Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Robb L. Rolfing, 29, of Milton, Massachusetts, died June 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire.  Rofling was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Carson, Colorado.  This was his second deployment.  Rolfing first deployed to Iraq in 2003 with the 187th Infantry Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Rolfing graduated from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York, in 2000.  He enlisted in the Army in January 2003 as an infantryman.  He was selected to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg in 2004, to become a Special Forces engineer.  He earned the "Green Beret" and Special Forces tab in 2005 as was assigned to the 10th SFG(A).  Source: Special Forces web site.

IED Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. William W. Crow, Jr., 28, of Grandview Plaza, Kansas, died June 28 in Baghdad, of wounds sustained when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Crow was an infantryman assigned to the 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He entered the Army in 2001 and began serving with the 1st Inf. Div. in August 2002.  This was his third deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. Derek C. Dixon, 20, of Riverside, Ohio, died June 26 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Dixon was assigned to 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Ad Diwaniyah

Sgt. 1st Class Nathan L. Winder, 32, of Blanding, Utah, died June 26 in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire. Winder was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Lewis, Washington. Winder was born in Seoul, South Korea, and was raised in Utah. He enlisted in the Army in August 1993, as a mechanized infantryman.  After completing basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment at Fort Riley, Kansas. He later served as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle section leader with 1st Bn., 9th Infantry Regiment at Camp Hovey, Korea and as a dismounted squad leader with 1st Bn., 5th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas. In 2003, he was selected to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, to become a Special Forces medic. He earned the coveted Green Beret in 2006 and was assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Lewis, Washington.  Winder is survived by his wife and son, and his parents.

Sgt. Trista L. Moretti, 27, of South Plainfield, New Jersey, died June 25 in Nasir Lafitah, Iraq, when her unit was attacked by insurgents using indirect fire. Moretti was assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Pfc. Andre Craig, Jr., 24, of New Haven, Connecticut, died June 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Craig was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Palmer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Soldier Falls to Enemy Attack in Vashir City

Capt. Darrell C. Lewis, 31, of Washington, D.C., died June 23 in Vashir City, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his unit was attacked by insurgents using rocket propelled grenades, mortars and small arms fire. Lewis was a mobilized Army Reserve air defense artillery officer serving on a transition team assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He entered the Army Reserve in June 2002 and deployed with the 1st Infantry Division. transition team in January 2007. This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Sgt. Joel A. Dahl, 21, of Los Lunas, New Mexico, died June 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire. Dahl was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Airman 1st Class Jason D. Nathan, 22, of Macon, Georgia, died June 23, in Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol. Airman Nathan was assigned to the 48th Security Forces Squadron, RAF Lakenheath, England.

Sgt. Dustin J. Perrott, 23, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, died June 21, in Miri, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Perrott was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Rocket Propelled Grenade Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Karen N. Clifton, 22, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, died June 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when her vehicle was hit with a rocket propelled grenade. Clifton was assigned to the 554th Military Police Company, 95th Military Police Battalion, Kaiserslautern, Germany.


Enemy Attack Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Pfc. Raymond N. Spencer, Jr., 23, of Carmichael, California, died June 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by insurgents using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Spencer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, died June 19 in Muhammad al Ali, Iraq, of wounds suffered when a roadside bomb detonated near their vehicle. Killed were:

IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Pfc. David A. Wilkey, Jr., 22, of Elkhart, Indiana, died June 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit June 17 in Baghdad. Wilkey was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He entered the Army in January 2006 and began serving with the 1st Inf. Div. in May 2006.  This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Arab Jabor

Pfc. Larry Parks, Jr., 24, of Altoona, Pennsylvania, died June 18 in Arab Jabor, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Parks was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia. 


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Balad

Sgt. Eric L. Snell, 35, of Trenton, New Jersey, died June 18 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with insurgents using small arms fire in Baghdad, Iraq. Snell was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Pfc. Jacob T. Tracy, 20, of Palestine, Illinois, died June 18 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle June 17 in Baghdad, Iraq. Tracy was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies After Long Battle to Recover from Wounds Received in Tikrit

Sgt. Frank M. Sandoval, 27, of Yuma, Arizona, died June 18 in Palo Alto, California, of wounds sustained when his unit was attacked by insurgents using small arms fire November 28, 2005, in Tikrit, Iraq. Sandoval was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Three Soldiers Killed in IED Blast

Three soldiers died June 17 in Panjway, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.  Killed were two members of the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division (Transition Team), Fort Riley, Kansas. They were:

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher D. Henderson, 35, of Hillsboro, Oregon.  Henderson was an active duty infantryman serving on a transition team assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He entered the Army in August 1991, and he deployed with the 1st Inf. Div. transition team in January 2007. This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Capt. Joshua E. Steele, 26, of North Henderson, Illinois. Steele was an active duty engineer serving on a transition team assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He entered the Army in December 2002.

 

Also killed in the incident was a LA Guard Member.  He was

Sgt. 1st Class John M. Hennen, 26, of Vinton, Louisiana. Hennen was assigned to the Louisiana National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was an infantryman serving on a transition team assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He entered the Army National Guard in December 2003.

Soldier Dies from Enemy Attack

Staff Sgt. Roy P. Lewsader, Jr., 36, of Belleville, Illinois, died June 16, in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade. Lewsader was an infantryman serving on a transition team assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  He entered active Army in September 1993 and deployed on the 1st Inf. Div. transition team in January 2007.  This was his second deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Soldier Killed by IED in Rashidiyah

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Ft. Lewis, Washington died June 16 in Rashidiyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when the vehicle they were in struck an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Spc. Zachary A. Grass, 34, of Beach City, Ohio.

Sgt. Danny R. Soto, 24, of Houston, Texas.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Kirkuk

Army 1st Lt. Frank B. Walkup IV, 23, of Woodbury, Tennessee, died June 16 in Kirkuk, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position during dismounted operations. Walkup was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Soldier Killed by IED in Balad

Master Sgt. Arthur L. Lilley, 35, of Smithfield, Pennsylvania, died June 15, in Shkin, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire. Lilley was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha team sergeant assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He joined the Army in June 1990, and Volunteered to become a Special Forces Soldier in 1995.  Lilley garnered numerous awards during his military career.  He is survived by his wife, daughter and son, his parents, his brother, two half-brothers, two half-sisters, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Pittman was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He entered the Army in August 2005 and began serving with the 1st Inf. Div. in January 2006.  This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Airman Killed in Plane Crash North of Balad AB

Maj. Kevin H. Sonnenberg, 42, of McClure, Ohio, died June 15 when his jet crashed five miles north of Balad Air Base, Iraq. Sonnenberg was assigned to the 112th Fighter Squadron, Toledo, Ohio.

Staff Sgt. Michael A. Bechert, 24, of New Castle, Indiana, died on 14 June in San Antonio, Texas of wounds suffered when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device on May 30 in Baghdad, Iraq. Bechert was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Al Mugdadiyah

Spc. Josiah W. Hollopeter, 27, of San Diego, California died June 14 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by insurgents using small arms fire in Al Muqdadiyah, Iraq. Hollopeter was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Three Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Kirkuk

Three members of the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Infantry Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, died June 14 in Kirkuk, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.  Killed were:

Spc. Val J. Borm, 21, of Sidney, Nebraska.

Spc. Farid Elazzouzi, of Paterson, New Jersey.

Sgt. Derek T. Roberts, 24, of Gold River, California.

Blast Claims Reservist in Tallil

Army Cpl. Dustin R. Brisky, 26, of Round Rock, Texas, died June 14 in Tallil, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an explosion. Brisky was assigned to the Army Reserve's 952nd Engineer Company, Paris, Texas. The unit was attached to the 92nd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


ME Guard Member Killed by IED in Scania

Sgt. Richard K. Parker, 26, of Phillips, Maine, died June 14 in Scania, Iraq, from wounds suffered on June 13 when improvised explosive devices detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. He was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 152nd Field Artillery Regiment, Maine Army National Guard, Waterville, Maine.

Pvt. William C. Johnson, 22, of Oxford, North Carolina, died June 12 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Johnson was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  He entered the Army in September 2005 and began serving with the 1st Inf. Div. in February 2006. This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Spc. Damon G. Legrand, 27, of Lakeside, California, died June 12 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with anti-tank mines, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire in Baghdad, Iraq. Legrand was assigned to the 571st Military Police Company, 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Pfc. Cameron K. Payne, 22, of Corona, California, died June 11 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device that detonated near his vehicle during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq. Payne was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  He entered the Army in November 2005 and began serving with the 1st Inf. Div. in March 2006.  This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Staff Sgt. Brian M. Long, 32, of Burns, Wyoming, died June 10 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an explosive ordnance. Long was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.


Three Soldier Killed by IED in Karbala

Three soldiers died on June 10, in Karbala, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Two of the soldiers killed were members of the 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. They were:

Cpl. Llythaniele Fender, 21, of Medical Lake, Washington.

Cpl. Meresebang Ngiraked, 21, of Koror, Republic of Palau.

Also killed in the attack was

Spc. Adam G. Herold, 23, of Omaha, Nebraska. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Airman Killed by IED in Attack on Convoy

Airman 1st Class Eric M. Barnes, 20, of Lorain, Ohio, died June 10 as result of an improvised explosive device attack on an Air Force convoy about 100 miles south of Baghdad, Iraq. Barnes was assigned to the 90th Logistics Readiness Squadron, F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming.

Pvt. Scott A. Miller, 20, of Casper, Wyoming, died June 9 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire. Miller was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Sgt. Charles E. Wyckoff, Jr., 28, of Chula Vista, California, died June 6 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire. Wyckoff was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in As Sadah

Staff Sgt. Timothy B. Cole, Jr., 28, of Missouri City, Texas, died June 6 in As Sadah, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Cole was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Enemy Action Claims Two Soldiers in Baghdad

The Department of Defense reports that death of two members of the 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas on June 6 as a result of enemy action.  Killed were:

Pfc. Shawn D. Gajdos, 25, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, died June 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by insurgents using improvised explosive devices and small arms fire. Gajdos was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  He entered the Army in August 2005 and began serving with the 1st Infantry Division in December 2005. This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Sgt. 1st Class Greg L. Sutton, 38, of Spring Lake, North Carolina, died June 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device. Sutton was assigned to the 212th Military Transition Team, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He entered the Army in February 1991 and began serving with the 1st Inf. Div. in November 2006. This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Vimoto was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne) 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Camp Ederle, Italy.

Two Special Agents to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations died June 5 in Kirkuk, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Christopher was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Sgt. Kimel L. Watt, 21, of Brooklyn, New York, died June 3 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Watt was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Lowell was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Air Assault), 173rd Airborne Brigade, Camp Ederle, Italy.

Pfc. Joshua D. Brown, 26, of Tampa, Florida, died June 3 in Baghdad from injuries received when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations June 2 in Baghdad, Iraq. Brown was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.  Another member of his unit, Sgt. Shawn E. Dressler, was also injured in the incident and died June 2.


Two Soldiers Wounded by IED Blast in Baghdad

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany were injured when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations June 2 in Baghdad, Iraq. Both eventually died from their wounds; one on June 2, the other on June 3rd.

Sgt. Shawn E. Dressler, 22, of Santa Maria, California died June 2.

The other soldier, Pfc. Joshua D. Brown, 26, of Tampa, Florida, died June 3.
