Lance Cpl. Jason E. Smith, 21, of Phoenix, Arizona, died December 31 as result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Smith was assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

WA Guard Member Killed in Baghdad

Sgt. Damien T. Ficek, 26, from Pullman, Washington, died December 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his patrol was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire. Ficek was assigned to the Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, Spokane, Washington.

Soldier Killed in Mosul in an Attack on Post

Pfc. Oscar Sanchez, 19, from Modesto, California, died December 29 in Mosul, Iraq, when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device struck his observation post.  Sanchez was assigned to 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

LA Guard Member Dies from Injuries Sustained in Baghdad on December 16

Spc. Craig L. Nelson, 21, from Bossier City, Louisiana, died December 29 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, of injuries sustained December 16 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle. Nelson was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 156th Armor Regiment, Shreveport, Louisiana.

Reservist Dies in a Non-Hostile Incident in Al Anbar Province

Staff Sgt. Jason A. Lehto, 31, of Mount Clemens, Michigan, died December 28 in a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Lehto was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s Marine Wing Support Group 47, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Mt. Clemens, Michigan.

Soldier Struck and Killed in Vehicle Incident

Staff Sgt. Nathaniel J. Nyren, 31, from Reston, Virginia, died in Baghdad, Iraq on December 28, when a civilian vehicle struck his military vehicle. Nyren was assigned to the Army’s 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas.

Seaman Dies from Non-Hostile Gun Shot Wound

Navy Seaman Pablito Pena Briones, Jr., 22, of Anaheim, California, died December 28 of a non-hostile gun shot wound in Fallujah, Iraq. Briones was assigned to 1st Marine Division Detachment, Naval Medical Center San Diego.

Soldier Dies from Injuries Sustained in IED Blast

Spc. Jose A. Rivera-Serrano, 26, from Mayaquez, Puerto Rico, died December 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle. The AFIS reported that four other soldiers were wounded in the incident.  Rivera-Serrano was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas. 


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

WI Guard Member Dies from Injuries Received in Samarra

Staff Sgt. Todd D. Olson, 36, from Loyal, Wisconsin, died December 27 in the 67th Combat Support Hospital in Tikrit, Iraq from wounds sustained in Samarra, Iraq on December 26, when an improvised explosive device detonated. Another soldier was wounded in the incident according to an AFIS report.  Olson was assigned to the National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 128th Infantry Regiment, Neillsville, Wisconsin.

Olson was an infantry squad leader and a lifelong resident of Loyal, WI.  Olson graduated from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1992 and was a vice president and agricultural loan officer with M&I Bank in Neillsville, WI.  He also served as president of his local Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce.  Olson joined the WI-ARNG after high school and served 17 years until his death.  In June 2004, Olson left Wisconsin with his unit for pre-deployment training at Camp Shelby, MS.  The unit deployed to Iraq in November.  He died Dec. 27, 2004, in the 67th Combat Support Hospital, Tikrit, Iraq, after being wounded the night before by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Samarra.  He had called home on Christmas and was mortally wounded the next day.  He was the second WI-ARNG member killed in Iraq, and one of 680 soldiers in his battalion.  Todd Olson is survived by his wife, Nancy Olson, and their four children, Trevor, 17, Jesse, 16, Cody, 13, and Kasey, 5.

Three Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Three members of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, died December 23 as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Killed were:

   

Lance Cpl. Eric Hillenburg, 21, of Marion, Indiana.

Lance Cpl. James R. Phillips, 21, of Hillsboro, Florida.

Cpl. Raleigh C. Smith, 21, of Lincoln, Montana.

LA Guard Member Killed in Baghdad by IED

1st Lt. Christopher W. Barnett, 32, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana died December 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle. Barnett was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 156th Armor Regiment, 256th Brigade Combat Team, Shreveport, Louisiana.

Inside Attack on Mess Hall in Mosul Takes Heavy Toll on U.S. Troops

An explosion at a dining facility at Forward Operating Base Marez in southwest Mosul on December 21 killed 22 people, and injured another 72. Officials said 14 of the 22 killed were U.S. military service members. Four U.S. civilians and four Iraqi security force troops were also killed. Of the 72 wounded, 51 are U.S. service members. The other 21 include U.S. and foreign civilians and Iraqi security force troops.

Below is a list of the 14 service members killed in the attack.

 U.S. ARMY

The following soldiers were from Fort Belvoir, Virginia:

Spc. Cory M. Hewitt, 26, of Stewart, Tennessee. Hewitt was assigned to the 705th Ordnance Company, Fort Polk, Louisiana.

 

Sgt. Maj. Robert D. O'Dell, 38, of Manassas, Virginia. O'Dell was assigned to the United States Army Intelligence & Security Command, Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

The following soldiers were from Fort Lewis, Washington:

Pfc. Lionel Ayro, 22, of Jeanerette, Louisiana. Ayro was assigned to the 73rd Engineer Company, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Spc. Jonathan Castro, 21, of Corona, California. Castro was assigned to the 73rd Engineer Company, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Capt. William W. Jacobsen Jr., 31, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Jacobsen was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Staff Sgt. Robert S. Johnson, 23, of Castro Valley, California. Johnson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Staff Sgt. Julian S. Melo, 47, of Brooklyn, New York. Melo was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.

Staff Sgt. Darren D. VanKomen, 33, of Bluefield, West Virginia. VanKomen was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington.


 U.S. ARMY RESERVE

Sgt. 1st Class Paul D. Karpowich, 30, of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. Karpowich was assigned to the Army Reserve's 2nd Battalion, 390th Infantry Regiment, Webster, New York.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Maine

 

Spc. Thomas J. Dostie, 20, of Sommerville, Maine. Dostie was assigned to the Army National Guard's 133rd Engineer Battalion, Portland, Maine.

Sgt. Lynn R. Poulin, Sr., 47, of Freedom, Maine. Poulin was assigned to the Army National Guard's 133rd Engineer Battalion, Belfast, Maine.

Virginia

 

Spc. Nicholas C. Mason, 20, of King George, Virginia. Mason was assigned to the Army National Guard's 276th Engineer Battalion, West Point, Virginia.

Spc. David A. Ruhren, 20, of Stafford, Virginia. Ruhren was assigned to the Army National Guard's 276th Engineer Battalion, West Point, Virginia.

Chief Joel Egan Baldwin, 37, of Arlington, Virginia. Baldwin was assigned to Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 77, Gulfport, Mississippi.

Two Reservists Die from Injuries Received in Babil

Two members of the Marine Corps Reserve’s 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, died December 13 from wounds received as a result of enemy action in Babil Province, Iraq. Killed were:

Pfc. Brent T. Vroman, 21, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Lance Cpl. Richard D. Warner, 22, of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Reservist Killed in Vehicle Accident

Sgt. Tina S. Time, 22, from Tucson, Arizona, died December 13 near Cedar, Iraq, when she was involved in a vehicle accident. Time was assigned to the Army Reserve's 208th Transportation Company, Tucson, Arizona.

Seven Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Six of the seven Marines killed were from the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.  They were:

Lance Cpl. Joshua W. Dickinson, 25, of Pasco, Florida, died December 12 as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Dickinson was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.

Five members of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, died December 12 as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Killed were:

    

Staff Sgt. Melvin L. Blazer, 38, of Moore, Oklahoma.

Cpl. Jason S. Clairday, 21, of Camp Fulton, Arkansas.

Sgt. Jeffrey L. Kirk, 24, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Lance Cpl. Hilario F. Lopez, 22, of Ingleside, Texas.

Cpl. Ian W. Stewart, 21, of Lake Hughes, California.

The seventh Marine killed was from the 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force.  He was:

Lance Cpl. Jeffery S. Blanton, 23, of Fayetteville, Georgia., died December 12 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Blanton was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Related Injuries

Pfc. Joshua A. Ramsey, 19, from Defiance, Ohio, died December 12 in Baghdad, Iraq, from non-combat related injuries. Ramsey was assigned to the 95th Military Police Battalion, Mannheim, Germany.

Spc. Robert W. Hoyt, 21, of Ashford, Connecticut, died December 11 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV while conducting convoy operations. Hoyt was assigned to the Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Regiment, Bristol, Connecticut.

Marines Dies from Injuries Received in Babil Province 

Cpl. Kyle J. Renehan, 21, of Oxford, Pennsylvania, December 9 in Kaiserslautern, Germany, from injuries received on November 29 as result of enemy action in Babil Province, Iraq. Renehan was assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.

Two SC Guard Members Killed in Helicopter Accident

Two members of  the 1st Battalion, 151st Aviation Regiment, South Carolina National Guard, Columbia, South Carolina died December 9 in Mosul, Iraq after being involved in an Apache helicopter accident.  Killed were:

Soldier Killed by Small Arms Fire in Baghdad

Capt. Mark N. Stubenhofer, 30, of Springfield, Virginia, died December 7 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his unit was conducting dismounted operations and was attacked by small arms fire. Stubenhofer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


Soldier Killed by IED in Khalidiyah

Sgt. 1st Class Todd C. Gibbs, 37, of Angelina, Texas, died December 7 in Khalidiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated while his unit was on a dismounted patrol. Gibbs was assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, Camp Greaves, Korea.

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Greaves, Korea, died December 5 in Habbaniyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV.  Killed were:

Pfc. Andrew M. Ward, 25, of Kirkland, Washington, died December 5 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Ward was assigned to the 44th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Howze, Korea.

Two American Soldiers Killed in Mosul

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Washington, died December 4 in Mosul, Iraq, when their Stryker military vehicle received enemy fire during convoy operations. Killed were:

Soldier Killed in Baghdad by IED

Sgt. Michael L. Boatright, 24, of Whitesboro, Texas died December 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, when he was struck by an improvised explosive device. Boatright was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed in Baqubah by IED

Sgt. Cari A. Gasiewicz, 28, of Depew, New York, died December 4 in Baqubah, Iraq, when two improvised explosive devices detonated near her convoy.  Gasiewicz was assigned to the 202nd Military Intelligence Battalion, 513th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Gordon, Georgia.

NY Guard Member Dies in Vehicle Accident

Cpl. Joseph O. Behnke, 45, of Brooklyn, New York, died December 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, when he was in a vehicle accident. Behnke was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery Regiment, Brooklyn, New York.

Cpl. Bryan S. Wilson, 22, of Otterbein, Indiana, died December 1 as result of a non-hostile vehicle incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Wilson was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.


Marine Dies From Injuries Received in Al Anbar Province

Gunnery Sgt. Javier Obleas-Prado Pena, 36, of Falls Church, Virginia, died December 1 at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, from injuries received November 25, as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Pena was assigned to 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Reservist Killed in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. Zachary A. Kolda, 23, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died December 1 as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to the Marine Forces Reserves’ 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Houston, Texas.

Spc. David M. Fisher, 21, of Green Island, New York, died December 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his unit was on patrol and the HMWWV in which he was riding rolled over. Fisher was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 101st Cavalry Regiment, Newburgh, New York.
