Sgt. 1st Class Mark C. Warren, 44, from LaGrande, Oregon, died January 31 at Kirkuk Air Base, Iraq from non-combat related injuries.  Warren was assigned to the 3d Battalion, 116th Armor Cavalry Regiment, 116th Brigade Combat Team (Forward), LaGrande, Oregon.

Nazario Serrano, 20, of Irving, Texas, died January 30 as a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Serrano was assigned to the Combat Service Support Battalion 1, Combat Service Support Group 11, 1st Force Service Support Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Pfc. James H. Miller IV, 22, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died January 30 in Ramadi, Iraq, from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.  Miller was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503d Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea.

Sgt. Lindsey T. James, 23, of Urbana, Missouri, died January 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol.  James was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Commander Dies Aboard Ship

Lt. Cmdr. Edward E. Jack, 51, of Detroit, Michigan, died January 29, of a non-combat related incident aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard.  Jack was assigned to Commander, Destroyer Squadron Seven, home ported in San Diego, California. 


Commander Killed in Rocket Attack

Lt. Cmdr Keith E. Taylor, 47, of Irvine, California, died January 29, in a rocket attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.  Taylor was assigned to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Central Command, Iraq Detachment.

Marine Killed in Non-Hostile Incident in Al Anbar Province

Sgt. Andrew K. Farrar, Jr., 31, of Weymouth, Massachusetts, died January 28 due to a non-hostile related incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Farrar was assigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Accident Claims Helicopter Crew

Two members of the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died January 28, in a helicopter accident in Baghdad, Iraq. The helicopter, which was an OH-58 Kiowa Warrior, reportedly crashed about 8 p.m. local time in the southwestern portion of the city.  Killed were:

Capt. Orlando A. Bonilla, 27, of Killeen, Texas.

Chief Warrant Officer Charles S. Jones, 34, of Lawtey, Florida.


Soldier Killed in Baghdad by IED

Staff Sgt. Joseph E.Rodriguez, 25 of Las Cruces, New Mexico, died January 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device struck his armored vehicle.  Rodriguez was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies from Injuries Sustained in Vehicle Collision

Sgt. 1st Class Mickey E. Zaun, 27, of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, died January 28 in Mosul, Iraq, from injuries sustained in a collision between two armored vehicles.  Zaun was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injury

Pfc. Stephen A. Castellano, of Long Beach, California, died January 28 in Mosul, Iraq, from a non-combat related injury.  He was born February 1, 1984, and died just four days before his 21st birthday.  Castellano was assigned to 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division (Light) from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Three LA Guard Members Killed in IED Blast

The soldiers died January 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device struck a nearby vehicle.  All were assigned to the Army National Guard's 1088th Engineer Battalion, 256th Brigade Combat Team, New Roads, Louisiana. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Jonathan R. Reed, 25, of Opelousas, Louisiana.

Spc. Michael S. Evans II, 22, Marrero, Louisiana.

Spc. Christopher J. Ramsey, 20, of Batchelor, Louisiana.


AR Guard Member Killed in Baghdad

Spc. Lyle W. Rymer II, 24, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, died January 28 in Baghdad, Iraq, when he was shot by enemy forces.  Rymer was assigned to the Army National Guard's 239th Engineer Company, 39th Infantry Brigade, Booneville, Arkansas.

The Department of Defense has released the names of 30 service personnel that died January 26 when the CH-53E helicopter they were in crashed near Ar Rutbah, Iraq.

Four Reservists Killed in Al Anbar Province

Four members of the Marine Corps Reserve’s 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia died January 26 as a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province.  Killed were:

Sgt. Kyle W. Childress, 29, of Terre Haute, Indiana, died January 21 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds received in Ad Duluiyah, Iraq, when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire. Childress was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Capt. Joe F. Lusk II, 25, of Reedley, California, died January 21 in Camp Buehring, Kuwait, of non-combat related injuries.  In a tribute contained in the May 4, 2006 edition of Frontline, the official newspaper of the 3rd Battalion, it was reported that during pre-combat training in Kuwait, Lusk and his team of AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopters were conducting gunnery training when his aircraft hit the ground and he suffered fatal injuries.  The incident marked the first loss to a tragic training accident for his unit.  Lusk was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The Marines were from the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.  They were:

Lance Cpl. Julio C. Cisneros Alvarez, 22, of Pharr, Texas, died January 6 as result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Cisneros Alvarez was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Sgt. Zachariah S. Davis, 25, of Twentynine Palms, California, died January 6 as result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Davis was assigned to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Seven Army Guard Members Killed in IED Attack - Six from Louisiana, One from New York

Six members of the Army National Guard's 256th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized), Lafayette, Louisiana, died January 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, at around 6 p.m. when an improvised explosive device struck their Bradley fighting vehicle while conducting a patrol . Killed were:

Sgt. Christopher J. Babin, 27, of Houma, Louisiana.

Spc. Bradley J. Bergeron, 25, of Houma, Louisiana.

Sgt. 1st Class Kurt J. Comeaux, 34, of Raceland, Louisiana.

Spc. Huey P. L. Fassbender, 24, of LaPlace, Louisiana.

Spc. Armand L. Frickey, 20, Houma, Louisiana.

Spc. Warren A. Murphy, 29, of Marrero, Louisiana.

The seventh soldier killed in the incident was:

Pfc. Kenneth G. Vonronn, 20, of Bloomingburg, New York. Vonronn was assigned to the Army National Guard’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division, New York, New York.

As reported by American Forces Press Service (AFPS)

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2004 -- Insurgents using improvised explosive devices killed five U.S. service members in three separate attacks in Iraq today, military officials in Baghdad reported.

Three Task Force Baghdad soldiers were killed when a bomb went off at about 11 a.m. north of Baghdad. At about 11:30 a.m., a 1st Infantry Division soldier was killed when insurgents detonated an explosive device near Balad (see Wooten below).

Three other soldiers were wounded in those attacks and were taken to military hospitals. No report was available on their condition.

In Fallujah, a U.S. Marine with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed while conducting security operations in Anbar province.

Today's violence against U.S. service members comes as Iraqi and U.S. forces have stepped up security measures in preparation for elections later this month.

Pvt. Cory R. Depew, 21, of Beech Grove, Indiana, died January 4 in Mosul, Iraq, when his Stryker military vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade. Depew was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.


Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in October

Sgt. Bennie J. Washington, 25, of Atlanta, Georgia, died January 4 in Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of injuries sustained October 14 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when his military vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade. Washington was assigned to the 44th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Howze, Korea.


Soldier Killed in Balad by IED

Pfc. Curtis L. Wooten III, 20, of Spanaway, Washington, died January 4 in Balad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle. Wooten was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Sgt. Jeremy R. Wright, 31, of Shelbyville, Indiana, died January 3 in Asadabad, Afghanistan, when his military vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. Wright was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group Fort Lewis, Washington.

Sgt. Thomas E. Houser, 22, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died January 3 as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Houser was assigned to 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Sgt. 1st Class Pedro A. Munoz, 47, of Aquada, Puerto Rico, died January 2 in Shindand, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained January 1 when his patrol encountered enemy fire. Munoz was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Spc. Jeff LeBrun, 21, from Buffalo, New York, died January 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his military vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. LeBrun was assigned to the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.
