Enemy Fire Claims Soldier on Patrol

Staff Sgt. John G. Doles, 29, of Claremore, Oklahoma, died in Shah Wali, Afghanistan, on Sept. 30, during patrol operations when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire.  Doles was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, Vicenza, Italy.


Soldier Killed in Vehicle Roll Over

Sgt. 1st Class James J. Stoddard Jr., 29, of Crofton, Maryland, died in Afghanistan on September 30, when his vehicle accidentally rolled over.  Stoddard was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Five PA Guard Members Killed in Ar Ramadi

Five members of the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, New Milford, Pennsylvania, died on September 28, in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when their M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle was attacked by enemy forces.  Killed were:

   

 

Staff Sgt. Daniel L. Arnold, 27, of Montrose, Pennsylvania.

Pfc. Oliver J. Brown, 19, of Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

Staff Sgt. George A. Pugliese, 39, of Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

Sgt. Eric W. Slebodnik, 21, of Greenfield Township, Pennsylvania.

Spc. Lee A. Wiegand, 20, of Hallstead, Pennsylvania.


Texas Guard Member Killed by IED in Umm Qasr

Sgt. Steve Morin, Jr., 34, of Arlington, Texas, died west of Umm Qasr, Iraq, on September 28, when an improvised explosive device detonated, overturning the HMMWV in which he was riding.  Morin was assigned to the Army National Guard's 111th Engineer Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, Mineral Wells, Texas.


 U.S. AIR FORCE

First Female Airman Killed in Support of Operation Iraq Freedom

Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Jacobson, 21, Riviera Beach, Florida, died September 28 near Camp Bucca, Iraq, when the vehicle she was riding in was hit by an improvised explosive device.  Jacobson was providing convoy security at the time of the attack and is the first female Airman killed in the line of duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 

Jacobson was assigned to the 17th Security Forces Squadron at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. She had been in the Air Force for two years and had been deployed to Iraq for more than three months.

"She was an outstanding Airman who embraced life and took on all the challenges and responsibilities with extraordinary commitment to her country, her comrades and her family," said Col. Scott Bethel, 17th Training Wing commander at Goodfellow.  "Her dedication to the U.S. Air Force and serving her country was evident in all aspects of who this young lady was," he said.  Source: Air Force Link (9/30/05)

Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire in Ar Ramadi

Staff Sgt. Jason A. Benford, 30, of Toledo, Ohio, died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on September 27, when his patrol was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Benford was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.

Marine Killed in Mortar Attack

Lance Cpl. Steven A. Valdez, 20, of McRea, Arkansas, died September 26 from enemy mortar fire at Camp Blessing, Afghanistan.  Valdez was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  Valdez joined the Marine Corps in June 2004 and reported to Hawaii in November 2004.  He deployed to Afghanistan in June 2005 as a machine gunner with Weapons Platoon, Company E.  Included among his many awards is the Purple Heart, Valdez is survived by his mother and father.

Helicopter Crash Claims 5 U. S. Troops in Afghanistan

All five personnel aboard a CH-47 transport helicopter were killed when it crashed southwest of Deh Chopan, Afghanistan, on September 25. Officials reported that the aircraft was returning from a mission in support of an ongoing operation at the time of the crash.  There were no reports of enemy involvement in the crash. 

Four of the five killed were members of the Nevada and Oregon Army National Guard.  The fifth soldier killed was a members of the 159th Aviation Regiment.  Killed were:

U.S. Army

Sgt. Kenneth G. Ross, 24, of Peoria, Arizona.  Ross was assigned to the Army's 7th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, Giebelstadt, Germany.

Army National Guard

Sgt. Tane T. Baum, 30, of Pendleton, Oregon.  Baum was assigned to the Army National Guard's 113th Aviation Regiment, Pendleton, Oregon.

Chief Warrant Officer John M. Flynn, 36, of Sparks, Nevada.  Flynn was assigned to the Army National Guard's 113th Aviation Regiment, Stead, Nevada.

Sgt. Patrick D. Stewart, 35, of Fernley, Nevada. Stewart was assigned to the Army National Guard's 113th Aviation Regiment, Stead, Nevada.

Warrant Officer Adrian B. Stump, 22, of Pendleton, Oregon.   Stump was assigned to the Army National Guard's 113th Aviation Regiment, Pendleton, Oregon.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. (This report is based on a news release from Combined Forces Command Afghanistan and reported by the American Forces Press Service.)

Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire West of Kandahar

Staff Sgt. Robert F. White, 34, of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, died west of Kandahar, Afghanistan on September 26 when his mounted patrol was engaged by enemy forces using small arms fire. According to an AFPS release, White was taking part in a combined assault with U.S. and Afghan troops west of Kandahar when enemy forces fired rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire at their vehicles. One other U.S. soldier was wounded in the attack and taken to a hospital in Kandahar for treatment. He was listed in stable condition. The unit returned fire, killing two enemy fighters and wounding a third. White was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marine Dies of Non-Hostile Injury

Pvt. Elijah M. Ortega, 19, of Oxnard, California, died September 26 as result of a non-hostile gunshot wound at Camp Baharia, Iraq.  Ortega was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Baghdad

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 314th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 78th Division, Fort Drum, New York, died in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained near Ar Rustimayah, Iraq, on September 26 when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations.  Killed were:

Master Sgt. Tulsa T. Tuliau, 33, of Watertown, New York.

Sgt. 1st Class Casey E. Howe, 32, of Philadelphia, New York.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Two WI Guard Members Killed by IED in Shaibah

Two members of the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Brigade, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin died in Shaibah, Iraq, on September 26, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during convoy operations. They were also attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Killed were:

Sgt. Andrew P. Wallace, 25, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Spc. Michael J. Wendling, 20, of Mayville, Wisconsin.


AZ Guard Member Killed by IED in Baghdad

Sgt. Howard P. Allen, 31, of Mesa, Arizona, died in Baghdad, Iraq on September 26 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  Allen was assigned to the Army National Guard's 860th Military Police Company, Phoenix, Arizona.

TX Guard Member Dies from Injuries Sustained in Vehicle Roll Over

Sgt. Shawn A. Graham, 34, of Red Oak, Texas, died on September 25 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries sustained earlier that day in Baghdad, Iraq.  The vehicle in which he was riding accidentally rolled over.  Graham was assigned to the Army National Guard's 124th Cavalry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, Fort Worth, Texas.

Marine Killed by IED in Taqaddum

Sgt. Brian E. Dunlap, 34, of Vista, California, died September 24 from an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Taqaddum, Iraq.  Dunlap was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Los Alamitos, California.  As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Second Member of CA Guard Dies from 9/23 IED Attack in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Daniel R. Scheile, 37, of Antioch, California, died on September 24. On September 23, in Baghdad, Iraq, Scheile (and Sgt. Neubauer) were fatally injured when an improvised explosive device detonated near their M113 armored personnel carrier.  They also were attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Scheile was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Oakdale, California.  Scheile enlisted in the CA Army National Guard in October of 1987. During his career with the California Army National Guard he has served with the 570th Military Police Company, 579th Engineer Battalion and elements of the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry. Sergeant First Class Scheile loved his family, his cats, motorcycles, and X-box. In civilian life he partnered with his father in the masonry business. Scheile is survived by his wife, father, mother and two daughters. (Source: CA-ARNG website.)

Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire in Baghdad

Sgt. Andrew J. Derrick, 25, of Columbia, South Carolina, died on September 23 near Baghdad, Iraq when his dismounted team came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Derrick was assigned to the 411th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

CA Guard Member Killed in IED Attack in Baghdad

Sgt. Paul C. Neubauer, 40, of Oceanside, California, died on September 23 died in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M113 armored personnel carrier. Staff Sgt. Daniel R. Scheile was also fatally injured in the attack and died September 24th.  Both men were also attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Neuebauer was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Oakdale, California. Neubauer began his military service in April of 1986 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1991 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Staff Sergeant Neubauer was discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserve in November of 1993. He entered the CA Army National Guard in 1997 and served with Troop H, 1st Squadron, 18th Cavalry and elements of the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry (AASLT). In 1999, Neubauer joined Team Shield Counter Drug and continued working with them until his mobilization. He enjoyed his service in Iraq, believed in the mission, and treasured working and interacting with the local populace. Staff Sergeant Neubauer was known by his peers and supervisors for being a hard working team player, selfless in his duties and personal affairs, and being able to make others laugh. He is survived by his wife and a daughter, his father and a sister. (Source: CA-ARNG website.)

Soldier Killed by IED in Taqaddum

Spc. Kevin M. Jones, 21, of Washington, North Carolina, died near Al Taqaddum, Iraq, on September 22, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Jones was assigned to the 181st Transportation Battalion, 7th Corps Support Group, 3rd Corps Support Command, Mannheim, Germany.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

KY Guard Member Killed in Baghdad by IED

Staff Sgt. William A. Allers III, 28, of Leitchfield, Kentucky, died in the vicinity of Khalis, north of Baghdad, Iraq, on September 20 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle.  Allers was assigned to the Army National Guard's 198th Military Police Battalion, 75th Troop Command, Louisville, Kentucky.


Enemy Fire in Ramadi Claims VT Guard Member

Spc. Scott P. McLaughlin, 29, of Hardwick, Vermont, died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on September 22 as a result of enemy small arms fire.  McLaughlin was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 172nd Armor Regiment, 42nd Armor Division, St. Albans, Vermont.


CA Guard Member Dies of Injuries Received in 9/21 IED Blast in Baghdad

Spc. Mike T. Sonoda, Jr., 34, of Fallbrook, California, died in Baghdad, Iraq on September 22 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M113 Armored Personnel Carrier on September 21.  Sonoda was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, Fullerton, California.  Sonoda joined the U.S. Army in 1995 and served until September of 1997 as a Parachute Rigger in the 325th Airborne, Vincenza, Italy. He had over 50 static line jumps and earned his Italian jump wings. In 1999, Sonoda joined the CA Army National Guard. During his enlistment he was assigned to elements of the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry (AASLT). From September of 2001 to March of 2002, Sonoda served in Kuwait for Operation Enduring Freedom. In civilian life he worked for the United Postal Service as a Hazardous Material package inspector. Sonoda was very close to his family and often talked about his parents. He is survived by his father and mother.

Soldier Dies in Vehicle Accident

Sgt. Travis M. Arndt, 23, of Bozeman, Montana, died in Kirkuk, Iraq, on September 21 as a result of a vehicle accident during convoy operations. Arndt was assigned to the Army National Guard's 163rd Cavalry Troop, 116th Brigade Combat Team, 42nd Infantry Division, Missoula, Montana.

Staff Sgt. William A. Sgt. Pierre A. Raymond, 28, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, died at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, on September 20, of injuries sustained in Ramadi, Iraq, on September 15, when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using indirect fire.  Raymond was assigned to the Army Reserve's 228th Forward Support Battalion, 28th Infantry Division, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

KY Guard Member Killed in Baghdad by IED

Staff Sgt. William A. Soldier Killed in Baghdad by IED

Sgt. 1st Class Lawrence E. Morrison, 45, of Yakima, Washington, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 19, of injuries sustained earlier that day in Taji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Morrison was a reservist assigned to the U.S. Army Civil and Psychological Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Four Guard Members Die from Injuries Received in IED Blast in Ar Ramadi

Three Pennsylvania Army National Guard soldiers, and a fourth from the Vermont National Guard, were killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Ar Ramadi, Al Anbar Province, Monday, September 19 around 11:30 a.m. The soldiers were on a routine patrol when their convoy was attacked. The attack killed three soldiers in their up-armored HMMWV and another in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. All soldiers were assigned to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team.  Killed in the attack were:

1st Lt. Mark H. Dooley, 27, of Wallkill, New York.  Dooley was assigned to the Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment (Mountain), 42nd Infantry Division, Jericho, Vermont.

Sgt. Michael Egan, 36, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Egan was assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Troop, 1/104th Cavalry, Philadelphia.  Egan served in the Marines from 1990 to 1999.  He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard in 2001.  As a civilian, Egan worked for Reliance Electric in Philadelphia.

Spc. William L. Evans, 22, of Hallstead, Pennsylvania, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 19 of injuries sustained earlier that day in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle during combat operations.  Evans was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Evans joined the Pennsylvania National Guard in April 2003.  In his civilian capacity, Evans worked at Craige's Photique, Montrose , Susquehanna County.

Spc. William V. Fernandez, 37, of Reading, Pennsylvania.  Fernandez was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Squadron, 104th Cavalry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast While on Escort Mission

Staff Sgt. Regilio E. Nelom, 45, of Queens, New York, died near Al Asad, Iraq, on September 17, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during an escort mission.  Nelom was assigned to the 249th Quartermaster Company, 1st Corps Support Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Three Soldiers Killed in Tank by IED in Baghdad

Three members of the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 16, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their M1A1 Abrams tank during patrol operations. Killed were:

1st Sgt. Alan N. Gifford, 39, of Tallahassee, Florida.

Spc. David H. Ford IV, 20, of Ironton, Ohio.

Sgt. Matthew L. Deckard, 29, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Marines Killed by Indirect Fire at Camp Ramadi

Lance Cpl. Shane C. Swanberg, 24, of Kirkland, Washington, died September 15 from an explosion resulting from indirect fire at Forward Operating Base, Camp Ramadi, Iraq. Swanberg was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.  As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

CA Guard Member Killed by IED in Baghdad

Sgt. Alfredo B. Silva, 35, of Calexico, California, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 15, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during patrol operations.  Silva was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division, Modesto, California.  Silva joined the CA Army National Guard in November 1998, after serving three years with the U.S. Army as a Fire Support Specialist for a COLT Team in Fort Hood, Texas. He began his service with the CA Army National Guard as an engineer and later transferred to Company B, 640th Division Aviation Support Battalion (DASB) as a Metal Worker Repairer. In August of 2004 Staff Sergeant Silva was transferred to Detachment 1, HHB 1-487th FA as a Forward Observer and ordered to active duty for the purpose of OCONUS Deployment ISO Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to mobilization Staff Sergeant Silva was also a member of the CA Counter-Drug Task Force’s Team Engineer. He was a very private person, but loved to talk about his wife and daughter, whom he cherished dearly.Silva is survived by his wife and daughter, and his mother.

Sailor Lost at Sea

Seaman Apprentice Robert D. Macrum, 22, of Sugarland, Texas, was lost at sea.  He was last seen the evening of September 12 while the ship was underway.  Macrum was assigned to the USS Princeton, currently deployed to the Arabian Gulf conducting maritime security operations as part of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group.

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Spc. Jeremy M. Campbell, 21, of Middlebury, Pennsylvania, died on Sept. 11, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq, where an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during patrol operations. Campbell was assigned to the 108th Military Police Company, 503rd Military Police Battalion (Airborne), 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Staff Sgt. Christopher L. Everett, 23, of Huntsville, Texas, died on September 7, 2005, in Al Taqqadum, Iraq, in an accident involving a motor pool. Everett was assigned to the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 112th Armor Regiment, 56th Brigade Combat Team, Arlington, Texas.

Two members of the Brigade Troops Battalion, Division Support Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia died on September 6, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq, where an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV causing it to rollover. Killed were:

Soldier Killed by IED in Tal Afar

Spc. Jeffrey A. Williams, 20, of Warrenville, Illinois, died on September 5, 2005, in Tal Afar, Iraq, where an improvised explosive device detonated near his combat patrol.  Williams was assigned to the Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Spc. Luke C. Williams, 35, of Knoxville, Tennessee, died on September 5, 2005 in Baghdad, Iraq, when the HMMWV he was riding in accidentally rolled over into a ditch.  Williams was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Sgt. Matthew C. Bohling, 22, of Eagle River, Alaska, died on September 5, 2005, in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, where an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Bohling was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.

Marine Dies from Non-Hostile Injuries

Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Nass, 21, of Franklin, Wisconsin, died September 3 from a non-hostile gunshot wound at Camp Blessing, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Nass joined the Marine Corps in January 2003 and reported to Hawaii in July 2003.  He deployed to Afghanistan in June 2005 as a rifleman in 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, Company E. His awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medial, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal.  Nass is survived by his wife.

Soldier Dies When Bradley Tank Strikes IED

Sgt. 1st Class Lonnie J. Parson, 39, of Norcross, Georgia, died on September 2, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq, when his M3A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle was struck by an enemy explosive device.  Parson was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Enemy Fire Claims Soldier

1st Lt. Derek S. Hines, 25, of Newburyport, Massachusetts, died on Sept. 1, 2005, in Baylough, Afghanistan, when his unit was conducting security operations and came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Hines was assigned to the 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, Vicenza, Italy.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Two GA Guard Members Killed by IED

Two members of the Army National Guard's 108th Cavalry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade, Griffin, Georgia, died on Sept. 1, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during patrol operations.  Killed were:

Sgt. George R. Draughn Jr., 29, of Decatur, Georgia.

Staff Sgt. Robert L. Hollar Jr., 35, of Griffin, Georgia.
