Staff Sgt. Juan De Dios Garcia-Arana,
27, of Los Angeles, California, died April 30 in
Khaladiyah, Iraq, when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle was
attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire. Garcia-Arana
was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense
Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey,
Korea. |
Medical Condition Claims Soldier

Sgt. Kenya A. Parker,
26, of Fairfield, Alabama, died April 30 in Baghdad,
Iraq, of a non-combat related medical condition. Parker
was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd
Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Two
Soldiers Killed in IED Blast in Baghdad
Two members of the
2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade
Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry),
Fort Drum, New York died April 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an
improvised explosive device detonated near their
dismounted patrol. The soldiers were:

Pvt. Charles S. Cooper, Jr.,
19, of Jamestown, New York. Cooper joined the Army
in July 2004. He attended basic and advanced
individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia from July
to November 2004, when he was assigned to the 10th
Mountain Division at Fort Drum. Cooper's awards
and decorations included the Purple Heart, which he
received for wounds sustained during an IED attack in
the Baghdad neighborhood of Abu Ghraib.

Pfc. Darren A. Deblanc,
20, of Evansville, Indiana. Deblanc entered the
Army in November 2003. He graduated from basic military
training and advanced individual training at Fort
Benning, Georgia in March 2004. In April 2004, he was
assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment
and served as a grenadier. His awards and decorations
included the Purple Heart, which he received for wounds
sustained from hostile fire.

Two
Soldiers Killed in IED Blast
Two members of the
2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin,
California died April 29 in Diyarah, Iraq, when a
vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated as
they were conducting a traffic control point
inspection. Killed were:

Soldier Killed in Balad by IED Blast
2nd Lt. Clifford V. Gadsden,
25, of South Carolina, died April 29 in Balad, Iraq,
when a vehicle-born improvised explosive device
detonated near his convoy vehicle. Gadsden was assigned
to the Army’s 603rd Transportation Company, 142nd Corps
Support Battalion, Warrior Brigade, Fort Polk,
Louisiana.

Cpl. Joseph S. Tremblay,
23, of New Windsor, New York, died April 27 from
injuries received from a mine explosion while conducting
combat operations in vicinity of Hit, Iraq. Tremblay
was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s 3rd Battalion,
25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Moundsville,
West Virginia. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his
unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine

Soldier Dies of Injuries Sustained in IED Blast

1st Sgt. Timmy J. Millsap,
39, of Wichita, Kansas, died April 25 in Baghdad, Iraq,
of injuries sustained in Taji, Iraq, when an improvised
explosive device detonated near his HMMWV. Millsap was a
combat engineer with Company A, 70th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade,
1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He
enlisted in the Army in December 1984, and had
been stationed at Fort Riley since January 1999.
This was his second rotation to Iraq in support
of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He had
deployed with the 3rd Brigade in March 2003 and
returned in March 2004. |

WASHINGTON,
April 24, 2005 - Improvised explosive devices
claimed the lives of three service members
during weekend violence in Iraq, military
officials in Baghdad reported.
A Task Force
Baghdad soldier died this morning when an IED
detonated near a patrol in eastern Baghdad (see
Spc. Gary W. Walters, Jr.).
The previous
day, (Saturday, April 23, 2005) similar attacks
killed two service members. Those deaths include
(Sgt. Anthony J. Davis, Jr. and) a sailor assigned to the 2nd Marine Division,
2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) who
died after an IED attack near Fallujah (See
Seaman Aaron Kent).
Also, a
soldier assigned to the 155th Brigade Combat
Team, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward)
was killed after an IED exploded next to a
military convoy near al Haswah.
The names of those service
members killed are being withheld pending
notification of next of kin. |

31, of Victoria, Texas, died April 24 in Baghdad, Iraq,
when an improvised explosive device detonated near his
HMMWV. Walters was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th

Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin, California.
Seaman Killed Near Fallujah by IED
Seaman Aaron A. Kent,
28, of Portland, Oregon, died April 23, from an
improvised explosive device while conducting combat
operations near Fallujah, Iraq. Kent was assigned to
2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force
(Forward), Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Pvt. Joseph L. Knott,
21, of Yuma, Arizona, died April 17 in Baghdad, Iraq,
when his convoy was attacked by enemy forces using small

assigned to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort
Carson, Colorado.
Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Pfc. Steven F. Sirko,

Soldier Killed in Camp Taji by IED

Pvt. Aaron M. Hudson,
20, of Highland Village, Texas, died April 16 in
Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained April 15 in Camp
Taji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device
detonated near his patrol. Hudson was assigned to the
401st Military Police Company, 720th Military Police
Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood,
Texas.
Three Soldiers Killed in Ar Ramadi during Combat Ops
Three members of the
2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd
Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey,
Korea died April 16 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, while conducting
combat operations. According to a report issued by
the AFSP, seven soldiers were injured in the incident. Officials
said the attackers fled into a nearby mosque,
but the Iraqi security forces who pursued them
came up empty when searching the building.
Of the seven soldiers injured,
three were evacuated and four were treated for
minor injuries. Two returned to duty.
The soldiers killed were:

Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in
Guard Tower Fire

Cpl. Tyler J. Dickens,
20, of Columbus, Georgia, died April 12 at Brooke Army
Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, of injuries
sustained April 6 in Al Mahmudiyah, Iraq, when his guard
tower caught fire. Dickens was assigned to the Army’s
2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin,
California.
IA Guard Member Killed in Ar Ramadi
Spc. John W. Miller,
21, of West Burlington, Iowa, died April 12 in Camp
Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries received from enemy small arms
fire while on route clearance operations in Ar Ramadi,

DOD Names Soldiers Killed in Helicopter
Crash in Afghanistan
On Monday, April 11,
the Department of Defense (DoD) announced the death of eight
soldiers and the identity of six soldiers listed as
Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) who were
supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The
soldiers died or became unaccounted for on April 6 in
Ghanzi, Afghanistan, when the CH-47 helicopter they were
on crashed. On Tuesday, April 12, the DoD released
the name of one Marine also killed in the crash. On
Friday, April 15, the DoD changed the status of the
unaccounted after their remains were identified.

Division, San Antonio, Texas. During Operation Iraq
Freedom, Kinchen was attached to 3rd Reconnaissance

Soldier Killed in Attack While on Patrol in Balad
Ruz
Staff Sgt. Christopher W. Dill,
32, of Tonawanda, New York died April 4, 2005, in Balad
Ruz, Iraq, when his patrol was attacked by enemy forces
using small arms fire. Dill was assigned to the
Army Reserve's 2nd Battalion, 390th Infantry Regiment,
2nd Brigade, 98th Division, Buffalo, New York. Also
killed on this patrol was Sgt. 1st Class Stephen C.
Kennedy (see below).
TN Guard Member Killed in Attack While on Patrol
Sgt. 1st Class Stephen C. Kennedy,
35, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee died April 4, 2005, in Balad
Ruz, Iraq, when his patrol was attacked by enemy forces
using small arms fire. Kennedy was assigned to the
Army National Guard's 1st Squadron, 278th Armored
Cavalry Regiment, Lenoir City, Tennessee.
Also killed on this patrol was Staff Sgt. Christopher W.
Dill (see above).

KY Guard Member Killed in Bayji by IED
Sgt. James A. Sherrill,
27, of Ekron, Kentucky, died April 3, in Bayji, Iraq,
when an improvised explosive device detonated near his
military vehicle. Sherrill was assigned to the Army
National Guard’s 2113th Transportation Company, Paducah,
Kentucky.

Hostile Action Claims Marine in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. Tenzin Dengkhim,
19, of Falls Church, Virginia, died April 2 as a result
of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
Dengkhim was
assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion,
2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Soldier Killed in Mosul

Staff Sgt. Ioasa F. Tavae, Jr.,
29, of Pago Pago, American Samoa, died April 2, in Mosul,
Iraq, when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using
small arms fire. Tavae was assigned to the Army’s 1st
Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat
Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington. |

Cpl. Garry Wesley T. Rimes,
30, of Santa Maria, California, died April 1 as a result
of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Rimes was
assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st
Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp
Pendleton, California. During Operation Iraqi Freedom,
Rimes was attached to the 2nd Marine Division. |
