TN Guard Member Killed by IED in Baghdad

Spc. James D. Carroll, 23, of McKenzie, Tennessee, died July 31 near Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV. Carroll was assigned to the Army National Guard's 230th Engineer Battalion, McKenzie, Tennessee.

WASHINGTON, July 31, 2005 - Five Task Force Baghdad soldiers were killed July 30 during two separate bomb attacks while they were conducting during patrols in Baghdad neighborhoods, Multinational Force Iraq officials announced.

One soldier was killed when a patrol struck an improvised explosive device around 1:40 p. m. in al-Dora, south of Baghdad. Four more soldiers were killed when their patrol southwest of Baghdad struck an improvised explosive device, around 11 p.m., officials said.

Two soldiers were wounded in the al-Dora attack.

The names of the soldiers killed are being withheld until their families are notified, and both incidents are under investigation, officials said.

Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Pfc. Jason D. Scheuerman, 20, of Lynchburg, Vriginia, died July 30 in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, of non-combat related injuries.  Scheuerman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.


Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Pfc. Robert A. Swaney, 21, of West Jefferson, Ohio, died July 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his patrol HMMWV.  Swaney was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Four GA Guard Members Killed in Baghdad by IED

Four members of the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade, Albany, Georgia, died on July 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV while they were on patrol. Killed were:

Sgt. 1st Class Victor A. Anderson, 39, of Ellaville, Georgia.

Sgt. Jonathon C. Haggin, 26, of Kingsland, Georgia

Staff Sgt. David R. Jones, Sr., 45, of Augusta, Georgia.

Sgt. Ronnie L. Shelley, Sr., 34, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Accident

Pvt. Ernesto R. Guerra, 20, of Long Beach, California, died July 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained on July 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his HMMWV was involved in an accident.  Guerra was assigned to the Army's 4-3rd Brigade Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Marine Killed by Enemy Fire in Cykla Village

Two members of the Marine Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Columbus, Ohio died July 28 when their unit came under attack by enemy small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades while conducting combat operations in Cykla, Iraq. Killed were:

Lance Cpl. Christopher P. Lyons, 24, of Shelby, Ohio.

Cpl. Andre L. Williams, 23, of Galloway, Ohio.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, their unit was attached to Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Soldier Killed by IED in Samarra

Spc. Edward L. Myers, 21, of St. Joseph, Missouri, died July 27 in Samarra, Iraq, where his unit was conducting patrol operations and an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  Myers was assigned to the Army's 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Two MPs Killed in Ashraf by a Detonated IED 

Two members of the 411th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas died July 27 in Ashraf, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during a patrol. Killed were:

Spc. Adrian J. Butler, 28, of East Lansing, Michigan.

Spc. John O. Tollefson, 22, of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.


 U.S. ARMY RESERVE

Reservist Killed in Vehicle Accident

Capt. Benjamin D. Jansky, 28, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, died July 27 in Al Taqaddum, Iraq, where his HMMWV was accidentally struck by another military vehicle. Janksy was assigned to the Army Reserve's 983rd Engineer Battalion, Monclova, Ohio.

Soldier Killed by Enemy Fire

Staff Sgt. Michael W. Schafer, 25, of Spring Hill, Florida, died July 25 in Oruzgan, Afghanistan, when he was shot by enemy forces while on a quick reaction force mission.  Schafer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, Vicenza, Italy.

Soldier Killed by IED in Samarra

Spc. Adam J. Harting, 21, of Portage, Indiana, died July 25 in Samarra, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Bradley Fighting Vehicle.  Harting was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 42nd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Soldier Killed in Mortar Attack in Balad

Sgt. Christopher J. Taylor, 22, of Opelika, Alabama, died July 24 in Balad, Iraq, when he was hit by mortar rounds while he was exiting a bunker.  Taylor was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Four Soldiers Killed by IED in Baghdad

Four members of the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado died on July 24, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq, where an improvised explosive device detonated near their Bradley Fighting Vehicle.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Jason W. Montefering, 27, of Parkston, South Dakota.

Spc. Ernest W. Dallas, Jr., 21, of Denton, Texas.

Sgt. Milton M. Monzon, Jr., 21, of Los Angeles, California.

Pfc. Ramon A. Villatoro, Jr., 19, of Bakersfield, California.

Four Georgia Guard Members Killed by IED in Baghdad

Four members of the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade, Albany, Georgia died on July 24, in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV while they were on patrol.  Killed were:

Sgt. Jason T. Palmerton, 25, of Auburn, Nebraska, died on July 23 in Qal'eh-Yegaz, Afghanistan, where he came under enemy small arms fire while conducting a dismounted patrol.  Palmerton was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marine Killed by IED During Combat Ops

Sgt. Bryan J. Opskar, 32, of Princeton, Minnesota, died July 23 when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations near Ar Rutbah, Iraq.  Opskar was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Marine Killed by IED in Zaidon

Cpl. Steven P. Gill, 24, of Round Rock, Texas, died July 21 from an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations near Zaidon, Iraq. Gill was assigned to the Marine Reserve's 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, San Antonio, Texas. During Operation Iraqi Freedom his unit was attached to Regimental Combat Team-8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Sailor Dies from Injuries Received in Hit

Petty Officer 3rd Class Travis L. Youngblood, 26, of Surrency, Georgia, died July 21 of wounds received July 15 from an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Hit, Iraq.  Youngblood was a hospital corpsman assigned to Naval Hospital Great Lakes, Great Lakes, Illinois, and deployed with the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Reservist Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Staff Sgt. Jefferey J. Farrow, 28, of Birmingham, Alabama, died July 19 in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, of non-combat related injuries.  Farrow was assigned to the Army Reserve's 146th Quartermaster Company, Fort Totten, New York.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad by IED

Sgt. Arthur R. McGill, 25, of Gravette, Arkansas, died July 19 in Baghdad, Iraq, where an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on mounted patrol in a HMMWV.  McGill was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Pvt. Lavena L. Johnson, 19, of Florissant, Missouri, died July 19 in Balad, Iraq, of non-combat related injuries.  Johnson was assigned to the Army's 129th Corps Support Battalion, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Marine Dies from Non-Hostile Incident

Lance Cpl. Efrain Sanchez, Jr., 26, of Port Chester, New York, died July 17 as result of a non-hostile incident at Camp Blue Diamond, in Ramadi, Iraq.  Sanchez was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 U.S. ARMY

Soldier Dies from Injuries in Baghdad

Spc. Ronnie D. Williams, 26, of Erlanger, Kentucky, died on July 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained on July 16 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his M1A2 Abrams tank left the road and entered a canal during patrol operations.   Williams was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Reservist Killed by Detonated IED

Staff Sgt. Frank Tiai, 45, of Pago Pago, American Samoa, died July 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position.  Tiai was assigned to the Army Reserve's 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry, Fort Shafter, Hawaii.

Soldier Killed by IED in Baghdad

Staff Sgt. Jorge L. Pena-Romero, 29, of Fallbrook, California, died July 16 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improved explosive device detonated near his HMMWV while his unit was conducting a mounted patrol.  Pena-Romero was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin, California.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

MS Guard Member Killed by IED in Baghdad

Sgt. Travis S. Cooper, 24, of Macon, Mississippi, died on July 16, in Balad, Iraq, from wounds sustained the previous day in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device exploded near the vehicle he was searching.  Cooper was assigned to the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 114th Field Artillery Regiment, Starkville, Mississippi.


UT Guard Member Killed in Kirkuk by IED

Sgt. 1st Class Ronald T. Wood, 28, of Cedar City, Utah, died July 16 in Kirkuk, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV. Wood was assigned to the Army National Guard's 148th Field Artillery, Brigham City, Utah.

Soldier Killed by IED

Spc. Jared D. Hartley, 22, of Newkirk, Oklahoma, died July 15 in Taji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV. Hartley was assigned as a light wheeled vehicle mechanic to the 125th Forward Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  He enlisted in the Army in June 2002 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since November 2002.  He deployed with his unit in February 2005 for his second rotation to Iraq.

Two Marines Killed by IED in Trebil

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, died July 14 when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations near Trebil, Iraq.  Killed were:

Cpl. Clifton B. Mounce, 22, of Pontotoc, Mississippi.

Cpl. Christopher D. Winchester, 23, of Flomaton, Alabama.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom they were assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in IED Blast

Pfc. Timothy J. Hines, Jr., 21, of Fairfield, Ohio, died on July 14 at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., from wounds sustained on June 19 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  Hines was assigned to the 64th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

NE Guard Member Killed While Tending to Injured

Staff Sgt. Tricia L. Jameson, 34, of Omaha, Nebraska, died on July 14 in Trebil, Iraq.  Jameson, a health care specialist was responding to a casualty incident when a secondary improvised explosive device detonated near her location. Jameson was assigned to 313th Medical Company, Army National Guard, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Soldier Killed by Land Mine in Baghdad

Spc. Benyahmin B. Yahudah, 24, of Bogart, Georgia, died on July 13 in Baghdad, Iraq, where a vehicle borne improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol.  Yahudah was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Remains of Missing SEAL Found

Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew G. Axelson, 29, of Cupertino, California, died while conducting counter-terrorism operations in Kunar province, Afghanistan. Coalition forces located the service member while conducting a combat search and rescue operation July 10 in Kunar province.  Axelson was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

 U.S. MARINES

Two Marines from Pennsylvania Killed in Hit

Two members of the Marine Forces Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Moundsville, West Virginia, died July 10 from enemy indirect fire while conducting combat operations in Hit, Iraq. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Joseph P. Goodrich, 32, of Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Kovacicek, 22, of Washington, Pennsylvania.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom their unit was attached to Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Soldier Killed by IED While Attempting to Evacuate a Wounded Soldier

Pfc. Eric P. Woods, 26, of Omaha, Nebraska, died on July 9 in Tal Afar, Iraq.  His HMMWV struck an improvised explosive device that caused the vehicle to overturn. Woods was in the area to evacuate another soldier who had been wounded.  Woods was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.


Soldier Killed During Ops in Tal Afar

Spc. Hoby F. Bradfield, Jr., 22, of The Woodlands, Texas, died July 9 in Tal Afar, Iraq while he was conducting a dismounted cordon search.  Bradfield was assigned to the Army's 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Baghdad

Two members of the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado, died on July 5, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during patrol operations. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Scottie L. Bright, 36, of Montgomery, Alabama.

Cpl. Lyle J. Cambridge, 23, of Shiprock, New Mexico.


Soldier Killed by IED in Baqubah

Spc. Christopher W. Dickison, 26, of Seattle, Washington, died July 5, in Baqubah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his patrol.  Dickison was assigned as a scout to the Army's 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  He enlisted in the Army in April 2002. and had been stationed at Fort Riley since October 2002.  Dickison deployed with his unit in January 2005 for his first rotation to Iraq.


Soldier Killed in Vehicle Roll Over

Pvt. Anthony M. Mazzarella, 22, of Blue Springs, Missouri, died July 5, in Taji, Iraq, when the HMMWV in which he was riding accidentally rolled over.  Mazzarella was assigned as a gunner of an Up-Armored HMMWV to the Army's 1st Battalion, 13th Armor Regiment, 1st Armor Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.  He enlisted into the Army in May 2003 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since October 2004.  Mazzarella deployed in March 2005 for his first rotation to Iraq.

HI Guard Member Killed by Land Mine

Sgt. Deyson K. Cariaga, 20, of Honolulu, Hawaii, died on July 5, in Al Hammadi, Iraq, when the HMMWV in which he was riding struck a land mine.  Cariaga was assigned to the Army National Guard's 229th Military Intelligence Company, 29th Separate Infantry Brigade, Oahu, Kalaeloa, Hawaii.

Remains of Two of the Four Missing Navy Seals Found

Coalition forces located the remains of two service members while conducting a combat search and rescue operation July 4 in Kunar Province.  Both died while conducting counter-terrorism operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. Their whereabouts had been unknown since June 28. Killed were:

Petty Officer 2nd Class Danny P. Dietz, 25, of Littleton, Colorado.  Dietz was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team Two, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Lt. Michael P. Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, New York.  Murphy was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Vehicle Accident

Staff Sgt. Jeremy A. Brown, 26, of Mabscott, West Virginia, died July 3 in Mosul Iraq, from injuries sustained earlier that day in Tal Afar, Iraq, when the HMMWV in which he was riding accidentally rolled over.  Brown was assigned to the Army's 66th Military Intelligence Company, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

KY Guard Member Killed in IED Blast in Baghdad

Spc. Ryan J. Montgomery, 22, of Greensburg, Kentucky, died July 3 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV while his unit was conducting convoy operations.  Montgomery was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 623rd Field Artillery Regiment, Campbellsville, Kentucky.
