Sgt. Chad M. Allen, 25, of Maple Lake, Minnesota, died February 28 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Allen was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Reservist Killed in Al Anbar Province

Pfc. Bufford K. Van Slyke, 22, of Bay City, Michigan, died February 28 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Van Slyke was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Saginaw, Michigan.

Pfc. Daniel Zizumbo, 27, of Chicago, Illinois, died February 27 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. Zizumbo was assigned to 1st Transportation Movement Control Agency, 21st Theater Support Command, Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Three Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Three members of the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York died February 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. The 2nd BCT deployed to Iraq in August 2006 and has conducted stability and support operations in southern areas of Baghdad. The unit is partnered with the members of the 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division to assist with their training and to improve their operational capabilities. Killed were:

Spc. Jonathan D. Cadavero, 24, of Takoma Park, Maryland was a health care specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.  Originally from Tuxedo, New York, Cadavero enlisted in the Army in March 2005 after completing a degree in psychology from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland, in 2004.  Following basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and advanced individual training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Cadavero was assigned to Fort Drum in January 2006.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Medical Badge.   Cadavero is survived by his wife, his mother, and his sister.

Cpl. Lorne E. Henry, Jr., 21, of Niagara Falls, New York, was a combat engineer assigned to Company A, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He enlisted in the Army in March 2004 and attended basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Following training he was assigned to the 41st Engineer Battalion in July 2004. As part of Army Transformation, the Army's reorganization into a more modular force in 2004, Henry was assigned to the newly created 3rd Brigade Combat Team in August 2004. Henry joined the Commando Brigade in September 2006 to participate in their deployment to Iraq.  His military awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. Henry is survived by his mother and his father.

Sgt. Richard A. Soukenka, 30, of Oceanside, California, was a combat engineer assigned to Company A, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He joined the Army in February 1999 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in November 1999.  He had several assignments before receiving a March 2005 assignment to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. Soukenka is survived by wife, his mother and his father.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Karl O. Soto-Pinedo, 22, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, died February 27 in Baghdad from wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire. Soto-Pineda was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Lance Cpl. Anthony Aguirre, 20, of Channelview, Texas, died February 26 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Aguirre was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Sgt. William J. Beardsley, 25, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, died February 26 in Diwaniyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Beardsley was assigned to the 260th Quartermaster Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Troop Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Soldier Loses Nearly Year-Long Battle to Recover

Spc. Ethan J. Biggers, 22, of Beavercreek, Ohio, died February 24 in Indianapolis, Indiana, of wounds suffered while on combat patrol in Baghdad, Iraq, on March 5, 2006. Biggers was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  He entered the Army in July 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell in November 2003.  Biggers is survived by his son and also by his mother.


Soldier Dies of Wounds Sustained in Attack

Sgt. Jeremy D. Barnett, 27, of Mineral City, Ohio, died February 24 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds sustained from a landmine detonation in Ad-Dujayl, Iraq, on February 21. Barnett was assigned to the3rdBattalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Blast Claims Three Soldiers in Ramadi

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado died February 23 of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq, on February 22. Killed were:

Pfc. Jason D. Johns, 19, of Frankton, Indiana, died February 21 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of a non-combat related injury. Johns was assigned to the 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marine Dies of Injuries Received in Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Angel R. Ramirez, 28, of Brooklyn, New York, died February 21 at Marine Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California, after being medically evacuated following a non-hostile incident in Al Qaim, Iraq, on December 21, 2006. Ramirez was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Sgt. Clinton W. Ahlquist, 23, of Creede, Colorado, died February 20 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Ahlquist was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. Richard L. Ford, 40, of East Hartford, Connecticut, died February 20 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered during combat operations. Ford was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Soldier Falls to Enemy Fire in Ramadi

Spc. Louis G. Kim, 19, of West Covina, California, died February 20 in Ramadi, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Kim was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Enemy Action Claims OK Guard Member

Sgt. Buddy J. Hughie, 25, of Poteau, Oklahoma, died February 19 in Kamdesh, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. Hughie was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry, Oklahoma Army National Guard, Ada, Oklahoma. The OK-ARNG issued a press release stating that Hughes and his unit were part of a joint mission with the Afghan National Army and the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division.  While returning from an undisclosed operation the joint force came under attack.  Hughie and his team members dismounted their vehicle and returned fire.  During the attack, two Afghan Army soldiers were wounded.  Seeing his comrades wounded, Hughie left his covered position to provide medical assistance.  Shortly after leaving his covered position, Hughie was killed by small arms fire.  The 180th deployed to Afghanistan in the summer of 2006 as part of a multinational task force whose mission is to train and mentor soldiers in the new Afghan National Army.  Members of the 180th Infantry provide security fro the international coalition of trainers and the Afghan trainees. Hughes was not required to deploy with the 180th because he had deployed to Afghanistan in 2002-2003 with an Engineer unit from South Carolina.  Hughes' commander said he volunteered to deploy with the 180th because he believed in the mission and his fellow 1/180th soldiers.

Marine Reservist Killed in Al Anbar Province

Pfc. Brett A. Witteveen, 20, of Shelby, Michigan, died February 19 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Witteveen was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Two Soldiers Fall to Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died February 19 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their unit came under attack by enemy forces using multiple weapons. Killed were:

Sgt. Pedro J. Colon, 25, of Cicero, Illinois.

Spc. Montrel S. Mcarn, 21, of Raeford, North Carolina.


Three Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Three members of the 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York died February 19 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when the vehicle they were in was struck by an improvised explosive device. Killed were:

Pfc. Matthew C. Bowe, 19, of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. Bowe was a health care specialist assigned to B Troop, 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment. He enlisted in the Army in July 2005 and completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. and advanced individual training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Bowe was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team in February 2006 to serve as a trauma specialist with 1-89 Cavalry. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Medical Badge. Bowe is survived by his parents.

Pfc. Adare W. Cleveland, 19, of Anchorage, Alaska was a cavalry scout assigned to B Troop, 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment. He joined the Army in July 2005 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was assigned to the Commando Brigade November 2005. Cleveland's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. Cleveland is survived by his mother and his father.

Sgt. Shawn M. Dunkin, 25, of Columbia, South Carolina. Dunkin 25 was cavalry scout noncommissioned officer assigned to B Troop, 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment. He enlisted in the Army in January 2001 and  was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, following his initial training. In October 2005, he was reassigned to Fort Drum to serve with the Commando Brigade's 1-89 Cavalry.  He previously deployed to Iraq with 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment in 2003.  Dunkin's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge and the Driver Badge. Dunkin is survived by his wife and parents.

Soldiers Identified in Helicopter Crash

The names of eight soldiers who wdied February 18 in southeastern Afghanistan when the Chinook helicopter they were in crashed have been released. Killed were:

Five members of the 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  They were:

Spc. Brandon D. Gordon, 21, of Naples, Florida.

Chief Warrant Officer Hershel D. McCants, Jr., 33, of Arizona.

Chief Warrant Officer John A. Quinlan, 36, of New Jersey.

Spc. Travis R. Vaughn, 26, of Reinbeck, Iowa.

Sgt. Adam A. Wilkinson, 23, of Fort Carson, Colorado.

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia. They were:

Pfc. Ryan C. Garbs, 20, of Edwardsville, Illinois.

Pfc. Kristofer D. S. Thomas, 18, of Roseville, California.

The Department of Defense also announced the following casualty:

Tech. Sgt. Scott E. Duffman, 32, of Albuquerque, New Mexico died February 18 when the coalition CH-47 helicopter he was riding in crashed in eastern Afghanistan. Duffman was assigned to the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina.

Pvt. Kelly D. Youngblood, 19, of Mesa, Arizona, died February 18 in Ramadi, Iraq, of wounds suffered during combat operations. Youngblood was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Soldier Killed in Grenade Attack in Baghdad

Pfc. Chad E. Marsh, 20, of Wichita, Kansas, died February 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when a grenade detonated near him during combat operations. Marsh was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Sgt. Matthew S. Apuan, 27, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, died February 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire while on combat patrol. Pfc. Justin T. Paton, 24, of Alanson, Michigan, died February 17 in Taramia, Iraq, when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Paton was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

MS Guard Member Dies from a Non-Combat Related Injury

Sgt. 1st Class William C. Spillers, 39, of Terry, Mississippi, died February 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, from a non-combat related injury. Spillers was assigned to the 230th Finance Detachment, Jackson, Mississippi.


GA Guard Member Dies from a Non-Combat Related Injury

Spc. Christopher K. Boone, 34, died February 17 in Balad, Iraq, of a non-combat related injury. Boone was assigned to the 121st Infantry (Long Range Surveillance), Georgia Army National Guard, Fort Gillem, Georgia.

Cpl. Timothy D. Lewis, 20, of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, died February 15 as a result of non-hostile action in Jolo, Republic of the Philippines. Lewis was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Fighting Claims Marine in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. Daniel T. Morris, 19, of Crimora, Virgnina, died February 14 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Morris was a rifleman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  Morris joined the Marine Corps September 2005 and reported to Hawaii March 2006. He deployed to Iraq September 2006. His awards include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Soldier Dies from Enemy Action in Baghdad

Sgt. First Class Allen Mosteiro, 42, of Fort Worth, Texas, died February 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire during combat operations February 13 in Taji, Iraq. Mosteiro was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baqubah

Pfc. Branden C. Cummings, 20, of Titusville, Florida, died February 14 in Baqubah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device exploded near his vehicle during combat operations. Cummings was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Three Soldiers Killed by IED in Baqubah

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died February 14 in Baqubah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.  Killed were:

Sailor Dies of Natural Causes While on Ship

Petty Officer 2nd Class Laquita Pate James, 23, of Orange Park, Florida, died February 12 of apparent natural causes while deployed aboard the multipurpose amphibious assault ship the USS Bataan. The cause of death is under investigation.

Soldier Killed in Fallajah

Sgt. Russell A. Kurtz, 22, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, died in Fallajah, Iraq, February 11 of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Kurtz was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


Soldier Killed While on Patrol in Baghdad

Sgt. Robert B. Thrasher, 23, of Folsom, California, died February 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire during combat patrol. Thrasher was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.


Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Spc. Dennis L. Sellen, Jr., 20, of Newhall, California, died February 11 in Umm Qasr, Iraq, of non-combat related injuries. Sellen was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 185th Infantry Regiment, Fresno, California.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Baqubah

Capt. Donnie R. Belser, Jr., 28, of Anniston, Alabama, died February 10 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire during combat operations. Belser was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division and attached to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team with the 1st Cavalry Division. Belser was an advisor assigned to the 524th Transition Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  The 524th TT was attached for operational purposes to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team with the 1st Cavalry Division. Before deploying to Iraq as an advisor, Belser was assigned to the 610th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. He entered the Army in April 2001 and began serving in the 1st Infantry Division in October 2001. This was Belser's third deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.  Belser's death brings the total number of Soldiers deployed from Fort Riley to have died supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom to 84.

Sgt. Long N. Nguyen, 27, of Portland, Oregon, died February 10 in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan, of a non-combat related wound. Nguyen was assigned to the 141st Brigade Support Battalion, Portland, Oregon. The incident is under investigation.

Three Soldiers Killed by IED in Baqubah

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died February 9 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered from an explosion during breaching operations.

Killed were:

Spc. Leeroy A. Camacho, 28, of Saipan, Mariana Islands.

Staff Sgt. Eric Ross, 26, of Kenduskeag, Maine.

Staff Sgt. Alan W. Shaw, 31, of Little Rock, Arkansas.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast While on Patrol

Sgt. James J. Regan, 26, of Manhasset, New York, died February 9 in northern Iraq of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on combat patrol. Regan was a fire team leader with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia. Regan joined the Army after earning a degree in economics from Duke University. He was a three time veteran of the Global War on Terrorism, having served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Regan was planning to get married in March 2008, a month after his enlistment was to end. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal. His other awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab and Parachutist Badge. Regan was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Three ID Guard Members Killed by IED in Baqubah

Three members of the 321st Engineer Battalion, Boise, Idaho died February 8 in Karmah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their unit while on combat patrol. Two other guard members were injured in the blast. Killed were:

Fighting Claims Two Marines and Two Reservists in Al Anbar Province

Two Marines and two Marine Reservist were killed as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province.  The Marines were:

Sgt. Maj. Joseph J. Ellis, 40, of Ashland, Ohio, died February 7 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Ellis was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Cpl. Jennifer M. Parcell, 20, of Bel Air, Maryland, died February 7 while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Parcell was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

The reservists were:

Pfc. Tarryl B. Hill, 19, of Shelby Township, Michigan, died February 7 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Hill was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Mount Clemens, Michigan.

Lance Cpl. Matthew P. Pathenos, 21, of Ballwin, Missouri, died February 7 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Pathenos was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Bridgeton, Missouri.


Seven Marines Killed in Helicopter Crash in Al Anbar Province

Seven Marines died February 7 when the helicopter they were flying in crashed while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. The crash was determined to be a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Killed were:

Four members of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.  They were:

Capt. Jennifer J. Harris, 28, of Swampscott, Massachusetts.

1st Lt. Jared M. Landaker, 25, of Big Bear City, California.

Sgt. Travis D. Pfister, 27, of Richland, Washington.

Sgt. James R. Tijerina, 26, of Beasley, Texas.

Also killed in the incident were:

Petty Officer 1st Class Gilbert Minjares, Jr., 31, of El Paso, Texas. Minjares was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Cherry Point, North Carolina.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Manuel A. Ruiz, 21, of Federalsburg, Maryland. Ruiz was assigned to 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Cpl. Thomas E. Saba, 30, of Toms River, New Jersey. Saba was assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262, Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Sgt. Joshua J. Frazier, 24, of Spotsylvania, Virginia, died February 6 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Frazier was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Enemy Action in Baghdad Claims Soldier

Pfc. Brian A. Browning, 20, of Astoria, Oregon, died February 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire while conducting security operations. Browning was a rifleman assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. Browning enlisted in the Army in July 2005 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, to be an infantry Soldier. After completion of basic and advanced individual training, he was assigned to the Commando Brigade. Browning deployed with his unit to Iraq in August 2006. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. Browning is survived by his parents.

Two Soldiers Killed by Small Arms Fire in Ramadi

Two soldiers died February 2 in Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries sustained when they came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire.  Killed were:

Spc. Alan E. McPeek, 20, of Tucson, Arizona. McPeek was assigned to the 16th Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Giessen, Germany.

Pvt. Matthew T. Zeimer, 18, of Glendive, Montana. Zeimer was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Helicopter Forced Down in Taji - Killing Crew

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died February 2 in Taji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their Apache helicopter was forced to land during combat operations.  Killed were:

Chief Warrant Officer Jason G. Defrenn, 34, of Barnwell, South Carolina.

Chief Warrant Officer Keith Yoakum, 41, of Hemet, California.


IED Blast in Baghdad Kills Two Soldiers 

Two members of the died 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. died February 2 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.   Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Terrence D. Dunn, 38, of Houston. Dunn, a quartermaster and chemical equipment repair noncommissioned officer, was assigned to Company B,  was assigned to the 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.  Dunn enlisted in the Army in December 1990 and completed training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, before accepting the first of many assignments in July 1991. Dunn arrived at Fort Drum in May 2006 and was assigned to the 2nd BCT. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and the Driver-Mechanic Badge.  Dunn is survived by his wife, two brothers and two Sisters, and several nieces and nephews.  Source: 10th Mtn. Capt. Kevin C. Landeck, 26, of Illinois. Landeck, an infantry officer, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.  Landeck was commissioned in May 2004 after graduating from Purdue University with a degree in criminal justice.  After completing the Infantry Officer Basic Course in September 2005, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment later that month. In August 2006, he was reassigned to 2-15 Field Artillery to serve as an advisor to the Iraqi Army. Landeck's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge. Gunnery Sgt. Terry J. Elliott, 34, of Middleton, Tennessee, died February 1 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Elliott was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Hospitalman Matthew G. Conte, 22, of Mogadore, Ohio, died February 1 while his unit was conducting combat operations against enemy forces in the Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Conte was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii serving as a hospital corpsman in Iraq under the command of I Marine Expeditionary Force (forward).


Marine Dies from a Non-Hostile Cause

Cpl. Richard O. Quill III, 22, of Roswell, Georgia, died February 1 from a non-hostile cause in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Quill was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Two Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Accident in Baghdad

Two members of the 57th Military Police Company, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Pacific, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii died February 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered from a vehicular accident.  Killed were:

Pfc. David C. Armstrong, 21, of Zanesville, Ohio.

Pfc. Kenneth T. Butler, 21, of East Liverpool, Ohio.


Soldier Killed in Vehicle Roll Over in Buritz

Spc. Eric R. Sieger, 18, of Layton, Utah, died February 1 at Buritz, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle rolled over. Sieger was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

MI Guard Member Dies from Non-Combat Related Injury

Sgt. Maj. Michael C. Mettille, 44, of West St. Paul, Minnesota, died February 1 at Camp Adder, Iraq, from a non-combat related injury. Mettille was assigned to the 134th Brigade Support Battalion, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, four children and parents.
