Afghanistan
IED Blast Claims Three Soldiers
Three members of the
3rd Brigade Combat Team died
of injuries suffered when an IED detonated near their
vehicle October 31 in Wygal Valley, Afghanistan. The
Soldiers were traveling in a convoy when they were
attacked. One other Soldier was seriously wounded in the
attack. The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, also known as the
Spartan Brigade, deployed to Afghanistan in February
2006. The unit's 3,500 members have conducted full
spectrum operations on Afghanistan's eastern border with
Pakistan.
Killed
were:
Two members of the
1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade
Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New
York. They were:

Pfc. Alex Oceguera, 19,
of San Bernardino, California
was an infantryman assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion,
32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th
Mountain Division (LI). He
enlisted in the Army
in June 2005 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, to be
an infantryman. His awards and decorations include the
Army Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and
the Combat Infantryman Badge. Oceguera is survived by

Maj. Douglas E. Sloan,
40, of Evans Mills, New York, was an infantry officer
assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry
Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain
Division (LI). He had previously served in Iraq. Sloan
was commissioned into the Army in June 1996 after
graduating from Western Michigan University in
Kalamazoo. He completed several assignments before
being assigned to 1-32 Infantry, in 2004, as the
assistant operations officer and company commander.
Prior to becoming a commissioned officer, Sloan served
with the 2nd Armored Division as a mortarman following
basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning,
Georgia, in 1987. In 1989 he left active duty and served
with the 38th Infantry Division, an Army National Guard
unit. His many awards and decorations include the Army
Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National
Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal,
Expert Infantryman Badge, and Senior Parachutist Badge -
to name a few. Sloan is survived by his wife and four

Also killed in the
attack was:

Sgt. Charles J. McClain,
26, of Fort Riley, Kansas. He later died in
Asadabad, Afghanistan. McClain was a combat
engineer assigned to the 3rd Special Troops
Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th
Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.
Originally from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Mcclain
joined the Army in January 2001 and competed
basic and advanced individual training at Fort
Leonard Wood, Missouri. In February 2002 he was
assigned to the 70th Engineer Battalion, based
at Fort Riley, Kansas. There he served in combat
engineering positions and as a track vehicle
driver. Mcclain was reassigned to Fort
Drum in October 2004 and joined the newly
created 3rd Brigade Combat Team. His awards and
decorations include the Army Commendation Medal,
Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal,
National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan
Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service
Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action
Badge. McClain is survived by a son and his

Marine Dies from a Non-Hostile Incident
Pfc. Jason Franco, 18,
of Corona, California, died October 31 from a
non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Franco
was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 11,
Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing,
Miramar, California.

Blast Kills Soldier in Hit

Sgt. Michael R. Weidemann,
23, of Newport, Rhode Island, died October 31 in Hit,
Iraq, from injuries suffered when an improvised
explosive device detonated near his Light Medium
Tactical Vehicle. Weidemann was assigned to the 1st
Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st
Armored Division, Giessen, Germany. |

Sgt. Michael T. Seeley,
27, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, died October
30 in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries suffered when an
improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.
Seeley was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry
Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry
Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Sgt. Kenneth E. Bostic,
21, of Hawthorne, Nevada, died October 30 in Baghdad,

1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 1st

Four Marines died

Enemy Action Claims Sailor in Al Anbar Province
Petty Officer 2nd Class Charles V.
Komppa, 35, of Belgrade, Montana, died
October 25 from enemy action while conducting combat
operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Komppa was
serving with the 3rd Naval Construction Regiment,
Multi-National Corps - Iraq, and was assigned to Naval
Mobile Construction Battalion 18, Detachment 0618 in
Billings, Montana. |

Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

1st Lt. Amos C. R. Bock,
24, of New Madrid, Missouri, died on October 23 in

explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Bock was
assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery
Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne
Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Sailor Killed in Al Anbar Province
Seaman Charles O. Sare,
23, of Hemet, California, died October 23 from enemy
action while conducting combat operations in the Al
Anbar Province, Iraq. Sare, a Hospital Corpsman, was
assigned to Naval Ambulatory Care Center, Port Hueneme,
California and was currently serving with Multi-National
Corps - Iraq. |

IED Blasts Claim Four Soldiers in Baghdad
Four soldiers died
October 22 from IED blasts in Baghdad. Two of the
four soldier killed were members of the 1st Battalion,
22nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th
Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas October 22 in
Baghdad of injuries suffered when their patrol came in
contact with enemy forces. They were:

Army Spc. Nathaniel A. Aguirre,

device detonated near his vehicle. Taylor is assigned to
the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade
Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Spc. Nicholas K. Rogers,
27, of Deltona, Florida, died October 22 in Baghdad,
Iraq, from injuries suffered when his patrol came in
contact with enemy forces during combat operations.
Rogers was a health care specialist assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry
Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain
Division, Fort Drum, New York.
He enlisted in the Army in February 2005 and completed
basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Later, Rogers
completed advanced individual training to become a
combat medic at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In October
2005, he was assigned to Fort Drum and deployed with his
unit to Iraq in August 2006. Rogers was posthumously
awarded the and Good Conduct Medal. His other awards and
decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, National
Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War
on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the
Combat Medical Badge. Rogers is survived by his wife,

2nd Lt. Joshua L. Booth,
23, of Fiskdale, Massachusetts, died October 17 while
conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al
Anbar Province, Iraq. Booth was a platoon commander assigned to 2nd
Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Kaneohe
Bay, Hawaii. He joined the Marine Corps February
2005 and reported to Hawaii April 2006. He deployed to
Iraq September 2006. His awards include the Purple
Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign
Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. |

Staff Sgt. Garth D. Sizemore,
31, of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, died October 17 in
Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries suffered when his
patrol came in contact with enemy forces using small
arms fire during combat operations. Sizemore was
assigned to 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment,
2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division,
Schweinfurt, Germany.
Soldier Dies of Injuries from Vehicle Incident
Spc. Daniel W. Winegeart,
23, of Kountze, Texas, died October 17 in Baghdad, Iraq,
from injuries sustained when his Light Medium Tactical
Vehicle drove off an overpass. Winegeart was assigned to
the 5th Group Support Battalion, 5th Special Forces
Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Three Soldiers Killed by IED in Baqubah

Three members of the
1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade
Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson,
Colorado died October 17 in Baqubah, Iraq, of injuries
suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated
near their vehicle. Killed were:

Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two members of the
2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th
Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii died
October 15 of injuries suffered when an improvised
explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Kirkuk,
Iraq, during combat operations. Killed were:


1st Lt. Joshua Deese,
25, of North Carolina. He died in Balad, Iraq, following
the incident.

Land Mines Claim Two Soldiers in Samarra

Two members of the

28, of San Francisco, died October 14 in Baghdad, Iraq,
of a non-combat related injury. Moore was an infantryman
assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade
Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New
York. Moore enlisted in the Army in February 2006 and
completed basic and advanced individual training
at Fort Benning, Georgia. In July 2006, he was
assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort
Drum, and deployed with his unit to Iraq in
August 2006. Moore is survived by his parents,
also from San Francisco. |

Suicide Bomber Kills Soldier in Kandahar

Spc. Jason A. Lucas,
24, of Columbus, Ohio, died on October 13 in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when his vehicle
was struck by a suicide bomber using a vehicle-born
improvised explosive device. Another soldier was wounded
in the attack. Lucas was an infantryman assigned to
the 2nd
Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat
Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort
Polk, Louisiana. Lucas enlisted into the Army in May
2004 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, to be an
infantryman. Following basic and advanced
individual training, he was assigned to the 2nd Armored
Cavalry Regiment, then based at Fort Polk. In November
2004, he was reassigned to the newly created 4th BCT.
His awards and decorations include the National Defense
Service Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
Lucas is survived by his wife, two children and his
parents. |

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Private 1st Class Thomas J.
Hewitt, 22, of Temple, Texas, died on October
13 at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington,
D.C., from injuries sustained during a September 26
incident in Baghdad, Iraq, during which an improvised
explosive device detonated near his vehicle.
Three other Soldiers were injured
in the attack suffered non-life threatening
injuries.
Hewitt was
a cavalry scout
assigned to the 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd
Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light
Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.
Hewett enlisted in the Army in
July 2005 and completed basic and advanced
individual training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. In
January 2006, he was assigned to the 2nd Brigade
Combat Team and deployed with his unit to Iraq
in August 2006. Hewett's awards and decorations
include the Purple Heart, National Defense
Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the
Combat Action Badge. |

2nd Lt. Johnny K. Craver,
37, of McKinney, Texas, died October 13 in Baghdad,
Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive
device detonated near his vehicle during combat
operations. Craver was a Ranger assigned to the 1st Battalion,
22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry
Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He had been in Iraq
since midsummer and was expected home by Christmas.
Craver is survived by his wife and their three children,

Spec. Timothy A. Fulkerson,
20, of Utica, Kentucky, who died October 8 in Tikrit,
Iraq, when a landmine detonated near his vehicle during
combat operations. Fulkerson was assigned to the 1st
Battalion, 82nd Aviation Reconnaissance Battalion, 82nd
Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort
Bragg, North Carolina.

Spc. Fernando D. Robinson,
21, of Hawthorne, California, died on October 2
in Korengal, Afghanistan, from injuries
sustained when his patrol came under attack by
enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket
propelled grenades. Robinson, an
infantryman, entered the Army in February 2004
and completed basic and advanced individual
training at Fort Benning, Georgia, to be an
infantryman. In July 2004, he was assigned to
the 3rd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Drum and
deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in early
2006. Robinson's awards and decorations include
the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense
Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal,
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army
Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
He
was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple
Heart, and promoted to the rank of Corporal. Robinson is survived by his mother and his

Spc. Angelo J. Vaccaro,
23, of Deltona, Florida, died on October 2 in Korengal,
Afghanistan, from injuries suffered during combat
operations. His unit encountered enemy forces as
they were responding to recover casualties from
a firefight earlier that day. Vaccaro was a
healthcare specialist who deployed with his unit
in early 2006 to participate in Operation
Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Vaccaro
enlisted in the Army in March 2004 and completed
basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Following advanced individual training at Fort
Sam Houston, Texas, he was assigned to Fort Drum
in October 2004. His awards and decorations
include the Purple Heart, Army Achievement
Medal, National Defense Service Medal,
Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Overseas Service
Ribbon and the Combat Medical Badge. Vaccaro is
survived by his wife and parents, all of
