Cpl. Stephen D. Shannon, 21, of Guttenberg, Iowa, died January 31, in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was hit by a rocket during combat operations January 30 in Ramadi, Iraq. Shannon was assigned to the 397th Engineer Battalion, Wausau, Wisconsin.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Bayji

Sgt. William M. Sigua, 21, of Los Altos Hills, California, died January 31 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire during combat operations. Sigua was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

IED Blast Kills Two Soldiers in Ramadi

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany died January 30 at Ramadi, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations.  Killed were:

Sgt. Corey J. Aultz, 31, of Port Orchard, Washington.

Helicopter Downed in Najaf - Killing Crew

Two members of the 4th Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died January 28 in Najaf, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their helicopter crashed during combat operations. Killed were:

Chief Warrant Officer Cornell C. Chao, 36, of California.

Capt. Mark T. Resh, 28, of Pittsburgh.


Soldier Killed in Vehicle Roll Over

Spc. Carla J. Stewart, 37, of Sun Valley, California, died January 28 in Tallil, Iraq, of injuries suffered when her convoy vehicle rolled over. Stewart was assigned to the 250th Transportation Company, El Monte, California.

Lance Cpl. Anthony C. Melia, 20, of Thousand Oaks, California, died January 27 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Melia was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Taji

Sgt. Mickel D. Garrigus, 24, of Elma, Wash., died January 27 in Taji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat patrol. Garrigus was assigned to the 543rd Military Police Company, 91st Police Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.


IED Blast Kills Three Soldiers in Taji

Three members of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, died January 27 in Taji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during convoy operations. Killed were:

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baqubah

Pfc. Nathan P. Fairlie, 21, of Candor, New York, died of injuries suffered in Baqubah on Jan. 26 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Bradley Fighting Vehicle during combat operations. Fairlie was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Claims Reservist in Balad

Maj. Alan R. Johnson, 44, of Yakima, Washington, died January 26 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee at Muqdadiyah, Iraq, the same day. Johnson was assigned to the 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion, Tonawanda, New York.

Approximately 96 percent of the soldiers serving in Civil Affairs battalions are reservists. They are the Army's on-site non-combat specialists: civil and electrical engineers, doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, immigration officers, masons, computer specialists, community liaisons and emergency management specialists.  They are deployed as small multi-disciplinary teams that work with civil authorities and civilian populations in the commander's area of operation to lessen the impact of military operations and provide aid to the local population.

Cpl. Mark D. Kidd, 26, of Milford, Michigan, died January 25 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Kidd was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Mount Clemens, Michigan.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Pfc. Darrell W. Shipp, 25, of San Antonio, Texas, died January 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Shipp was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Two Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Two members of the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado died January 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Hector Leija, 27, of Houston, Texas, died January 24 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered during combat operations. Leija was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. 1st Class Keith A. Callahan, 31, of McClure, Pennsylvania, died January 24 of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting a combat patrol south of Baghdad, Iraq. Callahan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Fighting Claims Two Marines in Al Anbar Province

Two members of the III Marine Expeditionary Force Okinawa, Japan died January 23 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province.  Killed were:

Sgt. Gary S. Johnston, 21, of Windthorst, Texas died January 23 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Johnston was assigned to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force Okinawa, Japan.

Sgt. Michael M. Kashkoush, 24, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, died January 23 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Kashkoush was assigned to 3rd Intelligence Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Injury

Staff Sgt. Michael J. Wiggins, 26, of Cleveland, Ohio, died January 23 in Balad, Iraq, of a non-combat related injury. Wiggins was assigned to the 79th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Battalion, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in Mosul

Spc. Nicholas P. Brown, 24, of Huber Heights, Ohio, died January 22 in Mosul, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Brown was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Karmah

Staff Sgt. Jamie D. Wilson, 34, of San Diego, California, died January 22 in Fallujah, Iraq, from wounds suffered while conducting security operations in Karmah, Iraq. Wilson was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

MI Guard Member Killed in Baghdad

Spc. Brandon L. Stout, 23, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, died January 22 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an explosively formed projectile detonated near his vehicle. Stout was assigned to the 46th Military Police Company, Michigan Army National Guard, Kingsford, Michigan.

Three Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Fighting claimed three Marines in Al Anbar Province on January 21, 2007.  Killed were two members of the I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.  They were:

Lance Cpl. Andrew G. Matus, 19, of Chetek, Wisconsin, died January 21 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Matus was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Lance Cpl. Emilian D. Sanchez, 20, of Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, died January 21 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Sanchez was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Also killed was:

Cpl. Darrel J. Morris, 21, of Spokane, Washington, died January 21 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Morris was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED  Blast Kills Soldier in Baji

Sgt. Jonathan P. C. Kingman, 21, of Nankin, Ohio, died January 20 near Baji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 41st Engineer Company, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


Four Soldier Killed by IED Blast  in Karbala

Four members of the 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska died January 20 in Karbala, Iraq, from wounds sustained when their patrol was ambushed while conducting dismounted operations. Killed were:

Spc. Johnathan B. Chism, 22, of Gonzales, Louisiana.

Pfc. Shawn P. Falter, 25, of Cortland, New York.

1st Lt. Jacob N. Fritz, 25, of Verdon, Nebraska.

Four Soldiers Killed by IED in Karma

Four members of the 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne), 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska died January 20 in Karma, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Humvee.

Killed were:

Spc. Jeffrey D. Bisson, 22, of Vista, California.

Sgt. Sean P. Fennerty, 25, of Corvallis, Oregon.

Sgt. Phillip D. McNeill, 22, of Sunrise, Florida.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad 

Pfc. Ryan J. Hill, 20, of Keizer, Oregon, died January 20 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee.  Hill was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Mosul

Capt. Brian S. Freeman, 31, of Temecula, California, died January 20 in Karbala, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his meeting area came under attack by mortar and smalls arms fire. Freeman was assigned to the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion, Whitehall, Ohio.


Soldier Dies in IED Blast

Pfc. Allen B. Jaynes, 21, of Henderson, Texas, died January 20 in Iraq of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Jaynes was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Twelve Soldiers Identified in Black Hawk Crash

The Department of Defense announced today the death of 12 soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.  They died in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 20, when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter they were in crashed. Killed were:

Col. Brian D. Allgood, 46, of Oklahoma, who was assigned to the 30th Medical Brigade, European Regional Medical Command, Heidelberg, Germany.

Also killed were the following National Guardsmen:

Cpl. Victor M. Langarica, 29, of Decatur, Georgia, who was assigned to the 86th Signal Battalion, Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Sgt. 1st Class John G. Brown, 43, of Little Rock, Arkansas, who was assigned to the Arkansas Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 185th Aviation Regiment (Air Assault), 77th Aviation Brigade, Camp Robinson, Arkansas.

Maj. Michael V. Taylor, 40, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, who was assigned to the Arkansas Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 185th Aviation Regiment (Air Assault), 77th Aviation Brigade, Camp Robinson, Arkansas.

1st Sgt. William T. Warren, 48, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, who was assigned to the Arkansas Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 185th Aviation Regiment (Air Assault), 77th Aviation Brigade, Camp Robinson, Arkansas.

A member of the Iowa Army National Guard

Command Sgt. Maj. Marilyn L. Gabbard, 46, of Polk City, Iowa, who was assigned to Joint Forces Headquarters, Iowa Army National Guard, Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa. Gabbard began her 27-year military career as a private in the Iowa Army National Guard in October 1979, serving as a personnel management specialist with Detachment 2, 47th Adjutant General Company, Boone. She last served as the State Operations Sergeant Major at the Iowa National Guard’s Joint Forces Headquarters in Johnston. Upon her promotion to Command Sergeant Major in 2001, Gabbard became the Iowa National Guard’s first female Command Sergeant Major and only the second woman promoted to Sergeant Major in the Iowa National Guard. Among her military decorations are three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, which is bestowed to "members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement or service to the United States." She has also served as the national Secretary for the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States, as Past President (Army) of the Enlisted Association of the Iowa National Guard and as Past President of the Iowa Sergeants Major Association. Gabbard is survived by her husband, daughter, step-son, five step-daughters, her mother, sister, two brothers; two grandchildren, and eight step-grandchildren.  Source: IA-ARNG

Command Sgt. Maj. Roger W. Haller, 49, of Davidsonville, Maryland, who was assigned to the 70th Regiment, Regional Training Institute - Maryland, Maryland Army National Guard, Reisterstown, Maryland.

Capt. Sean E. Lyerly, 31, of Pflugerville, Texas, who was assigned to the Texas Army National Guard's 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, 36th Infantry Division, Austin, Texas.

Two members of the U.S. Virgin Islands Army National Guard

Lt. Col. David C. Canegata, 50, of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, who was assigned to the Virgin Islands Army National Guard, Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Staff Sgt. Floyd E. Lake, 43, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, who was assigned to the Virgin Islands Army National Guard, Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Two members of the Virginia Army National Guard

Staff Sgt. Darryl D. Booker, 37, of Midlothian, Virginia, who was assigned to the 29th Infantry Division, Virginia Army National Guard, Sandston, Virginia and worked as a full time employee at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Sandston, Virginia. Booker had also deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina with the 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation in Sept. 2001 as well as served on an earlier deployment to Iraq.

 

Col. Paul M. Kelly, 45, of Stafford, Virginia, who was assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters of the Virginia Army National Guard in Blackstone, Virginia.

The incident is under investigation.

Cpl. Jacob H. Neal, 23, of San Marcos, Texas, died January 19 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Neal was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Sgt. 1st Class Russell P. Borea, 38, of El Paso, Texas, died of injuries suffered in Mosul on January 19 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Borea was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Sailor Dies in Non-Combat Related Incident

Petty Officer 2nd Class Joseph D. Alomar, 22, of Brooklyn, New York, died in a non-combat related incident January 17, 2007, at Camp Bucca, Iraq, where he was assigned to the Navy Provisional Detention Battalion. Alomar's death was not the result of hostile action, but occurred in a hostile fire zone. Alomar's death is under investigation.

Sailor Dies in Non-Combat Related Incident in Bahrain

Petty Officer 1st Class Jennifer A. Valdivia, 27, of Cambridge, Illinois, was discovered deceased on January 16, 2007, in Bahrain. Valdivia was assigned to the naval security force for Naval Support Activity, Bahrain. Valdivia's death was a non-combat related incident in Bahrain, which is located within the designated hostile fire zone. Valdivia's death is under investigation.

Spc. Jason J. Corbett, 23, of Casper, Wyoming, died January 15 of injuries sustained when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations in Karmah, Iraq. Corbett was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. Paul T. Sanchez, 32, of Irving, Texas, died January 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Sanchez was assigned to the 543rd Military Police Company, 91st Military Police Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.  Sanchez enlisted in the Army in October 2000 and trained at Fort Gordon, Georgia, to be a multichannel transmission systems operator-maintainer. His first assignment was as a transmission system operator with 121st Signal Battalion at Larson Barracks in Kitzingen, Germany. In June 2004 he was reassigned to serve as the driver for the commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division at Leighton Barracks in Wuerzburg, Germany. In 2005, Sanchez retrained to be a military policeman and was assigned to Fort Drum in November 2005. Sanchez previously deployed to Iraq with the 1st Infantry Division from February 2004 to February 2005. Sanchez' awards and decoration include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge and Driver Badge. He is survived by his wife, who lives at Fort Drum, and his two children who live in Texas.

ID Guard Member Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Spc. James D. Riekena, 22, of Redmond, Washington, died January 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Riekena was assigned to the 145th Brigade Support Battalion, Post Falls, Idaho.

Wosika was assigned to the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry, Crookston, Minnesota. He is the 10th Minnesota guardsman killed in Iraq and the 43rd member of the military from the state to die since the war started in 2003.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Ar Ramadi

Pfc. Ming Sun, 20, of Cathedral City, California, died January 9 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat patrol operations. Sun was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Fighting in Baqubah Claims Soldier

Pfc. Ryan R. Berg, 19, of Sabine Pass, Texas, died January 9 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Berg was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two Soldiers Killed by Enemy Fire

Two members of the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas were killed by enemy fire.  Killed were:

Spc. Eric T. Caldwell, 22, of Salisbury, Maryland, died January 7 in Iraq of wounds sustained when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Caldwell was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Cpl. Stephen J. Raderstorf, 21, of Peoria, Arizona, died January 7 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained during combat operations. Raderstorf was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Three Airmen Killed by IED in Baghdad

Three members of the 775th Civil Engineer Squadron, Hill Air Force Base, Utah were killed January 7 by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device while performing duties in the Baghdad area.  Killed were:

Senior Airman Elizabeth A. Loncki, 23, of New Castle, Delaware.

Senior Airman Daniel B. Miller Jr., 24, Galesburg, Illinois.

Tech. Sgt. Timothy R. Weiner, 35, of Tamarac, Florida.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Roll Over

Cpl. Jeremiah J. Johnson, 23, of Vancouver, Washington, died January 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle rolled over December 26 in Baghdad. Johnson was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Baghdad

Spc. Raymond N. Mitchell, III, 21, of West Memphis, Arkansas, died January 6 in Baghdad, Iraq of wounds sustained during route security operations. Mitchell was an assistant machine gunner assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.  He enlisted in the Army in June 2005 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  Following his training, Mitchell was assigned to Fort Drum's 2-14 Infantry, also known as the ‘Golden Dragons.'  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Maj. Michael L. Mundell, 47, of Brandenburg, Kentucky, died January 5 in Fallujah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Mundell was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 108th Division (Institutional Training), Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Staff Sgt. Charles D. Allen, 28, of Wasilla, Alaska, died January 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations. Allen was assigned to the 296th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Sgt. Thomas E. Vandling Jr., 26, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania died January 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on combat patrol. Vandling was assigned to the 303rd Psychological Operations Company, Oakdale, Pennsylvania, a subordinate unit of the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
