Two members of the 4th Infantry were killed in separate incidents on June 29.

IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Christopher D. Rose, 21, of San Francisco, California, died on June 29 of injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq.  Rose was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in Enemy Attack

Sgt. James P. Muldoon, 23, of Bells, Texas, died on June 29 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries sustained earlier that day in Baquba, Iraq.  Muldoon was shot while manning a control point during combat operations.  Muldoon was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Combined Arms Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Cpl. Ryan. J. Clark, 19, of Lancaster, California, died on June 29 in the Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of injuries sustained on June 17 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations in Ar Ramadi, Iraq.  Clark was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Baumholder, Germany.


Soldier Shot to Death While Patrolling Mosul

Sgt. Bryan C. Luckey, 25, of Tampa, Florida, died on June 29, in Mosul, Iraq, when he was shot by enemy forces while on mounted patrol.  Luckey was assigned to the 562nd Engineer Company, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

MN Guard Member Killed by IED Blast in Mosul

Spc. Kyle R. Miller, 19, of Willmar, Minnesota, died on June 29 in Mosul, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy.  Miller was assigned to the Army National Guard's Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery Regiment, New Ulm, Minnesota.

Soldier Dies When Truck Hits Mine in Afghanistan

Cpl. Aaron M. Griner, 24, of Tampa, Florida, died in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on June 28, of injuries sustained when his vehicle struck a mine during combat operations.  Griner was assigned to a health care specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  He entered the Army in February 2004 and completed basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After advanced individual training to be a combat medic at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, he was assigned to Fort Drum in September 2004.  Griner's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 'V' Device, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Medic Badge.  Griner is survived by his wife, his son, his mother and father, and a sister.

Pfc. Rex A. Page, 21, of Kirksville, Missouri, died June 28 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  Page was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Cpl. Jason W. Morrow, 27, of Riverside, California, died June 27 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, on June 26.  Morrow was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

IED Claims Soldier in Taji

Sgt. 1st Class Terry O.P. Wallace, 33, of Winnsboro, Louisiana, died on June 27, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations in Taji, Iraq.  Wallace was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


IED Kills Soldier in Baghdad

Cpl. Jeremy S. Jones, 25, of Omaha, Nebraska, died on June 27 of injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device during dismounted combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq.  Jones was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Marine Killed Fighting in Al Anbar Province

Staff Sgt. Raymond J. Plouhar, 30, of Lake Orion, Michigan died June 26 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Plouhar was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Falls to Enemy Action in Ar Ramadi

Sgt. Terry M. Lisk, 26, of Fox Lake, Illinois, died on June 26 of injuries sustained in Ar Ramadi, Iraq when his unit received indirect fire from enemy forces during combat operations.  Lisk was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Al Asad

Pfc. Michael J. Potocki, 21, of Baltimore, Maryland, died on June 26, of injuries sustained in Al Asad, Iraq, when his unit came in contact with enemy force's small arms fire during combat operations.  Potocki was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier on Patrol

Pfc. Justin R. Davis, 19, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, died in Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan (near Kunar Province), on June 25, when he came in contact with indirect fire while on patrol during combat operations.  Davis was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.   He entered the Army in June 2005 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia to be an infantryman.  He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32d Infantry Regiment in December 2005 and deployed with that unit to Afghanistan in February 2006.  Davis' awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Afghan Campaign Medal. Davis is survived by his father and his mother.

Reservist Killed in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. Paul N. King, 23, of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts died June 25 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  King was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Ayer, Massachusetts.

Soldier Killed during Search Mission

Master Sgt. Thomas D. Maholic, 38, of Bradford, Pennsylvania, died on June 24 in Ghecko, Afghanistan, when his patrol unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during a cordon and search mission.  Maholic was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

FL Guard Member Killed in Enemy Attack

Staff Sgt. Joseph F. Fuerst, III, 26 of Tampa Florida, died in Panjway District, Afghanistan, on June 24, when his HMMWV came in contact with enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire during combat operations.  Fuerst was assigned to the Army National Guard's 53rd Infantry Brigade, Pinellas Park Florida.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received from IED Blast

Staff Sgt. Virrueta A. Sanchez, 33, of Houston, Texas, died in Balad, Iraq on June 24 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Sanchez was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Two Soldiers Killed by Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 10th Calvary Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died on June 24 in the vicinity of Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained when they encountered enemy forces small arms fire, and an improvised explosive device which detonated during a dismounted patrol.  Killed were:

Sgt. Benjamin J. Laymon, 22, of Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Sgt. Justin D. Norton, 21, of Rainier, Washington.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED Near Baghdad

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky died on June 23 in the vicinity of Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations.

Killed were:

Pfc. Paul A. Beyer, 21, of Jamestown, North Dakota.

Staff Sgt. Mario J. Bievre, 34, of Constantinople, Illinois.


IED Blast Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Cpl Ryan J. Buckley, 21, of Nokomis, Illinois, died in Baghdad, Iraq on June 23 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Buckley was assigned to the Army's 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Pfc. Devon J. Gibbons, 19, of Port Orchard, Washington, died on June 23, in the Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of injuries sustained on April 11 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Bradley Fighting Vehicle during combat operations in Taji, Iraq.  Gibbons was assigned to the 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

GA Guard Member Dies from Non-Combat Related Cause

Spc. Channing G. Singletary, 30, of Sylvester, Georgia, died in Baghdad, Iraq on June 23, from a non-combat-related cause.  Singletary was assigned to the Army National Guard's 122nd Support Center, Savannah, Georgia.

Cpl. Riley E. Baker, 22, of Pacific, Missouri, died June 22 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.   Baker was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Two Soldiers Killed in Enemy Attack

Two members of the 3rd Squadron, 71st Calvary, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York died in Gowardesh, Afghanistan, on June 21, when they encountered enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades during combat operations. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Patrick L. Lybert, 28, of Ladysmith, Wisconsin.  Lybert was an infantryman assigned to he 3rd Squadron, 71st Calvary, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  He entered the Army August 1, 2002, and arrived at Fort Drum August 5, 2003. He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in February 2006. Lybert's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, and more.  Lybert is survived by his mother and father, his brother and sister-in-law.

Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti, 30, of Raynham, Massachusetts.  Monti was a fire support specialist with the 3rd Squadron, 71st Calvary, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  He entered the Army Nov. 5, 1994, and arrived at Fort Drum March, 31, 2003. Monti deployed to Afghanistan with his unit in February 2006.   His many awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal with 4th Oak Leaf Cluster, to name a few.  Monti is survived by his parents, a sister and a brother.


Soldier Killed by Enemy Forces Near Naray

Pfc. Brian J. Bradbury, 22, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, died in the vicinity of Naray, Afghanistan, on June 21, when he encountered enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades during combat operations.  Bradbury was a fire support specialist assigned to the 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York. He entered the Army July 22, 2005, and arrived at Fort Drum November 22, 2005. He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in February 2006.  Bradbury's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.  Bradbury is survived by his wife, and two daughters, his mother, and his father.


Helicopter Pilot Killed in Crash During Evacuation 

Staff Sgt. Heathe N. Craig, 28, of Severn, Maryland, died June 21 in the vicinity of Naray, Afghanistan when his UH-60 helicopter hoist malfunctioned while attempting to evacuate Pfc. Bradbury during combat operations.  Craig was assigned to the 159th Air Ambulance Medical Company, Wiesbaden, Germany.

Marine Falls to Enemy Action in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. Nicholas J. Whyte, 21, of Brooklyn, New York, died June 21 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Whyte was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Blast in Baghdad Claims Soldier

Sgt. Jason J. Buzzard, 31, of Constantinople, Calif., died in Baghdad, Iraq, on June 21 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HEMTT cargo truck during combat operations.  Buzzard was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Cause

Sgt. Sirlou C. Cuaresma, 25, of Chicago, Illinois, died in Baghdad, Iraq on June 21, from a non-combat related cause.  Cuaresma was assigned to the 68th Engineer Company, 62nd Engineer Battalion, 13th Containment Command (Expeditionary), Fort Hood, Texas.

Four Marines died June 20 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Killed were:

IED Claims Two Soldiers in Afghanistan

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York died in Pech River Valley, Afghanistan, on June 16, when their all terrain vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during combat operations. Killed were:

1st Lt. Forrest P. Ewens, 25, of Washington state,  was an infantry officer assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI). He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army in May of 2004 after graduating from Gonzaga University; and assigned to the 10th Mountain Division (LI) in September 2005.  His military education includes the Basic Airborne Course, Ranger School, Combat Lifesaver Course and Basic Military Mountaineering Course.  His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge and the Ranger Tab. Ewens is survived by his wife, 1st Lt. Megan R. Ewens, also assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team; his mother and stepfather.

Sgt. Ian T. Sanchez, 26, of Staten Island, New York was a combat engineer assigned to Company A, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI). He entered the Army in March 2002 and trained to be a combat engineer. After complete assignments in 2002 and 2003, in March 2005, Sanchez was assigned to the newly created 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division (LI).  His military education included the Combat Lifesaver Course and the Warrior Leader Course.  Included among his many awards and decorations are the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Sanchez is survived by his wife and two children.

IED Claims Soldier in Ad Diwaniyah

Spc. Brent W. Koch, 22, of Morton, Minnesota, died on June 16, in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  Koch was assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry Combined Arms Battalion, Hutchinson, Minnesota.


Three Soldiers Killed in Attack on Checkpoint

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky were killed on June 16 when they came under enemy small-arms fire while manning a checkpoint during combat operations. One of the soldiers, Babineau, was killed at the checkpoint, while the other two, Menchaca and Tucker were abducted, tortured and then killed near Baghdad, Iraq on or about June 16. The soldiers  Killed were:

Pfc. Kristian Menchaca, 23, of San Marcos, Texas.

Capt. Patrick D. Damon, 41, of Falmouth, Maine, died in Bagram, Afghanistan, on June 15, from a non-combat related cause.  Damon was assigned to the Army National Guard's 240th Engineer Group, Augusta, Maine.

Santos, 21, of Minot, North Dakota, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on June 15 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Santos was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

WY Guard Member Dies from Non-Combat Related Cause

Lt. Col. Charles E. Munier, 50, of Wheatland, Wyoming, died on June 12 at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., from a non-combat related cause, which occurred on June 5 in Kabul, Afghanistan. Munier was assigned to the Wyoming Army National Guard's training site in Guernsey, Wyoming.

Soldier Killed in Combat

Sgt. Roger P. Peña, Jr., 29, of San Antonio died in Musa Qulah, Afghanistan, on June 14, when his convoy came under enemy small arms fire during combat operations.  Pena was a health care specialist assigned to the 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  Peña entered the Army in March 2004 and completed basic combat training trained at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He further trained at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to be a combat medic.  Upon completion of basic and advanced individual training, Peña was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division in November 2004.  Peña deployed with his unit in February 2006.  His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.  Peña is survived by his wife and two children.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. Michael A. Estrella, 20, of Hemet, California, died June 14 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  He was conducting a foot patrol when he was attacked by small arms fire.  Estrella was a field radio operator with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He joined the Marine Corps in September 2003 and reported to Hawaii in May 2004. Estrella was deployed to Afghanistan with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment from November 2004 to June 2005. He was then deployed to Iraq in March 2006.  His awards include the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon. Estrella is survived by his mother and father.

Cpl. Bernard P. Corpuz, 28, of Watsonville, California, died in Ghanzi, Afghanistan, on June 11, from wounds sustained when his convoy came under enemy small arms fire and an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations.  Corpuz was assigned to the 303rd Military Intelligence Battalion, 504th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

Marine Dies of Combat Injuries

Lance Cpl. Salvador Guerrero, 21, of Los Angeles, California, died June 9, of wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Guerrero was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

IED Claims Reservist in Kirkuk

Sgt. Jose M. Velez, 35, of Bronx, New York, died in Kirkuk, Iraq, on June 9, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Velez was assigned to the Army Reserve 773rd Transportation Company, Fort Totten, New York.


IED Kills Reservist in Ad Diwaniyah

Pvt. Benjamin J. Slaven, 22, of Plymouth, Nebraska, died on June 9, in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Slaven was assigned to the Army Reserve 308th Transportation Company, Lincoln, Nebraska.

IED Claims OH Guard Member in IED

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel B. Crabtree, 31, of Canton, Ohio, died June 9 in Al Kut, Iraq, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  He was evacuated by air after the attack, but  died en route to a combat support hospital in Baghdad.  An Iraqi interpreter traveling in his vehicle also died following the attack. Crabtree, a Special Forces weapons sergeant, was assigned to the Ohio Army National Guard’s Company B, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Columbus, Ohio. He was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and attached to the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Arabian Peninsula.  After initially entering military service with the Army Reserve in 1992, Crabtree joined the Army National Guard in 1993 as an administrative specialist. He later retrained as a military policeman and served with the 135th Military Police Company in Brook Park, Ohio. He joined the 19th SFG in March 2002, and in 2003 he was selected to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and graduated in 2004.  In civilian life, Crabtree worked as a police officer first in his native Hartville prior to serving with the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department as a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics, or SWAT, unit. Crabtree is survived by his wife, daughter, and also his father and his mother.

Land Mine Claims Seaman

Seaman Apprentice Zachary M. Alday, 22, of Donalsonville, Georgia, died June 9 from injuries sustained earlier in the day when the vehicle in which he was riding struck a land mine.  His unit was conducting combat operations against enemy forces in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq.  Alday was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 7th Regimental Combat Team, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), Camp Pendleton, California.

IED Claims Soldier in Buritz

Spc. Luis D. Santos, 20, of Rialto, California, died in Buritz, Iraq, on June 8, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Santos was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Sgt. 1st Class Clarence D. McSwain, 31, of Meridian, Mississippi, died in Baghdad, Iraq on June 8, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle during combat operations.  McSwain was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Ar Ramadi

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, Baumholder, Germany died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on June 7, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations. Killed were:

Pfc. David N. Crombie, 19, of Winnemucca, Nevada.

1st Lt. Scott M. Love, 32, of Knoxville, Tennessee.


Soldier Killed by Small Arms Fire in Mosul

2nd Lt. John S. Vaughan, 23, of Edwards, Colorado, died in Mosul, Iraq, on June 7, when he encountered enemy small arms fire during a dismounted combat operations. Vaughan was assigned to the Army's 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Marine Dies in Combat in Al Anbar Province

Sgt. Mark T. Smykowski, 23, of Mentor, Ohio, died June 6 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Smykowski was assigned to 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Claims Two Soldiers in Baghdad

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died in Baghdad, Iraq, on June 6, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their M1A2 tank during combat operations.  Killed were:

Sgt. Daniel R. Gionet, 23, of Pelham, New Hampshire.

1st Lt. Ryan T. Sanders, 27, of College Station, Texas.

Small Arms Fire Claims IN Guard Member

Staff Sgt. Richard A. Blakley, 34, of Plainfield, Indiana, died in Al Khalidiyah, Iraq, on June 6, when he was shot by enemy small arms fire during dismounted combat patrol operations. Blakley was assigned to the National Guard's 38th Main Support Battalion, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Cause

Cpl. Derek A. Stanley, 20, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, died in Salerno, Afghanistan, on June 5, from a non-combat related cause.  Stanley was a chemical operations specialist assigned to the 710th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.  He enlisted in the Army in March 2003 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  Stanley was assigned to Fort Drum in August 2004 and served as a decontamination specialist. He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in February 2006. His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. The cause of death is under investigation, but is not suspected to have been caused by enemy action or foul play.

Two ND Guard Members Killed by Anti-Tank Mines

Two members of the National Guard's, 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery, Grand Forks, North Dakota. died in Khogyani, Afghanistan, on June 6, when their HMWWV struck two anti-tank mines during combat operations. Killed were:

 

Spc. Curtis R. Mehrer, 21, of Bismarck, North Dakota.

Sgt. Travis A. Vanzoest, 21, of Larimore, North Dakota.

Marine Dies from a Non-Hostile Incident

Maj. Michael D. Stover, 43, of Mansfield, Ohio, died June 3 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Stover was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron-371, Marine Wing Support Group-37, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona.

CA Guard Member Killed by IED in Baghdad

Spc. Issac S. Lawson, 35, of Sacramento, California, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on June 5, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Lawson was assigned to the National Guard's 49th Military Police Brigade, Fairfield, California.

Two Sailors Killed by IED in Al Anbar Province

Two members of the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 25, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, died June 5 as a result of enemy action when their HMMWV was struck by an improvised explosive device in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Killed were:

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jaime S. Jaenke, 29, of Bay City, Wisconsin.

Petty Officer 1st Class Gary T. Rovinski, 44, of Roseville, Illinois.

Cpl. Ryan J. Cummings, 22, of Streamwood, Illinois, died June 3, from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Pfc. Brett L. Tribble, 20, of Lake Jackson, Texas, died in Ar Ramadi on June 3 of injuries sustained in Ar Ramadi, Iraq on June 2, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Tribble was assigned to the Army's 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Baumholder, Germany.


 U.S. ARMY RESERVES

Reservist Dies from Non-Combat Related Cause

Staff Sgt. Darren Harmon, 44, of Newark Delaware, died in Haditha, Iraq, on June 3, from a non-combat related cause.  Harmon was assigned to the Army Reserves 203rd Military Intelligence Battalion, 205th Military Intelligence Brigade, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
