IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Wilfred Flores, Jr., 20, of Lawton, Oklahoma, died March 31 in Baghdad, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Flores was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. Also injured in the attack was Staff Sgt. Jason R. Arnette who died April 1, 2007.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

1st Lt. Neale M. Shank, 25, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, died March 31 in Baghdad, Iraq, from a non-combat related incident. Shank was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.

Two Soldiers Die of Injuries Received in Vehicle Accident

Two members of the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina died March 29 in North Kabul, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered during a non-combat related vehicle accident on March 28 in North Kabul.  Killed were:

Spc. Agustin Gutierrez, 19, of San Jacinto, California.

Sgt. Edmund W. McDonald, 25, of Casco, Maine.


Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Korengal

Spc. Christopher M. Wilson, 24, Bangor, Maine, was killed during a firefight with enemy forces near Korengal, Afghanistan on March 29. Wilson was killed when a rocket propelled grenade exploded near his position. Three other Soldiers were wounded in the incident. Wilson was an infantryman assigned to the 10th Mountain Division's Company A, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment. Wilson enlisted in the Army in September 2002 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  In January 2003, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 78th Field Artillery Regiment, a unit that conducts initial entry training. In September 2004, Wilson was reassigned to Fort Drum where he served as a rifleman. Wilson deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in March 2006.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Wilson is survived by his daughter; mother; step-father; and sister.  Source: 10th Mtn. website.

IED Blast in Baghdad Kills Soldier

Sgt. Joe Polo, 24, of Opalocka, Florida, died March 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Polo was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Reservist Killed in Al Anbar Province

Staff Sgt. Marcus A. Golczynski, 30, of Lewisburg, Tennessee, died March 27 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Golczynski was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Nashville, Tennessee.

Soldiers Dies from a Non-Combat Related Illness

Sgt. Curtis J. Forshey, 22, of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, died March 27 in Homburg, Germany, of a non-combat related illness. Forshey was assigned to the 129th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

PA Guard Member Falls to Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Master Sgt. Sean M. Thomas, 33, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, died March 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using indirect fire during combat operations. Thomas was assigned to the 28th Division Support Command, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Source: PA-ARNG website. A U.S. contractor was also killed and five other people were wounded during the 7:27 p.m. incident in central Baghdad’s Green Zone. In a statement, Governor Edward G. Rendell said, "(Sgt. Thomas') dedication to this country is exemplified through his service record: After an eight-month deployment to Afghanistan in 2005, Sgt. Thomas spent less than a year at home before volunteering to serve in Iraq."  Col. Jesse Deets, Thomas' unit commander said, "We have lost one of our family members, and it hurts more than you will ever know. This hero will be in our hearts and minds not only for the remainder of this deployment, but for the rest of our lives," Thomas served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1992 to 1998 and joined the Pennsylvania National Guard on February 20, 1998. He worked full-time at the Fort Indiantown Gap Property Book Office. Thomas was posthumously promoted to Master Sergeant and awarded the Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge.  He is the 27th Pennsylvania National Guard member killed in action in Iraq.  Thomas is survived by his wife, Carrie, a sergeant in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard; a six month old daughter; his parents and brother. Four members of the 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina died March 25 in Baqubah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations. Killed were:

Springer was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Sgt. Greg N. Riewer, 30, of Frazee, Minnesota, died March 23 in Habbaniyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive devise detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Riewer was assigned to the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, Bemidji, Minnesota.

Pfc. Joey T. Sams II, 22, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, died March 21 at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, of injuries suffered when he was pinned between two vehicles. Sams was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.

Sgt. 1st Class Darrell R. Griffin, Jr., 36, of Alhambra, California, died March 21 in Balad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with small arms fire during combat operations. Griffin was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in March 15 IED Attack

Sgt. Nicholas J. Lightner, 29, of Newport, Oregon, died March 21 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on combat patrol March 15 in Baghdad, Iraq. Lightner was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Five other soldiers died in the attack.


Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire in Ramadi

Sgt. Adrian J. Lewis, 30, of Mauldin, South Carolina, died March 21 in Ramadi, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations. Lewis was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas died March 20 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations. Killed were:

Sgt. Wayne R. Cornell, 26, of Holstein, Nebraska.

Pfc. Stephen K. Richardson, 22, of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

A third soldier was reported killed on March 20 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  He was:

Spc. Curtis E. Glawson Jr., 24, of Daleville, Alabama. Glawson was assigned to the 610th Brigade Support Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Pfc. Anthony A. Kaiser, 27, of Narrowsburg, New York, died March 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Kaiser was assigned to the 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baqubah

Sgt. 1st Class Benjamin L. Sebban, 29, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, died March 17 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit. Sebban was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Injury

Sgt. Nimo W. Tauala, 29, of Honolulu, Hawaii, died March 17 in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, of a non-combat related injury. His death is under investigation. Tauala was assigned to the 209th Aviation Support Battalion, Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Spc. Marieo Guerrero, 30, of Fort Worth, Texas, died March 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Guerrero was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.


IED Blast Kills Four Soldiers in Baghdad

Four members of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas died March 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations. Killed were:

Rosema was assigned to the 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Falls to Small Arms Fire in Mugdadiyah

Spc. Stephen M. Kowalczyk, 32, of San Diego, died March 14 in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Kowalczyk was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Mufrek 

Cpl. Brian L. Chevalier, 21, of Athens, Georgia, died March 14 in Mufrek, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near him. Chevalier was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Spc. Joshua M. Boyd, 30, of Seattle, died March 14 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device exploded near his unit March 5 in Samarra, Iraq. Six other soldiers were killed in the attack (See March 5). Boyd was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Spc. Forrest J. Waterbury, 25, of Richmond, Texas, died March 14 near Ramadi, Iraq, when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Waterbury was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Spc. Jonathan K. Smith, 19, of Atlanta, Georgia, died March 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, of a non-combat related incident, which is under investigation. Smith was assigned to the 115th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received on Patrol

Sgt. Daniel E. Woodcock, 25, of Glennallen, Alaska, died March 11, in Ad Dawr, Iraq, of wounds suffered from a building explosion while on combat patrol. Woodcock was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. Thomas L. Latham, 23, of Delmar, Maryland, died March 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee. Latham was an infantryman assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.  He joined the Army in September 2002 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia. His first assignment was with the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, from January 2003 to March 2006, when he was reassigned to Fort Drum.  He deployed with his unit to Iraq in August 2006. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart Award, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Driver Badge. Graham was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Blast in Samara Kills Six Soldiers

Six members of the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died March 5 in Samarra, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their unit during combat operations.  Killed were:

Serviceman Killed by IED in Al Anbar Province

Hospitalman Lucas W.A. Emch, 21, of Kent, Ohio, died March 2, 2007, when an Improvised Explosive Device detonated in his vicinity while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Emch was a hospital corpsman assigned to 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Injury

Pvt. Wesley J. Williams, 23, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died March 2, in Baghdad, of a non-combat related injury. Williams was assigned to the 163d Military Intelligence Battalion, 504th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

CA Guard Member Killed by IED Blast in Safwan

Spc. Christopher D. Young, 20, of Los Angeles, California, died March 2 in Safwan, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Young was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 160th Infantry Regiment, California Army National Guard (CA-ARNG), San Pedro, California. Young enlisted in the California Army National Guard as a private on 18 October 2005, and entered active duty training on 8 November 2005 at Fort Lee, Virginia where he advanced to private first class. He completed his required active service on 27 April 2006, and was transferred to Company A (-), 40th Forward Support Battalion, CA-ARNG in Lynwood, California as a subsistence supply specialist. In August 2006, Young transferred to Company C as an armorer; and deployed with his unit to Iraq    Young was advanced to specialist on 17 October 2006 and posthumously promoted to sergeant on 2 March 2007. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, California Commendation Medal and California Federal Service Ribbon.
