Two Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Baqubah

Two members of the 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died December 31 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while they were conducting a combat patrol. Killed were:

Cpl. Jonathan E. Schiller, 20, of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Spc. Richard A. Smith, 20, of Grand Prairie, Texas.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Pfc. Alan R. Blohm, 21, of Kenai, Alaska, died December 31 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on combat patrol. Blohm was assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Sgt. John M. Sullivan, 22, of Hixon, Tennessee, died December 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on combat patrol. Sullivan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Enemy Action in Baghdad Claims Soldier

Two members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Schweinfurt, Germany died December 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations.  Killed were:

 

Sgt. Lawrence J. Carter, 25, of Rancho Cucamonga, California. Carter was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Pfc. William R. Newgard, 20, of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Newgard was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.


Small Arms Fire Claims Soldier in Ar Ramadi

Pvt. David E. Dietrich, 21, of Marysville, Pennsylvania, died December 29 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire while on combat patrol. Dietrich was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany.

Marine Dies of Non-Hostile Cause in Al Anbar Province

Sgt. Aron C. Blum, 22, of Tucson, Arizona, died December 28 at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California, of a non-hostile cause after being evacuated from Al Anbar Province, Iraq, on December 8. Blum was assigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.


 U.S. MARINE RESERVES

Three Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Three Marine Reservists died on December 28 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

Two of the Marines were assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Lansing, Michigan. They were:

Cpl. Christopher E. Esckelson, 22, of Vassar, Michigan.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas A. Miller, 20, of Silverwood, Michigan.

Also killed was:

Lance Cpl. William D. Spencer, 20, of Paris, Tennessee. Spencer was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Nashville, Tennessee.

Enemy Action in Baghdad Claims Soldier

Spc. Dustin R. Donica, 22, of Spring, Texas, died December 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds received from small arms fire while conducting combat operations. Donica was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Taji

Spc. Luis G. Ayala, 21, of South Gate, California, died December 28 in Taji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on combat patrol. Ayala was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Lance Cpl. William C. Koprince, Jr., 24, of Lenoir City, Tennessee died December 27 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Koprince was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Pvt. Clinton T. McCormick, 20, of Jacksonville, Florida, died December 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations. McCormick was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Ar Ramadi

Sgt. Edward W. Shaffer, 23, of Mont Alto, Pennsylvania, died December 27 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, of injuries sustained on November 13 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated nearby. Shaffer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany.


Two Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Two members of the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2d Brigade Combat Team, Fort Drum, New York, died December 27 in Baghdad of wounds received from an improvised explosive device that detonated near them while on dismounted patrol. Killed were:

Pfc. Nathaniel A. Given, 21, of Dickinson, Texas, enlisted in the Army in June 2005 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, to be an infantry Soldier.  He was assigned to 4-31 Infantry Regiment in November 2005.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Sgt. Christopher P. Messer, 28, of Petersburg, Florida.  Messer enlisted in the Army in February 2003 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia. In October 2003 he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment at Ledward Barracks, Schweinfurt, Germany.  In July 2005, he was reassigned to 4-31 Infantry Regiment at Fort Drum.  Messer participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2004 to March 2005.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with 'V' device, Valorous Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge and the Driver Badge.

Cpl. Joshua M. Schmitz, 21, of Spencer, Wisconsin died December 26 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Schmitz was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. John T. Bubeck, 25, of Collegeville, Pennsylvania died December 26 died of wounds he received December 25 in Baghdad, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.  Bubeck was assigned to the 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.


Two Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Accident

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska died of injuries suffered when the vehicle they were in was involved in a rollover incident on December 26 in Baghdad, Iraq.  Killed were:

 

Spc. Joseph A. Strong, 21, of Lebanon, Indiana.

Spc. Douglas L. Tinsley, 21, of Chester, South Carolina.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. Jason C. Denfrund, 24, of Cattaraugus, New York, died December 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on patrol. Denfrund was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  Denfrund enlisted in the Army in June 2001 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  His first duty assignment was with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade at Rose Barracks, Vilseck, Germany.  Denfrund was reassigned to Fort Drum in December 2003. He had previously deployed to Kosovo and Iraq.  Among his many awards and decorations are the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medal.  Denfrund is survived by his wife, stepdaughter and son.


IED Blast in Baghdad Claims Two Soldiers

Two members of the 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany died of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations December 25 in Baghdad, Iraq. Killed were:

Pfc. Andrew H. Nelson, 19, of Saint Johns, Michigan.

Spc. Aaron L. Preston, 29, of Dallas.

Another soldier, Sgt. John T. Bubeck, was injured in the attack.  He later died December 26.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Sgt. 1st Class Dexter E. Wheelous, 37, of Winder, Georgia, died December 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Wheelous was assigned to the 842nd Military Training and Transition team, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


Soldier Killed by IED in Balad

Capt. Hayes Clayton, 29, of Georgia, died December 25 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting combat operations. Clayton was assigned to the 842nd Military Training and Transition team, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Sgt. Jae S. Moon, 21, of Levittown, Pennsylvania, died December 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol December 14 in Baghdad. Moon was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


MP Dies from Non-Combat Related Injury

Pfc. Eric R. Wilkus, 20, of Hamilton, New Jersey, died December 25 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, of a non-combat related injury December 22 in Baghdad, Iraq. Wilkus was assigned to the 57th Military Police Company, 8th Military Police Brigade, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Pvt. Evan A. Bixler, 21, of Racine, Wisconsin, died December 24 in Hit, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy indirect fire during security operations. Bixler was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Baumholder, Germany.

IED Blasts in Baghdad Claim Two Soldiers

Two soldiers died December 23 from IED blasts. Killed were:

Sgt. Curtis L. Norris, 28, of Dansville, Michigan, died December 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Norris was a motor transport operator assigned to Company F, 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  He joined in the Army in February 1999 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  Norris was assigned to 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Battalion at Camp Essayons, South Korea. In November 2002, he was assigned to 524th Corps Support Battalion at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.  He was reassigned in December 2005 to serve with the 2nd BCT at Fort Drum. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

 

Spc. Elias Elias, 27, of Glendora, California, died December 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol. Elias was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Killed by Enemy Action in Buhritz

Spc. John Barta, 25, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died December 23 in Buhritz, Iraq, of wounds suffered from indirect enemy fire during combat operations. Barta was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injury

Spc. Michael J. Crutchfield, 21, of Stockton, California, died December 23 in Balad, Iraq, of a non-combat related injury. Crutchfield was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

IED Blast Kills Three MI Guard Members

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry, Big Rapids, Michigan died December 23 in Salman Pak, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations. Killed were:

Pfc. Wilson A. Algrim, 21, of Howell, Michigan.

Pvt. Bobby Mejia II, Saginaw, Michigan.

Spc. Chad J. Vollmer, 24, of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Joshua D. Sheppard, 22, of Quinton, Oklahoma, died December 22 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his patrol came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire. Sheppard was a heavy construction equipment operator assigned to the 642nd Engineer Support Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  He enlisted in the Army in July 2003 and completed basic combat training at Fort Benning, Georgia. In November 2003, he completed advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Sheppard was assigned to Fort Drum in December 2003. He deployed to Iraq in September 2006 with his unit. While in Iraq, he served with his unit under the 20th Engineer Battalion in Baghdad.  His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Sheppard is survived by his mother.

Lance Cpl. Fernando S. Tamayo, 19, of Fontana, California, died December 21 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Tamayo was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Hospitalman Kyle A. Nolen, 21, of Ennis, Texas, died December 21 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, as a result of enemy action. Nolen was assigned to H Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, 29 Palms, California.

IED Blasts Claim Three Soldiers in Baghdad

Three soldiers were killed in Baghdad, Iraq on December 20 as a result of IED blasts.  Killed were:

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska died December 20 of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.  The IED attack was followed by enemy small arms fire. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Jacob G. McMillan, 25, of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Also killed was

Spc. Robert J. Volker, 21, of Big Spring, Texas, died December 20 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV. Volker was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Phaneuf was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Brigade, Hartford, Connecticut.

Soldier Killed by Small Arms Fire in Ar Ramadi

Pfc. Paul Balint, Jr., 22, of Willow Park, Texas, died December 15 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his unit came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire during combat operations. Balint was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Staff Sgt. Henry K. Kahalewai, 43, of Hilo, Hawaii, died December 15 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, of wounds suffered November 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Stryker vehicle. Kahalewai was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Lance Cpl. Matthew W. Clark, 22, of St. Louis, Missouri died December 14 due to injuries suffered from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Clark was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Lance Cpl. Luke C. Yepsen, 20, of Kingwood, Texas died December 14 due to injuries suffered from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Yepsen was assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Staff Sgt. Theodore A. Spatol, 59, of Thermopolis, Wyoming, died of a non-combat related illness in Thermopolis on December 14. Spatol was assigned to the 1041st Engineer Company, Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Maj. Gloria D. Davis, 47, of St. Louis, Missouri, died December 12 in Baghdad, Iraq, from a non-combat related incident. Davis was assigned to the Defense Security Assistance Agency, Washington, D.C.

Cpl. Dustin J. Libby, 22, of Presque Isle, Maine, died December 6 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Libby was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Maj. Megan M. McClung, 34, of Coupeville, Washington, died December 6 while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. McClung was assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, I MEF, Camp Pendleton, California.


Marine Dies from Non-Hostile Incident in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. Cody G. Watson, 21, of Oxford, Alabama, died December 6 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Watson was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Sgt. Yevgeniy Ryndych, 24, of Brooklyn, New York, died December 6 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on patrol. Ryndych was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Spc. Nicholas R. Five Soldiers Killed in IED Attack in Hawijah

Five soldiers died December 6 in Hawijah, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle while on patrol. Four of the five soldiers killed were members of the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. They were:

Miller was assigned to the 3rd Battalion Support Company, 20th Special Forces Group, Camp Blanding, Florida.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Spc. Jordan W. Hess, 26, of Marysville, Washington, died December 5 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of injuries suffered on November 11 in Ta'Meem, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his combat patrol. Hess was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Sgt. Jay R. Gauthreaux, 26, of Thibodaux, Louisiana, died December 4 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in Baqubah, Iraq, when in improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol. Gauthreaux was assigned to the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Enemy Action Claims Navy Corpsman in Al Anbar Province

Hospitalman Christopher A. Anderson, 24, of Longmont, Colorado, died December 4 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Anderson was a Navy Corpsman assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Four Military Personnel Killed in Helicopter Crash in Al Anbar Province

Three Marines and one soldier died December 3 when the CH-46 helicopter they were in crashed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Killed were:

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii They were:

Maj. Joseph T. McCloud, 39, of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.  McCloud was an infantry officer who enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1990 and was commissioned in April 1992. He reported to Hawaii April 2006 and was assigned as the operations officer.  McCloud’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Combat Action Ribbon, seven Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, NATO Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), United Nations Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), and four Southwest Asia Service Medals.

Cpl. Joshua C. Sticklen, 24, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Sticklen was an intelligence specialist who enlisted in the Marine Corps October 2002. He reported to Hawaii July 2003.  Sticklen’s awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Korean Defense Service Medal.

Also killed were

Capt. Kermit O. Evans, 31, of Hollandale, Mississippi died when the U.S. Marine Corps CH-46 helicopter he was riding in made an emergency water landing in western Al Anbar Province, December 3.  Evans was assigned to the 27th Civil Engineer Squadron, Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico and was deployed with the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, Balad Air Base, Iraq.

Specialist Dustin M. Adkins, 22,  of Finger, Tennessee, died when the U.S. Marine Corps CH-46 helicopter he was riding in made an emergency water landing in western Al Anbar Province, Sunday, December 3. His whereabouts were "unknown," from December 3 until December 5 when search and recovery efforts identified his remains. Adkins was a dental specialist assigned to the Group Support Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group.  He enlisted in the Army May 20, 2003, as a dental specialist. After completing basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and advanced individual training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, he was assigned to the GSB, 5th SFG in November 2003. He deployed on his second tour of duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in August 2006. Adkins is survived by his wife, his son and daughter, and his mother and father. (Source: Ft. Pvt. Troy D. Cooper, 21, of Amarillo, Texas, died December 3 of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Balad, Iraq. Cooper was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Spc. Kenneth W. Haines, 25, of Fulton, New York, died December 3 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol in Abu Hishma, Iraq. Haines was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Capt. Shawn L. English, 35, of Westerville, Ohio, died December 3 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. English was assigned to the 577th Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Taji

Cpl. Billy B. Farris, 20, of Bapchule, Arizona, died December 3 in Taji, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while conducting escort operations. Farris was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Sgt. Keith E. Fiscus, 26, of Townsend, Del., died December 2 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Fiscus was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Two MN Guard Members Killed in IED Attack

Two members of the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry, Crookston, Minnesota died December 2 in Fallujah, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during security operations.  A third soldier, also a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard, was severely injured in the attack.  Killed were:

Spc. Bryan T. McDonough, 22, of Maplewood, Minnesota.

Spc. Corey J. Rystad, 20, of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota.
