Master Sgt. Emigdio E. Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Army Staff Sgt. Dwayne P. R. Lewis, 26, of New York City, died in Baghdad February 27 when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. Lewis was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.

IED Blast Kills Two Soldiers in Baghdad

Two members of the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division of Fort Drum, New York died in Baghdad, Iraq on February 26, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during patrol operations. Killed were:

Spc. Clay P. Farr, 21, of Bakersfield, California.

Spc. Joshua U. Humble, 21, of Appleton, Maine.


Enemy Fire Claims Soldier on Patrol in Baghdad

 

Staff Sgt. Christopher J. Schornak, 28, of Hoover, Alabama, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on February 26, when his dismounted patrol was engaged by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Schornak was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Mosul

Spc. Joshua M. Pearce, 21, of Guymon, Oklahoma, died in Mosul, Iraq, on February 26, when an improvised explosive device detonated near Stryker military vehicle during patrol operations.  Pearce was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

IED Kills Marine in Ar Ramadi

Lance Cpl. Adam J. Vanalstine, 21, of Superior, Wisconsin, died February 25, from an improvised explosive device in Ar Ramadi, Iraq.  Vanalstine was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.  During Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).


Marine Dies in Ar Ramadi from Injuries Received in Mortar Attack

Lance Cpl. John J. Thornton, 22, of Phoenix, Arizona, died February 25 of wounds received as a result of an enemy mortar attack in Ar Ramadi, Iraq.  Thornton was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.  During Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Enemy Fire Claims NY Guard Member

Pfc. Benjamin C. Schuster, 21, of Williamsville, New York, died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq on February 25, from a gunshot wound.  Schuster was assigned to the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 101st Cavalry Regiment, Buffalo, New York.

Two Soldiers Die in Separate Incidents from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Sgt. Dimitri Muscat, 21, of Aurora, Colorado, died in Balad, Iraq, on February 24, of non-combat related injuries sustained earlier that day in Samarra, Iraq.  Muscat was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Pvt. Joshua F. Powers, 21, of Skiatook, Oklahoma, died in Baghdad, Iraq on February 24, from a non-combat related injury.  Powers was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

IED Claims Four Soldiers in Al Hawijah

Four members of the Army's 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, died in Al Hawijah, Iraq, on February 22, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during patrol operations. Killed were:

Sgt. Rickey E. Jones, 21, of Kokomo, Indiana.

Pfc. Christopher L. Marion, 20, of Pineville, Missouri.

IED Claims Three Soldiers in Balad

Three members of the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado died near Balad, Iraq, on February 22, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Bradley Fighting Vehicle.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Curtis T. Howard II, 32, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Sgt. Gordon F. Misner II, 23, of Sparks, Nevada.

Spc. Thomas J. Wilwerth, 21, of Mastic, New York.

Marine Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

2nd Lt. Almar L. Fitzgerald, 23, of Lexington, South Carolina, died February 21 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany from wounds received February 18 as a result of an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Fitzgerald was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.  During Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Marine Killed by IED Near Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Jay T. Collado, 31, of Columbia, South Carolina, died February 20 from an improvised explosive device near Baghdad, Iraq.  Collado was assigned to Marine Light/Attack Helicopter Squadron-267, Marine Aircraft Group-39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.  During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was attached to the U.S. Army's 4th Infantr Division.

IED Claims Airman in Baghdad

Daniel J. Kuhlmeier, 30, of Omaha, Nebraska, died February 20 in Baghdad, Iraq when the convoy he was traveling in was struck by an improvised explosive device.  Kuhlmeier was assigned to Detachment 204, 2nd Field Investigations Region, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.

IED Blast Kills KS Guard Member in Baghdad

Sgt. Jessie Davila, 29, of Greensburg, Kansas, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on February 20, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Davila was assigned to the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry, Lawrence, Kansas.

Marine Killed by IED Near Baghdad

Cpl. Matthew D. Conley, 21, of Killen, Alabama, died February 18, when his vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in Ar Ramadi, Iraq.  Conley was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.  During Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Sgt. Charles E. Matheny, IV, 23 of Stanwood, Washington, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on February 18, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  Matheny was assigned to the Army's 704th Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Claims Ten Service Personnel in Abu Ghraib

Eight Marines and two airmen who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom   died February 17 when two CH-53 helicopters crashed into the Gulf of Aden in the vicinity of Ras Siyyan, northern Djibouti, while flying a training mission in the Godoria Range area.  The Marines and airmen were deployed to Djibouti as part of the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.

The Marines were assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, Marine Air Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, New River, North Carolina.  Killed were:

1st Lt. Brandon R. Dronet, 33, of Erath, Louisiana.

Sgt. James F. Fordyce, 22, of Newton Square, Pennsylvania.

Lance Cpl. Samuel W. Large, Jr., 21, of Villa Rica, Georgia.

Sgt. Donnie Leo F. Levens, 25, of Long Beach, Mississippi.

Staff Sgt. Luis M. Melendez Sanchez, 33, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Sanchez was assigned to the 1st Communications Squadron, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia.

Enemy Fire Kills Soldier in Tikrit

Cpt. Anthony R. Garcia, 48, of Fort Worth, Texas, died in Tikrit, Iraq, on February 17, from a gun shot wound. Garcia was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

GA Guard Member Dies from a Non-Combat Related Cause

Sgt. 1st Class Amos C. Edwards, Jr., 41, of Savannah, Georgia, died in Ar Rutbah, Iraq, on February 17, from a non-combat related cause. Edwards was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment, 48th Brigade Combat Team, Savannah, Georgia.

IED Blast Kills Two Marines in Al Qa'im

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division; II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina died February 14, when a suicide car bomber attacked their vehicle near Al Qa’im, Iraq. Killed were:

Lance Cpl. Matthew R. Barnes, 20, of West Monroe, Louisiana.

Cpl. Rusty L. Washam, 21, of Huntsville, Tennessee.

Roadside Bomb Kills Four in Afghanistan

Four Soldiers died February 13 when a roadside bomb detonated near their Humvee during north of Deh Rawod, Afghanistan.  Killed were:

Two of the killed were members of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  They were:

Staff Sgt. Edwin H. Dazachacon, 38, of Belleville, Illinois.

Sgt. 1st Class Chad A. Gonsalves, 31, of Turlock, California.

One of the soldier killed was member of the Group Support Battalion.  He was:

Sgt. Alberto D. Montrond, 27, of Suffolk, Mass. He was assigned to the Group Support Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg.

The fourth soldier killed was:

Staff Sgt. Clinton T. Newman, 26, of San Antonio. Newman was assigned to the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade, San Antonio.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Tikrit

Cpl. Andrew J. Kemple, 23, of Cambridge, Minnesota, died in Tikrit, Iraq on February 12, when his HMMWV came under small arms fire during combat operations.  Kemple was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in Ramadi

Spc. Felipe J. Garcia Villareal, 26, of Burke, Virginia, died at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., on February 12, of injuries sustained in Ramadi, Iraq on February 9, when his tent caught fire.  Garcia Villareal was assigned to the 54th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade, Warner Barracks, Bamberg, Germany.


 U.S. NAVY

IED Claims Sailor in Al Anbar

Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Wilson, 25, of Newark Valley, New York, died February 12 as a result of an improvised explosive device in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Wilson was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Three, based in San Diego, California.

Two Marines Killed by IED in Fallujah

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California died February 9 from wounds received as a result of an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations near Fallujah, Iraq. During OIF their unit is attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).  Killed were:

Pfc. Javier Chavez, Jr., 19, of Cutler, California.

Cpl. Ross A. Smith, 21, of Wyoming, Michigan.


Marine Killed in Non-Hostile Vehicle Accident

Pfc. Matthew L. Bertolino, 20, of Hampstead, New Hampshire, died February 9, when the vehicle he was traveling in was involved in a rollover while operating as part of a combat patrol near Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Bertolino was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Bertolino joined the Marine Corps January 2005 and reported to Hawaii July 2005. He deployed to Afghanistan January 2006. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.  Bertolino is survived by his father and mother.

Marine Killed in Non-Hostile Vehicle Accident

Lance Cpl. Steven L. Phillips, 27, of Chesapeake, Virginia, died February 7 from a non-hostile vehicle accident while conducting combat operations against enemy forces near Qaim, Iraq. Phillips was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

SD Guard Member Dies from Injuries from IED

Spc. Allen D. Kokesh, Jr., 21, of Yankton, South Dakota, died at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, on February 7 of injuries sustained in Baghdad, Iraq, on December 4 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  Kokesh was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery, Yankton, South Dakota.

Sailor Killed by Enemy Fire

Petty Officer 3rd Class John T. Fralish, 30, of New Kingstown, Pennsylvania, died February 6, when enemy forces opened fire on a U.S. patrol northwest of Methar Lam in Laghman Province, Afghanistan.  Fralish was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division Detachment, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe, Hawaii.

IED Claims Four Marines in Hit

Four Marines died February 6 from an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Hit, Iraq.  Three of the Marines were members of the Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  They were:

Cpl. Orville Gerena, 21, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Lance Cpl. David S. Parr, 22, of Benson, North Carolina

Pfc. Jacob D. Spann, 21, of Columbus, Ohio.

The fourth Marine killed was:

Cpl. Brandon S. Schuck, 21, of Safford, Arizona.  Schuck was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Claims Soldier in Rawah

Spc. Patrick W. Herried, 29, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died in Rawah, Iraq, on February 6, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Stryker military vehicle during patrol operations.  Herried was assigned to the Army's 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


Two Soldiers Were Killed When IED Detonated Near Their Vehicle

Two members of the 562nd Engineer Company, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska died in Al Husayniyah, Iraq on Feb. 5, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Stryker Engineer Squad Vehicle. Killed were:

Sgt. Jeremiah J. Boehmer, 22, of Parkston, South Dakota.

Staff Sgt. Christopher R. Morningstar, 27, of San Antonio, Texas.

Spc. William S. Hayes III, 23, of St. Tammany, Louisiana, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on February 5, of a non-combat related injury.  Hayes was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies in Vehicle Roller Over

Spc. Sergio A. Mercedes Saez, 23, of New York, New York, died in Baghdad, Iraq on February 5, when the HMMWV in which he was riding accidentally rolled over into a canal.  Mercedes Saez was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


IED Blast Kills Soldier in Al Husayniyah

Two members of the 562nd Engineer Company, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska died in Al Husayniyah, Iraq on February 5, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Stryker Engineer Squad Vehicle. Killed were:

Spc. Jesse M. Zamora, 22, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, died in Bayji, Iraq, on February 3, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  Zamora was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


Enemy Action Claims Soldier in Ar Ramadi

Sgt. 1st Class Lance S. Cornett, 33, of London, Kentucky, died in the vicinity of Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on February 3, of injuries sustained earlier that day while engaging enemy forces.  Cornett was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Soldier Killed in Roll Over in Ashraf

Pfc. Scott A. Messer, 26, of Ashland, Kentucky, died in Ashraf, Iraq, on February 2, when his HMMWV accidentally rolled over during convoy operations.  Messer was assigned to the Army's 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Taji

1st. Lt. Simon T. Cox, Jr., 30, of Texas, died in Taji, Iraq, on February 2, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M2A3 Bradley.  Cox was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.  Cox grew up in Texas and enlisted in the Army in 1994 as an Infantryman.  Following a tour of duty in Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division as a Rifleman and Long Range Reconnaissance Scout, Cox attended the University of Texas at Arlington, and graduated in 2002 with a BA in English.  After completing the Engineer Officer's Basic Course, Cox was assigned to the 4th ID's 1st Brigade, and deployed to Tikrit, Iraq in October 2003.  While deployed, Cox served as a Sapper Platoon Leader in Bravo Company, 299th Engineer Battalion until he redeployed in March 2004.  After redeployment, Cox assumed several platoon leadership roles and was recognized for his outstanding leadership ability.  Cox received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal.  Cox is survived by his wife and two sons.


Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Balad

Spc. Walter B. Howard, II, 35, of Rochester, Michigan, died in Balad, Iraq, on February 2, of injuries sustained earlier that day in Ashraf, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M1 Abrams tank.  Howard was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

 Enemy Fire Claims Soldier in Baghdad

Spc. Anthony C. Owens, 21, of Conway, South Carolina, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on February 1, when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using grenades and small arms fire.  Owens was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
