IED Kills Member of Special Forces

Staff Sgt. Aaron N. Holleyman, 26, of Glasgow, Montana, died August 30 in Khutayiah, Iraq when his military vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.  Holleyman was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Marine Killed in Babil Province

Sgt. Edgar E. Lopez, 27, of Los Angeles, California died August 28 due to enemy action in Babil Province, Iraq.  Lopez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Airman Killed in Fighting Near Mosul

Airman 1st Class Carl L. Anderson, Jr., 21, of Georgetown, South Carolina, died August 29 as a result of enemy action near Mosul, Iraq.  Anderson was assigned to the 3rd Logistics Readiness Squadron, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska.

Marine Killed in Vehicle Incident

Lance Cpl. Nickalous N. Aldrich, 21, of Austin, Texas died August 27 from a non-hostile vehicle accident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Aldrich was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Dies of Non-Combat Related Injuries

Spc. Omead H. Razani, 19, of Los Angeles, California, died August 27 in Habbaniyah, Iraq of non-combat related injuries.  Razani was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Greaves, Korea.


 U.S. ARMY RESERVE

IED Claims Life of Army Reservist in Fallujah

Pfc. Luis A. Perez, 19, of Theresa, New York, died August 27 in Fallujah, Iraq, when his convoy vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.  Perez was assigned to the Army Reserve's 223rd Transportation Company, Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Marine Killed in Babil Province

Cpl. Barton R. Humlhanz, 23, of Hellertown, Pennsylvania, died August 26 from injuries received due to enemy action in Babil Province, Iraq.  Humlhanz was assigned to Marine Expeditionary Unit Service Support Group 14, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


Marine Killed in An Najaf

Pfc. Nicholas M. Skinner, 20, of Davenport, Iowa died August 26 from injuries received due to enemy action in An Najaf, Iraq.  Skinner was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Marine Killed as Fighting Erupts in An Najaf

Lance Cpl. Alexander S. Arredondo, 20, of Randolph, Massachusetts, died August 25 as a  result of enemy action in An Najaf, Iraq.  Arredondo was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.


 ARMY RESERVES

Reservist Killed When Tractor-Trailer Rolls Over

Spc. Charles L. Neeley, 19, of Mattoon, Illinois, died August 25 in Tikrit, Iraq, when his tractor-trailer rolled over as he attempted to access a pontoon bridge. Neely was assigned to the Army Reserve's 454th Transportation Company, Columbus, Ohio.


Enemy Mortars Hit Camp Killing Soldier

Spc. Marco D. Ross, 20, of Memphis, Tennessee, died August 25 in Baghdad, Iraq when enemy mortars attacked his camp.  Ross was assigned to the Army's 115th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Marine Killed by Enemy Action in Al Anbar Province

Lance Cpl. Jacob R. Lugo, 21, of Flower Mound, Texas, died August 24 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Lugo was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad Attack

Staff Sgt. Donald N. Davis, 42, of Saginaw, Michigan, died August 24 in Fallujah, Iraq, when an M915A tractor and an M106A2 tanker trailer rolled over an embankment. Davis was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve's 660th Transportation Company, Zanesville, Ohio.

Soldier Killed in Baghdad Attack

Staff Sgt. Robert C. Thornton, Jr., 35, of Rainbow City, Alabama, died August 23 in Baghdad, Iraq when his patrol came under rocket-propelled grenade attack. Thornton was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Cpl. Christopher Belchik, 30, of Jersey, Illinois, died August 22 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Belchik was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Mississippi Guard Member Killed in Mosul

2nd Lt. Matthew R. Stovall, 25, of Horn Lake, Mississippi, died August 22 in Mosul, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device exploded near his vehicle.  Stovall was assigned to the Army National Guard's 367th Maintenance Company, 298th Corps Support Battalion, Philadelphia, Mississippi.

Al Anbar Province Fighting Claims Four Marines

Four members of the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force were killed August 21 in Al Anbar Province.  They were:

Cpl. Nicanor Alvarez, 22, of San Bernardino, California died August 21 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Alvarez was assigned to of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Lance Cpl. Seth Huston, 19, Perryton, Texas, died August 21 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Huston was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Two members of the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California died August 21 from injuries received from to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Killed were:

Sgt. Jason Cook, 25, of Okanogan, Washington.

Pfc. Nachez Washalanta, 21, of Bryan, Oklahoma.


Marine Killed in Vehicle Incident

Gunnery Sgt. Edward T. Reeder, 32, of Camp Verde, Arizona, died August 21 in a non-combat related vehicle incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Reeder was assigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion, 1st Force Service Support Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.


 U.S. ARMY

Soldier Killed in Baghdad in Grenade Attack

Pfc. Kevin A. Cuming, 22, of North White Plains, New York, died August 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his patrol came under rocket-propelled grenade attack.  Cuming was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

IED Claims Two Ohio Army Guard Members

Two members of the Army National Guard's 216th Engineer Battalion, Hamilton, Ohio, died August 20 near Samarra, Iraq when an improvised explosive device exploded near their vehicle.  Killed were:

1st Lt. Charles L. Wilkins III, 38, of Columbus, Ohio.

Pfc. Ryan A. Martin, 22, of Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Reservist Killed as Fighting Continues in Al Anbar Province

Cpl. Brad P. McCormick, 23, of Overton, Tennessee, died August 19 from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  McCormick was assigned to the Marine Corps Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Nashville, Tennessee.

Fighting in Al Anbar Province Claims Three Marines

Three Marines were killed August 18th in Al Anbar Province.  One Marine was from the 2nd Marine Division, II Expeditionary Force, another was from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and the third was from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Killed were:

Sgt. Richard M. Lord, 24, of Jacksonville, Florida, died August 18 from injuries received due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Lord was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Sgt. Harvey E. Parkerson III, 27, Yuba City, California, died August 18 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Parkerson was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), Camp Pendleton, California.


Marine Dies in Vehicle Incident

Lance Cpl. Dustin R. Fitzgerald, 22, of Huber Heights, Ohio, died August 18 in a non-combat related vehicle incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Fitzgerald was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/2, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


 U.S. ARMY

Soldier Killed at Checkpoint

Pfc. Henry C. Risner, 26, of Golden, Colorado, died August 18 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his checkpoint came under enemy small arms fire.  Risner was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.


Soldier Falls to Enemy Fire in Sadr City

Spc. Jacob D. Martir, 21, of Norwich, Connecticut, died August 18 in Sadr City, Iraq when his patrol came under enemy small arms fire.  Martir was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Exploding IED Claims Life of Soldier

Spc. Brandon T. Titus, 20, of Boise, Idaho, died August 17 in Baghdad, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his checkpoint.  Titus was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

Sgt. David M. Heath, 30, of LaPort, Indiana died August 16 in Sadr City, Iraq when his patrol came under small arms and rocket-propelled grenade attack.  Heath was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Three Ft. Hood Soldiers Killed in Najaf

Three members of the 1st Cavalry Division died August 15 in Najaf.  Killed were:

Two members of the Army's 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas died August 15 in Najaf, Iraq as a result of hostile fire. The soldiers were:

Spc. Mark Anthony Zapata, 27, of Edinburg, Texas,

2nd Lt. James Michael Goins, 23, of Bonner Springs, Kansas.

The third soldier was:

Pfc. Brandon R. Sapp, 21, of Lake Worth, Florida, died August 15 in Najaf, Iraq, when his M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.  Sapp was assigned to the Army's 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Killed by IED in Ar Ramabi

Daniel Michael Shepherd, 23, of Elyria, Ohio, died August 15, in Ar Ramabi, Iraq, when his M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.  Shepherd was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment from Fort Riley, Kansas.

Two Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Two Marines died August 13 due to hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Killed were:

Lance Cpl. Kane M. Funke, 20, of Vancouver, Washington.  Funke was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas B. Morrison, 23, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  Morrison was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

IED Claims Life of Soldier in Khalidiyah

1st Lt. Neil Anthony Santoriello, 24, of Verona, Pennsylvania, died August 13 in Khalidiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his mounted reconnaissance patrol vehicle.  Santoriello was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Soldier Dies in Helicopter Crash in Afghanistan

Sgt. Daniel Lee Galvan, 30, of Moore Oklahoma, died August 12 in Salerno, Afghanistan, when the helicopter he was in developed mechanical difficulties and crashed.  Galvan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion (Assault), 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Light Infantry Division, from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Soldier Killed in Najaf

Capt. Michael Yury Tarlavsky, 30, of Passaic, New Jersey, died August 12 in Najaf, Iraq, when his unit come under small fire and grenade attack.  Tarlavsky was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, from Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Marine Helicopter Goes Down in Al Anbar Province Killing Two

Two Marines died August 11, when their helicopter crashed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Both men were from Virginia.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. John R. Howard, 26, of Covington, Virginia.  Howard was assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166 (Reinforced), 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.

Lance Cpl. Tavon L. Hubbard, 24, of Reston, Virginia.  Hubbard was assigned to the Command Element, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.

Soldier Dies From Injuries Sustained in Grenade Attack

Capt. Andrew R. Houghton, 25, of Houston, Texas, died on August 9, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, of injuries sustained on July 10 in Ad Dhuha, Iraq, when a rocket propelled grenade detonated near his vehicle.  Houghton was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Air Force Civilian Dies From Injuries Sustained in Mortar Attack

Rick A. Ulbright, 49, of Waldorf, Maryland, died August 8, at Kirkuk Air Base, Iraq, from wounds received during a mortar attack.  Ulbright was assigned to the 33rd Field Investigative Squadron, Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland.

Pfc. David L. Potter, 22, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died August 7 in Baghdad, Iraq, of non combat related injuries.  Potter was assigned to the 115th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two VA Guard Members Killed in Afghanistan

Two members of the Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 29th Infantry Division (Light Infantry), Winchester, Virginia died August 7 in Ghazikel, Afghanistan when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.  Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Crag W. Cherry, 39, of Winchestser, Virginia.

Sgt. Bobby E. Beasley, 36, of Inwood, West Virginia.

Two Marines Die From Fighting in An Najaf

Spc. Joshua I. Bunch, 23, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, died August 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, when individuals using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades attacked his vehicle.  Bunch was assigned to the 91st Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two Marines Die From Injuries Received in An Najaf

Two members of the Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California died August 5 due to injuries received from enemy action in An Najaf, Iraq.  Killed were:

Sgt. Moses D. Rocha, 33, of Roswell, New Mexico.

Sgt. Yadir G. Reynoso, 27, of Wapato, Washington.

Soldier Dies From Injuries Sustained in IED Attack

Spc. Donald R. McCune, 20, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, died August 5, in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his patrol on August 4 in Balad, Iraq.  McCune was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, 81st Brigade Combat Team, Moses Lake, Washington.


Soldier Killed in Attack in Najaf

Pfc. Raymond J. Faulstich, Jr., 24 of Leonardtown, Maryland, died August 5 in Najaf, Iraq when individuals using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades attacked his convoy.  Faulstich was assigned to the 89th Transportation Company, 6th Transportation Battalion, 7th Transportation Group, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Two Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Two members of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California died August 4 from injuries received from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Killed were:

Gunnery Sgt. Elia P. Fontecchio, 30, of Milford, Massachusetts.

Capt. Gregory A. Ratzlaff, 36, of Olympia, Washington, died August 3 due to a non-combat related incident at Forward Operating Base Duke, Iraq.  Ratzlaff was assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, California.


 U.S. ARMY

Soldier Killed in Vehicle Incident

Sgt. Tommy L. Gray, 34, of Roswell, New Mexico, died August 3 in Taji, Iraq, when he became caught between two motor pool vehicles.  Gray was assigned to the Army's 215th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Soldier Dies From Injuries Sustained in IED Attack

Pfc. Harry N. Shondee, Jr., 19, of Ganado, Arizona, died on August 3 in Baghdad, Iraq,  from injuries he sustained on August 2 when an improvised explosive device detonated near the vehicle he was traveling in while on patrol.  Traveling with Pfc. Shondee was Spc. Onwordi,  who died on August 2.  Both men were assigned to the Army's 2nd Battalion, 12th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two Marines Killed in Al Anbar Province

Enemy action claimed two members of the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force on August 2 in Al Anbar Province.  Killed were:

 

Sgt. Juan Calderon, Jr., 26, of Weslaco, Texas, died August 2 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Calderon was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Cpl. Dean P. Pratt, 22, of Stevensville, Montana, died August 2 due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  Pratt was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.


 U.S. ARMY

Soldier Killed by IED While on Patrol in Baghdad

Spc. Justin B. Onwordi, 28, of Chandler, Arizona, died on August 2 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near the vehicle he was traveling in while on patrol.  With Spc. Onwordi, was Pfc. Shondee who died on August 3.  Both men were assigned to the Army's 2nd Battalion, 12th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Two Soldiers Killed by IED

Two members of the Army's 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany died August 1st, in Samarra, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device exploded near their guard post. Killed were:

Spc. Anthony J. Dixon, 20, of Lindenwold, New Jersey.

Spc. Armando Hernandez, 22, of Hesperia, California.
