Soldier Killed in Baghdad Mortar Attack

Staff Sgt. Darren J. Cunningham, 40, of Groton, Massachusetts, died September 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his unit came under mortar attack. Cunningham was assigned to the 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in September 18 Attack on Convoy

Spc. Allen Nolan, 38, of Marietta, Ohio, died September 30 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, of injuries sustained on September 18 in Balad, Iraq, when his convoy vehicle struck an improvised explosive device and then came under small arms fire. Nolan was assigned to the Army Reserve's 660th Transportation Company, Zanesville, Ohio.

Soldier Dies of Injuries Received from IED Blast

Pfc. Joshua K. Titcomb, 20, of Somerset, Kentucky, died September 29 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries sustained on September 28 when an improvised explosive device exploded near his military vehicle.  Titcomb was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 72 Armor Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea.


Soldier Dies From Injuries Received September 22 in a Vehicle Incident

Staff Sgt. Mike A. Dennie, 31, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, died September 29 in Balad, Iraq, from injuries sustained on September 22 in Baghdad, Iraq, when the driver of his military vehicle pulled off the road and lost control, causing it to roll over. Dennie was assigned to the 106th Finance Battalion from Kitzingen, Germany.

UT Guard Member Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Staff Sgt. Alan L. Rogers, 49, of Kearns, Utah, died September 29 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of non-combat related injuries. Rogers was assigned to the Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment, West Jordan, Utah.

Soldier Dies From Injuries Sustained in Grenade Attack

Sgt. Tyler D. Prewitt, 22, of Phoenix, Arizonia, died September 28 in Landstuhl, Germany, from injuries sustained in Baqubah, Iraq, on September 24 when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle and exploded. Prewitt was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27, 2004 -- Two Americans were killed in Iraq today, one day after Secretary of State Colin Powell said the insurrection in the country "is getting worse."

Two 1st Infantry Division soldiers died in two separate incidents near Balad, officials said. The first was the result of a traffic accident. A patrol vehicle swerved to miss a truck. It overturned, and two soldiers were injured. They were evacuated, and one died later.

The second soldier was killed when anti-Iraqi forces attacked his patrol as it was returning from the scene of the accident.

Marine Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Pfc. Kenneth L. Sickels, 20, of Apple Valley, California, died September 27 due to a non-combat related incident in Al Anbar Privince, Iraq.   Sickels was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California.

Soldier Killed in Vehicle Incident

Spc. Gregory A. Cox, 21, of Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, died September 27 in Balad, Iraq, when his military vehicle was unintentionally run off the road by a civilian vehicle causing it to rollover.  Cox was assigned to 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.


Soldier Killed by Sniper While on Post

Sgt. 1st Class Joselito O. Villanueva, 36, of Los Angeles, California, died September 27 in Balad, Iraq, when he was shot by a sniper while at an observation post. Villanueva was assigned to the 9th Engineer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Capt. Eric L. Allton, 34, of Houston, Texas, died September 26 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when he was struck by a mortar round.  Allton was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey, Korea.

Marine Killed in Attack in Al Anbar Province

Spc. Robert Oliver Unruh, 25, of Tucson, Arizona, died September 25 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, when enemy forces using small arms fire attacked his unit.  Unruh was assigned to the  44th Engineer Battalion, Camp Howze, Korea.

Oregon Guard Member Killed in IED Attack

Spc. David W. Johnson, 37, of Portland, Oregon, died September 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle. Johnson was assigned to the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry Regiment, Cottage Grove, Oregon.


PA Guard Member Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries 

Spc. Clifford L. Moxley, Jr., 51, of  New Castle, Pennsylvania, died September 25 in Baghdad, Iraq, of non-combat related injuries.  Moxley was assigned to the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment, Berwick, Pennsylvania.

Three Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Three Marines died September 24 as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  They were all members of the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.   

Two of the Marines killed were assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.  They were:

Lance Cpl. Aaron Boyles, 24, of Alameda, California.

Lance Cpl. Ramon Mateo, 20, of Suffolk, New York.

The third Marine killed in the fighting was

Sgt. Timothy Folmar, 21, of Sonora, Texas.  Folmar was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.


Marine Killed in Vehicle Accident in Rutbah

2nd Lieutenant Ryan Leduc, 28, of Pana, Illinois died September 24 as result of a non-combat vehicle accident in Rutbah, Iraq.  Leduc was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Marine Killed in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl Vincent Sullivan, died September 23, 2004.  The DoD did not issue a release regarding Sullivan's death, however, the American Forces Press Service reported that a U.S. Marine with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in Baghdad on this date while conducting security and stability operations in the Anbar province in Iraq.  We assume that Sullivan was the Marine involved in that incident.

Sgt. Benjamin K. Smith, 24, of Carterville, Illinois, died September 22 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Smith was assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California.

Soldier Killed by Sniper While on Patrol

Pfc. Adam J. Harris, 21, of Abilene, Texas, died September 22 in Mosul, Iraq, when he was shot by a sniper while on patrol. Harris was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.


Vehicle-Based IED Kills Soldier at Post

Sgt. Skipper Soram, 23, of Kolonia Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, died Sept. 22 in Baghdad, Iraq, when a vehicle-based improvised explosive device detonated near his security post.  The AFPS reported that four soldiers were also injured, three seriously, in the blast that occurred near a traffic checkpoint.  Soram was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Soldier Killed by IED in Tikrit While on Patrol

Staff Sgt. Lance J. Koenig, 33, of Fargo, North Dakota, died September 22 in Tikrit, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting a dismounted patrol.  The AFPS reported that the blast occurred around 9:15 a.m. Koenig was assigned to the Army National Guard's 141st Engineer Battalion, Jamestown, North Dakota.

Sgt. Foster L. Harrington, 31, of Ft. Worth, Texas, died September 20 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Harrington was assigned to the Marine Corps Reserve’s 3rd Force Reconnaissance Company, 4th Marine Division, Mobile, Alabama.

Soldier Dies of Injuries Received in Shargat

Spc. Joshua J. Henry, 21, of Avonmore, Pennsylvania, died September 20 in Tikrit, Iraq, of injuries sustained when his convoy was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire in Sharqat, Iraq. Henry was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23, 2004 - Officials announced September 22 that three U.S. soldiers had been killed and 14 others injured as a result of eight incidents on Sept. 20 where Afghan National Army and coalition forces had engaged anti- coalition militia.

Soldier Killed in Attack on Post

Spc. Wesley R. Wells, 21, of Libertyville, Illinois, died September 20, in Naka, Afghanistan, when his observation post was fired on by anti-coalition militia forces. Wells was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Two Special Forces Members Killed in Ambush

Two members of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina died September 20, in Shkin, Afghanistan when their patrol vehicle was ambushed by enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Robert S. Goodwin, 35, of Albany, Georgia.

Staff Sgt. Tony B. Olaes, 30, of Walhalla, South Carolina.

Sgt. Brandon E. Adams, 22, of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, died September 19 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., of injuries sustained in Fallujah, Iraq, on Feb. 16 when a grenade exploded as he was clearing a house.  Adams was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.

Enemy Action Claims Two Soldiers in Al Anbar Province

Two members of the 4th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died September 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device hit their convoy vehicle.  On September 19, 2004, the American Forces Press Service reported that a car bomb attack had occurred late September 18 in Baghdad killing two Task Force Baghdad soldiers and wounding eight more. The Task Force Baghdad soldiers killed and injured Saturday were en route to the site of an earlier attack when the bomb exploded around 4 p.m. Three vehicles were also destroyed in that attack. Killed were:

Pfc. James W. Price, 22, of Cleveland, Tennessee.

Sgt. Thomas C. Rosenbaum, 25, of Hope, Arkansas.

Cpl. Steven A. Rintamaki, 21, of Lynnwood, Washington, died September 16 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Rintamaki was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

 

1st Lt. Andrew K. Stern, 24, of Germantown, Tennessee, died September 16 from injuries received due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Stern was assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.

GA Guard Member Dies of Non-Combat Related Illness

Sgt. Foster Pinkston, 47, of Warrenton, Georgia, died September 16, in Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, from a non-combat related illness.  Pinkston was assigned to the Army National Guard’s 878th Engineer Battalion, Augusta, Georgia.

Six Marines Die in Al Anbar Province

Four of the six Marines killed September 13 were from the 1st Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.  They were:

Lance Cpl. Dominic C. Brown, 19, of Austin Texas, died September 13 due to a non-combat related incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Brown was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Three of the Marines killed in Al Anbar Province September 13 were members of the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. They were:

Cpl. Jaygee Meluat, 24, of Tamuning, Guam.

Lance Cpl. Mathew D. Puckett, 19, of Mason, Texas.

Cpl. Adrian V. Soltau, 21, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The two other Marines killed September 13 were from the 2nd Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.  They were:

 

Lance Cpl. Michael J. Halal, 22, of Glendale, Arizona, died September 13 due to a non-combat related vehicle accident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Halal was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Lance Cpl. Cesar F. Machado-Olmos, 20, of Spanish Fork, Utah, died September 13 due to a non-combat related vehicle accident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Machado-Olmos was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED in Baghdad

Two members of the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died September 13 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their observation post. Killed were:

Sgt. Carl Thomas, 29, of Phoenix, Arizona.

Sgt. Guy S. Hagy, Jr., 31, of Lodi, California.

Two Oregon Guard Members Killed in Attack

Two members of the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, Corvallis, Oregon, died September 13 in Taji, Iraq when their military vehicle came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire and an improvised explosive device.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. David J. Weisenburg, 26, of Portland, Oregon.

Spc. Benjamin W. Isenberg, 27, of Sheridan, Oregon.

1st Lt. Alexander E. Wetherbee, 27, of Fairfax, Virginia, died September 12 from injuries received from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Wetherbee was assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Pfc. Jason T. Poindexter, 20, of San Angelo, Texas, died September 12 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Poindexter was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Dies in Fallujah

Pfc. Jason L. Sparks, 19, of Monroeville, Ohio, died September 8 in Fallujah, Iraq, when his platoon was engaged in direct fire.  Sparks was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, Camp Casey, Korea.


Soldier Dies in Vehicle Roll Over

Spc. Michael A. Martinez, 29, of Juan Diaz, Puerto Rico, died September 8 in Baqubah, Iraq, when his military vehicle rolled over.  Martinez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery from Bamberg, Germany.

Spc. Lauro G. DeLeon, Jr., 20, of Floresville, Texas, died September 8 in Balad, Iraq when improvised explosive devices detonated near his convoy.  DeLeon was assigned to the Army Reserve's 644th Transportation Company, Beaumont, Texas.

Spc. Chad H. Drake, 23, of Garland Texas, died September 7 in Baghdad, Iraq when his patrol vehicle came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Drake was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies of Injuries Sustained in IED Attack

Spc. Clarence Adams III, 28, of Richmond, Virginia, died September 7 of injuries sustained on September 6 in Baghdad, Iraq when his high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.  Adams was assigned to the 91st Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed in Sadr City

Spc. Yoe M. Aneiros, 20, of Newark, New Jersey, died September 7 in Sadr City when his patrol vehicle came under attack by enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades.  Aneiros was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.


MP Killed by Enemy Forces

1st Lt. Timothy E. Price, 25, of Midlothian, Virginia, died September 7 when he came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire.  Price was assigned to the Army's 127th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, V Corps, Hanau, Germany.

Seven Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Seven members of the U.S. Marine Corps died September 6 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  All were members of the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

Six of the Marines killed were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.  They were:

Soldier Killed in Attack on Convoy

Spc. Brandon M. Read, 21, of Greenville, Tennessee, died September 6 in Qayyarah West, Iraq, when his convoy came under attack by enemy forces using an improvised explosive device.  Read was assigned to the 125th Transportation Company from Lexington, Kentucky.


Two Soldiers Killed - Including Texas Guard Member - in Baghdad Attacks

Staff Sgt. Elvis Bourdon, 36, of Youngstown, Ohio, died September 6 in Baghdad when his military vehicle came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire and grenades.  Bourdon was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas.

Spc. Tomas Garces, 19, of Weslaco, Texas, died September 6 in Baghdad, Iraq when his convoy was attacked by enemy forces using an improvised explosive device.  Garces was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1836th Transportation Company from Fort Bliss, Texas.

Reservist Killed by IED

Pfc. Devin J. Grella, 21, of Medina, Ohio, died September 6 in Iraq after an improvised explosive device exploded near his convoy vehicle.  Grella was assigned to the Army Reserve's 706th Transportation Company from Mansfield, Ohio.

Airman Dies From Injuries in Vehicle Incident

Capt. John J. Boria, 29, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, died September 6 from injuries he received in an all terrain vehicle accident in Doha, Qatar.  Boria was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and was assigned to the 911th Air Refueling Squadron, Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota.

Soldier Killed by IED in Khalidiya

Staff Sgt. Gary A. Vaillant, 41, of Trujillo, Puerto Rico, died September 5 in Khalidiya, Iraq, when his tank ran over an improvised explosive device.  Vaillant was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 72 Armor Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea.


Soldier Killed in Attack in Baghdad

Pfc. Ryan M. McCauley, 20, of Lewisville, Texas, died September 5 in Baghdad when his patrol came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire.  McCauley was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two IL Guard Members Killed in Mortar Attack

Two members of the Army National Guard's 1544th Transportation Company, Paris, Illinois died September 5 in Baghdad, Iraq during a mortar attack. Killed were:

Sgt. Shawna M. Morrison, 26, of Champaign, Illinois.

Sailor Killed in Attack on Work Area

Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric L. Knott, 21, of Grand Island, Nebraska, was killed September 4 when the area in which he was working was struck by enemy fire.  Knott died of shrapnel wounds. Knott was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4, Port Hueneme, California.

Four Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Four members of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center died September 3 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  They were all members of the 1st Marine Division, I Expeditionary Force.

Three of the Marines killed were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.  They were:

Capt. Alan Rowe, 35, of Hagerman, Idaho. 

Lance Cpl. Nicholas Wilt, 23, of Tampa, Florida. 

1st Lieutenant Ronald Winchester, 25, of Rockville Center, New York.

The fourth Marine killed was:

Lance Cpl. Nicholas Perez, 19, of Austin Texas. Perez was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.

Soldier Killed in Hawijah

Spc. Joseph C. Thibodeaux, 24, of Lafayette, Louisiana, died September 1 in Hawijah, Iraq when his patrol came under enemy attack.  Thibodeaux was assigned to the Army's Headquarters and Headquarters Company 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
