Three Marines Fall to Enemy Fire in Al Anbar Province

Three Marines died April 28 while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  All were members of the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. Killed were:

Two members of the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.  They were:

Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy, 25, of Cochranville, Pennsylvania.

Sgt. Lea R. Mills, 21, of Brooksville, Florida.

Also killed was:

Sgt. Edward G. Davis III, 31, of Antioch, Illinois,  Davis was assigned to 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Two Soldiers Killed in IED Blast

Two members of the 10th Cavalry, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died in Baghdad, Iraq, on April 28, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations. Killed were:

Sgt. Jose Gomez, 23, of Corona, New York.

Staff Sgt. Bryant A. Herlem, 37, of Copperas Cove, Texas.

IED Blast Kills Soldier in Baghdad

1st Sgt. Bobby Mendez, 38, of Brooklyn, New York, died of injuries sustained in Baghdad, Iraq, on April 27, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Mendez was assigned to the 2nd Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Cause

Staff Sgt. Mark A. Wall, 27, of Alden, Iowa, died in Mosul, Iraq, on April 27, from a non-combat related cause.  Wall was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

After Long Fight, Soldier Dies from IED Injuries

Sgt. Matthew A. Webber, 23, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, died on April 27, in the Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations in Habbaniyah, Iraq, on November 21, 2005.  Webber was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), Saginaw, Michigan.  Webber is survived by his father and his mother, his step-father, one brother and one sister.

Lance Cpl. Michael L. Ford, 19, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, died April 26 while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  Ford was assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Sgt. 1st Class Richard J. Herrema, 27, of Jackson, Tennessee, died in Baghdad, Iraq on April 25, when he came under enemy fire during combat operations.  Herrema was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


IED Claims Soldier in Mosul

Pfc. Raymond L. Henry, 21, of Anaheim, California, died on April 25 in Mosul, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Henry was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Lance Cpl. Aaron W. Simons, 20, of Modesto, California, died April 24 while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  Simons was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Staff Sgt. Metodio A. Bandonill, 29, of Honolulu, Hawaii, died in Baghdad, Iraq on April 24, from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Bandonill was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Three members of the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died of injuries sustained in Taji, Iraq, on April 23, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations. Killed were:

Enemy Action Claims Marine in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. Eric R. Lueken, 23, of Dubois, Indiana, died April 22 while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Lueken was a field radio operator with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Lueken joined the Marine Corps October 2003 and reported to Hawaii May 2004. He deployed to Iraq March 2006. He also deployed to Afghanistan with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment from November 2004 to June 2005. His awards include the Purple Heart, two Combat Action Ribbons, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and more. Lueken is survived by his parents and brother.

Four Soldiers Killed by IED Blast in Baghdad

Four members of the 1st Squadron, 67th Armored Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died of injuries sustained in Baghad, Iraq on April 22, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV causing a fire.  Killed were:

Pfc.  Jacob H. Allcott, 21, of Caldwell, Idaho.

Pvt.  Michael E. Bouthot, 19, of Fall River, Massachusetts.

Sgt. Kyle A. Colnot, 23, of Arcadia, California.

Spc. Eric D. King, 29, of Vancouver, Washington.


IED Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Pvt. Travis C. Zimmerman, 19, of New Berlinville, Pennsylvania, died in Baghdad, Iraq on April 22, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his observation post during dismounted combat reconnaissance operations.  Zimmerman was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

KY Guard Member Killed in Afghanistan

Capt. Clayton L. Adamkavicius, 43, of Fairdale, Kentucky, died of injuries sustained in Abu Ghurayb, Afghanistan, on April 21, when he came under enemy small arms fire during combat operations.  Adamkavicius was assigned to the Army National Guard's 149th Brigade, 35th Infantry Division, Louisville, Kentucky.

Pfc. Robert J. Settle, 25, of Owensboro, Kentucky, died in Taji, Iraq, on April 19, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Settle was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Pfc. Patrick A. Tinnell, 25, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, died in As Siniyah, Iraq, on April 19, when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated during a dismounted combat patrol.  Tinnell was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Capt. Ian P. Weikel, 31, of Colorado, died in Balad, Iraq on April 18, from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations in Baghdad.  Weikel was assigned to the 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Master Sgt. Clinton W. Cubert, 38, of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, died on April 16, in the Lexington Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lexington, Kentucky, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations in Samarra, Iraq, on September 11, 2005.  Cubert was assigned to the Army National Guard's 2113th Transportation Company, Paducah, Kentucky.

Four Marines Killed by IED in Al Anbar Province

Four Marines died April 15 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq when their HMMWV struck an improvised explosive device during combat operations.  Killed were:

Three members of Cothran, Mayorga, and Winslow were all assigned to the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  They were:

Lance Cpl. Derrick J. Cothran, 21, of Avondale, Louisiana.

Cpl. Pablo V. Mayorga, 33, of Margate, Florida.

Pfc. Ryan G. Winslow, 19, of Jefferson, Alabama.

Also killed was

Lance Cpl. Justin D. Sims, 22, of Covington, Kentucky. Sims was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

PA Guard Member Killed in Taqaddum

Spc. Mark W. Melcher, 34, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died in Al Taqaddum, Iraq on April 15, when his M1A1 Abrams tank came under enemy small-arms fire during combat operations. Melcher was assigned to the National Guard's 1st Battalion, 103rd Armor, Friedens, Pennsylvania.

Marine Dies in Non-Hostile Vehicle Accident

Lance Cpl. Darin T. Settle, 23, of Henley, Missouri, died April 14 from a non-hostile motor vehicle accident in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  Settle was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Cpl. Salem Bachar, 20, of Chula Vista, California. Bachar was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. 

Lance Cpl. Stephen J. Perez, 22, of San Antonio, Texas. Perez was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Spc. Andrew K. Waits, 23, of Waterford, Michigan, died April 13, in Baghdad, Iraq, where an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Waits was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Comabt Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died of injuries sustained in Misiab, Iraq on April 12, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations.  Killed were:

Spc. Scott M. Bandhold, 37, of North Merrick, New York.

Pfc. Roland E. Calderonascenio, 21, of Miami, Florida.

Three Soldiers Killed in Enemy Attack in Taji

Three members of the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died of injuries sustained in Taji, Iraq on April 11, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Bradley Fighting Vehicle and they subsequently came under small arms fire during combat operations. Killed were:

Cpl. Joseph A. Blanco, 25, of Bloomington, California.

Pfc. James F. Costello III, 27, of St. Louis, Missouri.

Pfc. George R. Roehl, Jr., 21, of Manchester, New Hampshire.


Suicide Bomber Kills Soldier in Rawah

Spc. Kenneth D. Hess, 26, of Asheville, North Carolina, died in Rawah, Iraq on April 11, as the result of a suicide bomber attack while Hess was conducting a dismounted patrol.  Hess was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

A Third Soldier Dies from IED Blast in Ar Ramadi on April 9th

Sgt. 1st Class Randall L. Lamberson, 36, of Springfield, Missouri, died in Balad, Iraq on April 10 from injuries received in Ar Ramadi, Iraq on April 9, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during convoy operations.  Lamberson is the third member of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky killed by the blast.  Lamberson joined the Army in May 1989 and arrived at Fort Campbell in September 2001.  Lamberson is survived by his father, wife, daughter and son.


Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Cause

Spc. James W. Gardner, 22, of Glasgow, Kentucky, died in Tal Afar, in Iraq, on April 10, from a non-combat related cause.  Gardner was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He joined the Army in March 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell in December 2003.  Gardner is survived by his parents, his wife and two step-daughters.

IED Blast Claims Two Soldiers in Ar Ramadi

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq on April 9, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during convoy operations.  A third soldier, Sgt. Lamberson, was injured by the blast.  Killed were:

Spc. David S. Collins, 24, of Jasper Georgia.  Collins joined the Army in January 2002 and arrived at Fort Cambell in June 2002.  Collins is survived by his father and mother, wife, son, and daughter.

Sgt. 1st Class Gregory S. Rogers, 42, of Cincinnati, Ohio.  Rogers joined the Army in 1984 and arrived at Fort Campbell in September 2003.  Rogers is survived by parents, and two daughters.


IED Kills Soldier in Balad

Pfc. Joseph I. Love, 22, of North Pole, Alaska, died in Balad, Iraq, on April 9, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during convoy operations.  Love was assigned to the 94th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), 8th Sustainment Command (Theater), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Lance Cpl. Juana NavarroArellano, 24, of Ceres, California, died April 8 from wounds received while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  She was assigned to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.


Enemy Fire Claims Marine in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. Philip J. Martini, 24, of Lansing, Illinois, died April 8, of a gunshot wound while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Martini was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.


 U.S. ARMY

IED Blast Kills Soldier in Tar Afar

Pvt. Jody W. Missildine, 19, of Plant City, Florida, died in Tal Afar, Iraq, on April 8, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during convoy operations.  Missildine was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Rawah

Spc. Shawn R. Creighton, 21, of Windsor, North Carolina, died in Rawah, Iraq on April 8, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Stryker vehicle during patrol operations. Creighton was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Pfc. Chase A. Edwards, 19, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, died April 6 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Edwards was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


Marine Shot to Death on Coalition Base

Lance Cpl. Bryan N. Taylor, 20, of Milford, Ohio, died April 6.  He was hot by an Iraqi Army soldier on a coalition base near Al Qaim, Iraq.  Taylor was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Blast Kills Soldier in Bayji

Spc. Dustin J. Harris, 21, of Bangor, Maine, died in Bayji, Iraq on April 6, when an improvised device detonated while he was conducting dismounted patrol operations. Harris was assigned to the 172nd Brigade Support Battalion, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

IED Blast Killed IA Guard Member in Bayji

Spc. Daniel L. Sesker, 22, of Ogden, Iowa, died during combat operations in Bayji, Iraq on April 6, when an improvised explosive device detonated directly adjacent to his HMMWV in which he was the gunner. Sesker was assigned to the Army National Guard's Troop C, 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry in LeMars, Iowa.  Sesker was born in in April 1983 and graduated from Ogden High School in 2001, where he participated in wrestling. He had attended Iowa Central Community College, where he studied Criminal Law. Sesker enlisted in the 113th Cavalry in August 2000 as a Calvary Scout and was deployed to the Balkans from 2003-04 as part of Kosovo Force (KFOR). In 2005, he deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as part of the Task Force 49th Military Police Personal Security Detail.  Sesker is survived by his mother and stepfather, his father, his brother and sister-in-law, his sister, stepbrother, and fiancé.  His family issued the following statement:

"Dan was proud of his service in Kosovo in addition to his current service in Iraq. Dan was also a police officer in Gowrie, Iowa. He was known for his sense of humor, love of family and loyalty to his friends. Dan is loved by more people than can be counted. He is the best friend that anyone could ask for with a personality that brings positive energy to any room he enters. An excited father-to-be, he took pride in learning his new role and sharing fatherhood with his battle buddies. He will be missed more than any words can explain and his presence will forever be longed for. Private Sesker (his brother) is currently serving as a cavalry scout with the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division, stationed in Hawaii."

Spc. Ty J. Johnson, 28, of Elk Grove, California, died in Kirkuk, Iraq, on April 4, when an improvised device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.  Johnson was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Seven Marines and One Sailor Die in Vehicle Mishap

Six Marines died April 2, when the seven-ton truck they were riding in rolled over in a flash flood near Al Asad, Iraq. Killed were:

Cpl. Andres Aguilar Jr., 21, of Victoria, Texas. Aguilar was a communications technician with Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  Aguilar joined the Marine Corps June 2002 and reported to Hawaii March 2003. He deployed to Iraq March 2006. He also deployed to Afghanistan with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment from Nov. 2004 to June 2005. His awards include the Good Conduct Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and two Sea Service Deployment ribbons.  Aguilar is survived by his father, mother, and brother. Staff Sgt. Abraham G. Twitchell, 28, of Yelm, Washington. Twitchell was assigned to the Combat Service Support Group-1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Also killed were five members of the 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.  They were:

Cpl. David A. Bass, 20, of Nashville, Tennessee.

Lance Cpl. Patrick J. Gallagher, 27, of Jacksonville, Florida. 

Lance Cpl. Eric A. Palmisano, 27, of Florence, Wisconsin. Palmisano was listed as Duty Status - Whereabouts Unknown until his body was recovered April 11. 

Lance Cpl. Felipe D. Sandoval-Flores, 20, of Los Angeles, California.

Cpl. Brian R. St. Germain, 22, of Warwick, Rhode Island.

Also killed in the incident was

Petty Officer 3rd Class Marcques J. Nettles, 22, of Beaverton, Oregon.  Nettles was previously listed as Duty Status - Whereabouts Unknown.  His body was recovered April 16.  Nettles was assigned to 1st Combat Logistics Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.


Enemy Fire Claims Three Marines in Al Anbar Province

Three members of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina died April 2 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Killed were:

Lance Cpl. Kun Y. Kim, 20, of Atlanta, Georgia.

Staff Sgt. Eric A. McIntosh, 29, of Trafford, Pennsylvania.

Cpl. Scott J. Procopio, 20, of Saugus, Massachusetts.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Hit

Pfc. Jeremy W. Ehle, 19, of Richmond, Virginia, died on April 2 in Hit, Iraq from wounds sustained when his dismounted patrol came under enemy small arms fire during combat operations. Ehle was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany.

Sailor Dies in Al Anbar Province

Hospitalman Geovani Padillaaleman, 20, of South Gate, California, died April 2 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Padillaaleman was permanently assigned to Bethesda Naval Hospital, USNS Comfort Detachment and operationally assigned to Third Battalion, Eighth Marine Regiment, 2/28 Brigade Combat Team.

IED Blast Kills Two Soldiers in Baghdad

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany died in Baghdad, Iraq, on April 1, when an improvised explosive device detonated while they were conducting a dismounted patrol. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Darrell P. Clay, 34, of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Sgt. Israel Devora Garcia, 23, of Clint, Texas.


Two Soldiers Die in Helicopter Crash

Two members of the Army's 4th Battalion, 4th Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died in Baghdad Iraq on April 1, when their Apache helicopter crashed while conducting a combat air patrol.  Killed were:

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Michael L. Hartwick, of Orrick, Missouri.

Capt. Timothy J. Moshier, 25, of Albany, New York.
