.

Pfc. Paulomarko U. Pacificador, 24, of Shirley, New York.

Spc. Alun R. Howells, 20, of Parlin, Colorado, died August 13 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy direct fire. Parlin was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Pvt. Alan J. Austin, 21, of Houston, died August 12 near Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related accident. Austin was assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Three soldiers Killed by IED in Nangarhar

Three soldiers died August 12 in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. Killed were:

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  They were:

Staff Sgt. Jesse G. Clowers Jr., 27, of Herndon, Virginia, was a Special Forces Communications Sergeant.  He  enlisted in the Army in June, 1994, and completed the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2006.  He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th SFG(A) in September 2006.  He earned numerous awards and decorations, including Army Achievement Medal and Army Good Conduct Medal. Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey D. Kettle, 31, of Madill, Oklahoma. Kettle was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha senior engineer sergeant assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th SFG (Airborne).  He enlisted in the Army in November, 1993, and earned numerous awards and decorations, including a Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valor Unit Award and Army Superior Unit Award, and the National Good Conduct Medal to name a few.  Kettle is survived by his wife and two sons, and his parents.  (Source: Special Forces website)

Birchett was assigned to the 887th Engineer Company, 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Leonard, Jr., 29, of Monroe, Louisiana, died August 5 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when the vehicle he was in was struck by a rocket propelled grenade.  Leonard was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Christopher T. Neiberger, 22, of Gainesville, Florida, died August 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Neiberger was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.


Four Soldiers Killed by IED in Baqubah

Four members of the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington died August 6 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Three Soldiers Killed in Hawr Rajab by IED

Three members of the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska died on 4 August, in Hawr Rajab, Iraq, when the vehicle they were in struck an improvised explosive device during combat operations. Killed were:
