Soldier Killed in Vehicle Roll-Over

Spc. Robert F. Weber, 22, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died near the Qayyarah West Airfield, Iraq, (about 30 miles south of Mosul, Iraq) as a result of a vehicle roll-over on September 30. Weber was assigned to 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


IED Blast Killed Soldier in Hit

Cpl. Luis E. Tejeda, 20, of Huntington Park, California, died September 30 in Al Asad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations in Hit, Iraq. Tejeda was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Two Iowa Guard Members Killed in Al Asad

Two members of the National Guard's 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry, Iowa Falls, Iowa died in Al Asad, Iraq, on September 30 of injuries suffered when their vehicle received small arms fire during security operations. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Scott E. Nisely, 48, of Marshalltown, Iowa. Nisely graduated from Syracuse (Nebraska) High School in 1976. He enlisted as an infantryman in Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry in July 2002. Nisely mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom with the unit in September 2005 and arrived in Iraq in early May 2006. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Spc. Kampha B. Sourivong, 20, of Iowa City, Iowa. Sourivong graduated from Iowa City West High School in 2004. He enlisted as an infantryman in Company B, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry in February 2004, and mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom with Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry in September 2005 and arrived in Iraq in early May 2006.  Sourivong is survived by his father and mother, a sister and a brother.

Nisely and Sourivong were part of a forward security element providing convoy security west of Baghdad, when insurgent forces attacked with small arms fire. The attack occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m., local Iraq time.

Spc. James Migues, Jr. was injured in the attack and was evacuated by air ambulance to the U.S. Army medical facility in Taqaddum, Iraq. He was later transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, and it is anticipated that he will eventually be transported to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for additional medical care.  (Source: IA-ARNG)

Pfc. Christopher T. Blaney, 19, of Winter Park, Florida, died in Taji, Iraq, from a non-combat related incident on September 29. Blaney was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Navy Seal Killed in Ar Ramadi

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor, 25, of Garden Grove, California, died September 29 while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Monsoor was a SEAL assigned to a West-Coast based command.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. James Chamroeun, 20, of Union City, Georgia, died September 28 of wounds received while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  Chamroeun was a radio operator assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. Chamroeun joined the Marine Corps in July 2004 and reported to Hawaii in February 2005. He deployed to Iraq in September 2006. Chamroeun deployed to Afghanistan with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment from May 2005 to January 2006. His awards include the Purple Heart Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon.  Source: III MEF web site.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Baghdad

1st Lt. James N. Lyons, 28, of Rochester, New York, died on September 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his mounted patrol came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations. Lyons was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Enemy Action Claims Marine in Al Anbar Province

Pfc. Christopher T. Riviere, 21, of Cooper City, Florida, died September 26 of wounds received while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Riviere was providing security when he received small arms fire. Riviere was a rifleman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. Riviere joined the Marine Corps in September 2005 and reported to Hawaii in March 2006. Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Ar Ramadi

Staff Sgt. Jose A. Lanzarin, 28, of Lubbock, Texas, was killed in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on September 26, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Lanzarin was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.


Two Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Roll-Over

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 26, of injuries suffered when their M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle rolled over while maneuvering. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Edward C. Reynolds, Jr., 27, of Groves, Texas.

Pfc. Henry Paul, 24, of Kolonia Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.

Mellen was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, died in Riyadh, Iraq, on September 23, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations. Killed were:

Pfc. Kenneth E Kincaid, IV, 25, of Lilburn, Georgia.

Sgt. Velton Locklear, III, 29, of Lacey, Washington.


IED Detonates Killing Soldier in Taji

Staff Sgt. Carlos Dominguez, 57, of Savannah, Georgia, died of injuries suffered in Taji, Iraq, on September 23, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Dominguez was assigned to the 414th Civil Affairs Battalion, Utica, New York.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Taji

Spc. Windell J. Simmons, 20, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, died of injuries suffered in Taji, Iraq, on September 23, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Simmons was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Bevington was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Fighting Claims Two Marines in Al Anbar Province

Two Marines died September 20 while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Killed were:

Sgt. Christopher M. Zimmerman, 28, of Stephenville, Texas, assigned to 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Cpl. Yull Estrada Rodriguez, 21, of Alegre Lajas, Puerto Rico, was a machine gunner assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  He joined the Marine Corps February 2004 and reported to Hawaii July 2004. He deployed to Iraq March 2006.  His awards include the Purple Heart, two Combat Action Ribbons, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and two Sea Service Deployment ribbons.  Estrada Rodriguez is survived by his mother and father.

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Pvt. Eric M. Kavanagh, 20, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, died of injuries suffered in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 20, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Kavanagh was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

KY Guard Member Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Sgt. 1st Class Charles J. Jones, 29, of Lawrenceburg, Kansas, died from a non-combat related incident on September 20, Jones was assigned to the National Guard's 149th Brigade Combat Team, Louisville, Kentucky.

IED Claims MP in Mosul

1st Lt. Ashley L. (Henderson) Huff, 23, of Belle Mead, New Jersey, died of injuries suffered in Mosul, Iraq, on September 19, when a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near her mounted patrol during combat operations. Huff was assigned to the 549th Military Police Company, 385th Military Police Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Soldier Killed in Vehicle Roll Over  

Cpl. Bobby T. Callahan, 22, of Jamestown, North Carolina, died on September 19, in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his HMMWV rolled over while maneuvering. Callahan was an infantryman assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  Callahan enlisted in the Army in April 2003 and in August 2003, he was assigned to Fort Drum and the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. Callahan deployed to the African nation of Djibouti from August to November 2003 where he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom alongside the other members of 4-31 Infantry. Callahan deployed with his fellow Polar Bears from 4-31 Infantry in August 2006. The Commando Brigade recently began its second one-year deployment to Iraq, having redeployed from Baghdad in July 2005 following the unit's first tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His awards and decorations include Army Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation with combat distinguishing device "V", Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.  Callahan is survived by his wife, mother, father, and sister.  Source: 10th Mtn. IED Killed Soldier in Balad

Spc. Jared J. Raymond, 20, of Swampscott, Massachusetts, died on September 19, in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M1A2 Abrams Tank during combat operations in Taji, Iraq. Raymond was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Davis was assigned to the Army's 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Sgt. Adam L. Knox, 21, of Columbus, Ohio, died on September 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his patrol encountered enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations. Knox was assigned to the Army Reserve 346th Psychological Operations Company, Columbus, Ohio.

Roddy was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Two in Norfolk, Virginia, and was serving with Multi-National Corps - Iraq.

KS Guard Member Falls to Enemy Fire

Sgt. 1st Class Bernard L. Deghand, 42, of Mayetta, Kansas, died on September 15 in Spira, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when his unit encountered enemy forces using small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire during combat operations. Deghand was assigned to the Army National Guard 35th Division Artillery, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Granados, 21, of Le Grand, California, died of injuries sustained in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 15, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Lance Cpl. Ryan A. Miller, 19, of Pearland, Texas, died September 14 while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  Miller was a rifleman assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  He joined the Marine Corps February 2005 and reported to Hawaii August 2005. He deployed to Iraq March 2006.  Miller was conducting a foot patrol when he was struck by an improvised explosive device. His awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon. Miller is survived by his mother and father.

Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Sgt. David T. Weir, 23, of Cleveland, Tennessee, died on September 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered on September 13 when he encountered enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire during combat operations. Weir was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Sgt. Clint E. Williams, 24, of Kingston, Oklahoma, died on September 14 of injuries suffered in Baghdad, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Williams was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Taji

Spc. Russell M. Makowski, 23, of Union, Missouri, died of injuries suffered in Taji, Iraq, on September 14 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol during combat operations. Makowski was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Three Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Three soldiers died in Baghdad on September 14 of injuries suffered when a car bomb detonated near a western-Baghdad substation.  Killed were:

Two members of the 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. They were:

Army Cpl. Marcus A. Cain, 20, of Crowley, Louisiana.

Army Sgt. Jennifer M. Hartman, 21, of New Ringgold, Pennsylvania.

Also killed in the blast was:

Army Sgt. Aaron A. Smith, 31, of Killeen, Texas, was assigned to 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Small Arms Fire Claims Soldier in Mosul

Capt. Matthew C. Mattingly, 30, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, died on September 13 in Mosul, Iraq, when he encountered enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations. Mattingly was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


IED Claims Soldier in Ar Ramadi

Pfc. Jeffrey P. Shaffer, 21, of Harrison, Arkansas, died of injuries sustained in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on September 13 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle during combat operations. Shaffer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Bamberg, Germany.

IED Blast Claims Platoon Leader in Al Kifl

2nd Lt. Emily J.T. Perez, 23, of Texas, died on September 12 of injuries sustained in Al Kifl, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near her HMMWV during combat operations. Perez was assigned to the 204th Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. A news brief, widely circulated via the Internet, reported that Perez was the first Black woman to serve as corps commander sergeant major at West Point. It also stated that she graduated in the top 10 percent of her class, out-ran many men, directed a gospel choir, and read the Bible every day. As a platoon leader, she reportedly lead a weekly convoy near Najaf, Iraq. Shortly before shipping out to Iraq, she flew cross-country to be a bone marrow donor for a stranger. She was the 64th American servicewoman killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Vehicle Accident Claims Soldier in Asadabad

Sgt. Jeremy E. DePottey, 26, of Ironwood, Michigan, died on September 11 near Asadabad, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when his vehicle rolled over during a unit mounted patrol. DePottey was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. He entered the Army in April 2002 and following basic and advanced individual training, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division's 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.  In August 2005, DePottey was reassigned to Fort Drum to serve with the 1-32 Infantry.  His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge and the Expert Infantryman Badge.  DePottey is survived by his wife and three children.

Andrews, 22, of Weimar, California, died on September 11 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Andrews was assigned to the 54th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade, Warner Barracks, Bamberg, Germany.

Sgt. Nathaniel B. Lindsey, 38, of Troutdale, Oregon, died on September 9 in Shajoy, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his HMMWV came in contact with undetermined ordnance during combat operations. Lindsey was assigned to the Army National Guard's 41st Brigade Combat Team, Portland, Oregon.

Marine Dies from Wounds Received in Combat

Cpl. Johnathan L. Benson, 21, of North Branch, Minnesota, died September 9 from wounds suffered on June 17 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Indirect Enemy Fire Claims MP

Pfc. Anthony P. Seig, 19, of Sunman, Indiana, died on September 9, in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained when he encountered indirect fire from enemy forces while on base. Seig was assigned to the Army's 118th Military Police Company, 519th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from Enemy Fire in Balad

Pfc. Vincent M. Frassetto, 21, of Toms River, New Jersey, died September 7 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Frassetto was assigned to 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Sgt. Luis A. Montes, 22, of El Centro, California, died on September 7 in Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of injuries suffered on September 1 in Abu Ghraib, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Montes was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Incident

Spc. David J. Ramsey, 27, of Tacoma, Washington, was medically evacuated from Iraq on August 24 and died from a non-combat related incident on September 7 in Spanaway, Washington. Ramsey was assigned to the 47th Combat Support Hospital, 62nd Medical Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Soldier Dies from Enemy Fire in Balad

Pfc. Jeremy R. Shank, 18, of Jackson, Missouri, died on September 6 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in Hawijah, Iraq, when he encountered enemy forces using small arms fire during a dismounted security patrol. Shank was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Soldier Dies on Patrol in Ar Ramadi

Sgt. John A. Carroll, 26, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, died on September 6 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries sustained when he came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during a dismounted security patrol. Carroll was assigned to the Army 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Lt. Col. Marshall A. Gutierrez, 41, of New Mexico, died on September 4 in Camp Virginia, Kuwait, from non-combat related injuries. Gutierrez was assigned to the Area Support Group, Arijan, Kuwait.

Fighting Claims Two Reservists in Al Anbar Province

Two Marine Reservists died September 4 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Killed were:

Cpl. Jared M. Shoemaker, 29, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Lance Cpl. Eric P. Valdepenas, 21, of Seekonk, Massachusetts, was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Ayer, Massachusetts.

Soldier Dies from a Non-Combat Related Cause

Pfc. Hannah L. Gunterman, 20, of Redlands, California, died on September 4 in Taji, Iraq, from a non-combat related cause. Gunterman was assigned to the 542nd Maintenance Company, 44th Corps Support Battalion, Fort Lewis, Washington.

NE Guard Member Killed by IED Blast in Balad

Sgt. Germaine L. Debro, 33, of Omaha, Nebraska, died on September 4 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Debro was assigned to the Army National Guard 1st Squadron, 167th Cavalry Regiment, Fremont, Nebraska.

Naval Office Killed in Al Anbar Province

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher G. Walsh, 30, of St. Louis, died September 4 while his unit was conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Anbar Province. Walsh was serving as a medical corpsman with Multinational Corps Iraq. He was assigned to the Navy Reserve 3rd Battalion, 24th Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Bridgetown, Missouri.

Fighting Claims Two Marines in Al Anbar Province

Three Marines died September 3 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Two of the Marines were members of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. They were:

 

Pvt. Ryan E. Miller, 21, of Gahanna, Ohio.

Lance Cpl. Philip A. Johnson, 19, of Hartford, Connecticut.

Also killed was:

Lance Cpl. Shane P. Harris, 23, of Las Vegas, New Mexico, was assigned to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Baqubah

Pfc. Nicholas A. Madaras, 19, of Wilton, Connecticut, died on September 3, in Baqubah, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol during combat operations. Madaras was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast

Sgt. 1st Class Richard J. Henkes II, 32, of Portland Oregon, died on September 3 of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Henkes was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received Aug. 30th

Staff Sgt. Eugene H.E. Alex, 32, of Bay City, Michigan, died on September 2 in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries suffered on August 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, when he encountered enemy forces using small arms fire. Alex was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


Two Soldier Killed in Mortar Attack

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died in Yusifiyah, Iraq, on September 2 of injuries suffered from mortar fire during dismounted combat operations. 

Killed were:

Pfc. Justin W. Dreese, 21, of Northumberland, Pennsylvania.

Sgt. Ralph N. Porras, 36, of Merrill, Michigan.


Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Baghdad

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Wurzburg, Germany died on September 3 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations. Killed were:

Pvt. Edwin A. Andino II, 23, of Culpeper, Virginia.

Sgt. Jason L. Merrill, 22, of Mesa, Arizona.

Lance Cpl. Cliff K. Golla, 21, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died September 1 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Golla was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Staff Sgt. Angel D. Mercado-Velazquez, 24, died in Yusifiyah, Iraq, on September 1 of injuries suffered from mortar fire during dismounted combat operations. Mercado-Velazquez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
