Soldier Dies from Injuries Received in Vehicle Accident

Sgt. Julio E. Negron, 28, of Pompano Beach, Florida, died February 28, in Bayji, from injuries sustained in a military vehicle accident that occurred that day.  Negron was assigned to the Army's 360th Transportation Company, 68th Corps Support Battalion, 43rd Area Support Group, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad by Enemy Fire

Pfc. Danny L. Anderson, 29, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died February 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained from small arms fire. Anderson was assigned to the Army's 26th Forward Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

IA Guard Member Killed in Ar Ramadi by IED

2nd Lt. Richard B. Gienau (pronounced "Gee now"), 29, of Peoria, Illinois, died February 27 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device hit his military vehicle. Gienau was assigned to the Army National Guard's 224th Engineer Battalion, Burlington, Iowa.  The Iowa Guard reported on its web site that the attack occurred at 10:50 a.m., Iraq time. Gienau graduated from Tripoli (Iowa) High School in 1994. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1994 and served until 1998. He enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in November 1999. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2003 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. through their Reserve Officers Training Corps in 2004. Gienau mobilized for Iraq with the 224th Engineer Battalion in October 2004. He is survived by his son; mother, Debbe Way, of Dunkerton; father, Richard, of Waterloo; and girlfriend, Katie Allen. Gienau was preceded in death by his sister, Amanda. His family issued the following statement:

"Brian was very proud to serve his country and believed deeply in what he was doing - we are very proud of him for his service. Though separation from his family while deployed was difficult, he felt a strong bond with his fellow soldiers and demonstrated profound compassion and concern for their well-being. Brian was well-liked and easy going. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school, loved children, and he was a wonderful father. Brian loved spending time in the outdoors, especially with his family. We will always remember him for his strong but gentle spirit."

Four other members of Gienau's unit were injured in the attack.  They were Sgt. Timothy Shay, 22, of Muscatine, Iowa; Spc. Justin Edginton, 23, from West Burlington, Iowa; Spec. Seth Garceau, 22, of Oelwein, Iowa, and Spec. Dennis Smutzer, 32, of Moline, Illinois.  Edgington was able to return to duty.  The other soldiers required treatment.

Marine Reservist Killed in Babil

Lance Cpl. Andrew W. Nowacki, 24, of South Euclid, Ohio, died February 26 from wounds received as a result of hostile action in Babil Province, Iraq. Nowacki was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Erie, Pennsylvania.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Abertha

Two members of the Army's 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, died February 26 in Abertha, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated while they were on patrol. The soldiers were:

Pfc. Min S. Choi, 21, of River Vale, New Jersey.

Pvt. Landon S. Giles, 19, of Indiana, Pennsylvania.

 U.S. ARMY

Three Soldiers Killed by IED in Taji

Three soldiers died February 25, in Taji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive devise detonated while they were on dismounted patrol. Two of the soldiers were members of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.  They were:

Spc. Colby M. Farnan, 22, of Weston, Missouri.

Spc. Jason L. Moski, 24, of Blackville, South Carolina.

The third soldier killed was:

Spc. Adam N. Brewer, 22, of Dewey, Oklahoma.  Brewer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.


Explosion Kills Soldier in Ramadi

Pfc. Chassan S. Henry, 20, of West Palm Beach, Florida, died February 25 in Ramadi, Iraq, from injuries sustained from an explosion while he was conducting combat operations.  Henry was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp, Hovey, Korea.

Soldier Killed in Muqdadiyah by IED

Spc. Jacob C. Palmatier, 29, of Springfield, Illinois, died February 24 in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle. Palmatier was assigned to 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.


Soldier Killed in Camp Wilson by IED

Staff Sgt. Daniel G. Gresham, 23, of Lincoln, Illinois, died February 24 in Camp Wilson, Iraq, when a second improvised explosive device detonated while he was responding to a first device. Gresham was assigned to the 797th Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 79th Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.


Soldier Dies From Enemy Fire in Al Anbar Province

Staff Sgt. Alexander B. Crackel, 31, of Wilstead Bedford, United Kingdom, died February 24 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, from injuries sustained from enemy small arms fire. Crackel was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, Camp Hovey, Korea.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Spc. Michael S. Deem, 35, of Rockledge, Fla., died February 24 in Baghdad, Iraq, from non-combat related injuries.  Deem was assigned to the Army's Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Soldier Killed in Tuz by IED

Staff Sgt. Eric M. Steffeney, 28, of Waterloo, Iowa, died February 23 in Tuz, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated. Steffeney was assigned to the 184th Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

LA Guard Member Killed in Baghdad by IED

Sgt. Nicholas J. Olivier, 26, of Ruston, Louisiana, died February 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on foot patrol. Olivier was assigned to the Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, Pineville, Louisiana.

Marine Dies from Non-Hostile Vehicle Incident

Lance Cpl. Trevor D. Aston, 32, of Austin, Texas, died February 22 as a result of non-hostile vehicle incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Aston was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Austin, Texas.

Hostile Action Claims Marine in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. John T. Olson, 21, of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, died February 21 as a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Olson was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Three MN Guard Members Killed by IED

Three members of the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 151st Field Artillery, 34th Infantry Division, Montevideo, Minnesota died February 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated as they were exiting their military vehicle after it had rolled over. Killed were:

   

Staff Sgt. David F. Day, 25, of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota.

Sgt. Jesse M. Lhotka, 24, of Alexandria, Minnesota.

Cpl. Kevin M. Clarke, 21, of Tinley Park, Illinois, died February 19 as a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Clarke was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Soldier Killed in Mosul Attack

Spc. Clinton R. Gertson, 26, of Houston, Texas, died 19 February in Mosul, Iraq, from injuries sustained from enemy forces small arms fire. Gertson was assigned to 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Killed in Baghdad by IED

1st Lt. Adam Malson, 23, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, died February 19 in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained while on patrol when an improvised explosive device detonated. Malson was assigned to 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, Fort Drum, New York.

LA Guard Member Killed in Baghdad by IED

Spc. Seth R. Trahan, 20, died February 19, in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained while on patrol when an improvised explosive device detonated. Trahan was assigned to the Army National Guard's 3d Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, Crowley, Louisiana.

Soldier Killed in Humaniyuh by IED

Sgt. Carlos J. Gil, 30, of Orlando, Florida, died February 18, in Humaniyuh, Iraq from injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device detonation. Gil was assigned to the 377th Transportation Company, 181st Transportation Battalion, Mannheim, Germany.

Soldier Killed in Tal Afar by IED

Sgt. Frank B. Hernandez, 21, of Phoenix, Arizona, died February 17 in Tal Afar, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Hernandez was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Soldier Killed in Mosul by IED

Sgt. Adam J. Plumondore, 22, of Gresham, Oregon, died February 16 in Mosul, Iraq, when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Plumondore was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Killed in Vehicle Accident

Spc. Katrina L. Bell-Johnson, 32, of Orangeburg, South Carolina, died February 16 in Ba'qubah, Iraq, when she was involved in a vehicle accident. Bell-Johnson was assigned to the Army's 418th Transportation Company, 180th Transportation Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed in Mosul

Sgt. Christopher M. Pusateri, 21, of Corning, New York, died February 16 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries sustained from enemy forces using small arms fire.  Pusateri was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Soldier Killed in Al Ramadi

Staff Sgt. Jason R. Hendrix, 28, of Claremore, Oklahoma, died February 16 in Al Ramadi, Iraq, when an explosion occurred while he was conducting combat operations. Hendrix was assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey, Korea.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Spc. Justin B. Carter, 21, of Mansfield, Missouri, died February 16 in Forward Operating Base McKenzie, Iraq, from non-combat related injuries. Carter was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Benning, Georgia.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Two MS Guard Members Killed in Roll Over

Two members of the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), McComb, Mississippi, died February 16 in Forward Operating Base Iskandariyah, Iraq, when a roadway collapsed, causing their vehicle to roll over. Killed were:

Sgt. Timothy R. Osbey, 34, of Magnolia Mississippi.

Spc. Joseph A. Rahaim, 22, of Magnolia, Mississippi.

Pfc. Michael A. Arciola, 20, of Elmsford, New York, died February 15 in Al Ramadi, Iraq, from injuries sustained from enemy small arms fire. Arciola was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea.

Soldier Killed in Ba'qubah by IED

Sgt. 1st Class David J.Salie, 34, of Columbus, Georgia., died February 14 in Ba'qubah, Iraq, when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device. Salie was assigned to the Army's 2d Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.

Three Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Roll Over

Three members of the Army's 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 3d Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, died February 13 in Balad, Iraq, when the vehicle they were riding in overturned. Killed were:

Spc. Dakotah L. Gooding, 21, of Des Moines, Iowa.

Sgt. Chad W. Lake, 26, of Ocala, Florida.

Sgt. Rene Knox, Jr., 22, of New Orleans, Louisiana.


Soldier Killed in Mortar Attack

Pfc. David J. Brangman, 20, of Lake Worth, Florida, died February 13 in Uvanni, Iraq, when a mortar round struck his vehicle.  Brangman was assigned to the Army's 3d Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Airman Dies Performing Rescue Mission

Staff Sgt. Ray Rangel, 29, of San Antonio, Texas, died February 13 while performing a canal rescue mission in Balad, Iraq. Rangel was assigned to the 7th Civil Engineering Squadron, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas.

Soldier Killed by IED During Clearing Operations

Staff Sgt. Kristopher L. Shepherd, 26, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died February 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated during clearing operations.  Shepherd was assigned to the 767th Ordnance Company, 63rd Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C.

MS Guard Member Killed in Vehicle Collision

Spc. Robert A. McNail, 30, of Meridian, Mississippi, died February 11 in Iskandariyah, Iraq, when his HMMVW struck another military vehicle.  McNail was assigned to the Army National Guard's 150th Combat Engineer Battalion, 155th Brigade Combat Team, Quitman, Mississippi.

Lance Cpl. Richard A. Perez, Jr., 19, of Las Vegas, Nevada, died February 10 as a result of non-hostile vehicle incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Perez was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s 6th Motor Transport Battalion, 4th Force Service Support Group, Las Vegas, Nevada.

AR Guard Member Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Staff Sgt. William T. Robbins, 31, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, died Feb. 10 in Taji, Iraq, of non-combat related injuries.  Robbins was assigned to the Army National Guard's 39th Infantry Brigade, Little Rock, Arkansas.

Sgt. Jessica M. Housby, 23, of Rock Island, Illinois, died February 9 in Route Golden, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near her convoy.  Housby was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1644th Transportation Company, Rock Falls, Illinois.

Spc. Richard M. Crane, 25, of Independence, Missouri, died February 8, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of non-combat related injuries.  Crane was assigned to the Army Reserve’s 325th Field Hospital, Independence, Missouri.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Spc. Jeffrey S. Henthorn, 25, of Choctaw, Oklahoma, died February 8 in Balad, Iraq, from non-combat related injuries.  Henthorn was assigned to the 24th Transportation Company, Fort Riley, Kansas.

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit relinquished the responsibility of providing security and stability in Iraq's western Al Anbar province to Regimental Combat Team 7 of the 1st Marine Division February 7.

Soldier Killed by IED Blast in Taji

Spc. Jeremy O. Allmon, 22, of Cleburne, Texas, died February 6 in Taji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle. Allmon was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed in Mosul

Staff Sgt. Zachary R. Wobler, 24, of Ottowa, Ohio, died February 6 in Mosul, Iraq, when his dismounted patrol encountered enemy forces using small arms fire. Wobler was assigned to the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marine Killed by Hostile Action in Babil Province

Lance Cpl. Travis M. Wichlacz, 22, of West Bend, Wisconsin, died February 5 as a result of hostile action in Babil Province, Iraq.  Wichlacz was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Two Soldiers Killed in IED Attack

Two members of the 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, died in Bayji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device hit their vehicle. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Steven G. Bayow, 42, of Colonia Yap, Federated States of Micronesia.

Sgt. Daniel Torres, 23, of Fort Worth, Texas.

Soldier Dies in Mosul from Wounds Sustained in IED Blast

Sgt. Stephen R. Sherman, 27, from Neptune, New Jersey, died February 3 in Mosul, Iraq, from wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Sherman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) Fort Lewis, Washington.

Soldier Killed in Babil Province by IED

Sgt. 1st Class Sean M. Cooley, 35, from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, died February 3 in Northern Babil Province, Iraq, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Cooley was assigned to the 150th Engineer Battalion, 155th Armor Brigade, Lucedale, Mississippi.

Two Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Capt. Sean L. Brock, 29, of Redondo Beach, California, died February 2 from wounds received as a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  He was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan.

 

Lance Cpl. Sean P. Maher, 19, of Grays Lake, Illinois, died February 2 as a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Soldier Killed in Vehicle Incident

Spc. Robert T. Hendrickson, 24, from Broken Bow, Oklahoma, died February 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained when his military vehicle overturned.  Hendrickson was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Week of

Jan 31 - Feb 4

Iraq Deployments

Approximately 2,700 soldiers with the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division deployed this week to Iraq.  This is the brigade's second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  The brigade's first rotation was from March 2003 to April 2004.  During this deployment, the 3rd Brigade will be attached to the 3rd Infantry Division as they continue to fight against terrorism.  The brigade is expected to be deployed for approximately one year.  Currently, approximately 4,300 active duty soldiers from Fort Riley are deployed in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
