Gunnery Sgt. Shawn A. Lane,
22, of Corning, New York, died July 28 due to enemy
action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Lane was
assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division,
I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton,
California.
Helicopter Pilot Killed While Providing Cover

Lt. Col.
David S. Greene, 39, of Raleigh,
North Carolina, died July 28 due to enemy action
in Al Anbar Province. Greene was a reservist
assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter
Squadron 775, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3D
Marine Air Wing, Marine Corps Air Station,
Miramar, California. |

Greene was
killed while providing cover for the evacuation
of critically injured Marines and close air
support for a platoon of Marines on the ground
from Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine
Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Greene, a
native of Illion, New York, was a graduate of
the Naval Academy (1986). He lived with
his wife (Sarah) and two children (Wesley and
Jena) in Shelburne, Vermont, while assigned to
Detachment A, HMLA-775, a reserve squadron based
in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Greene was a
project manager for B.F. Goodrich Aerospace, in
Vermont, and was scheduled to return to the
United States within a few weeks. (Source -

Oregon Guard Member Killed by IED
Pfc. Ken W.
Leisten, 20, of Cornelius, Oregon, died July
28, in Taji, Iraq, when his vehicle struck an improvised
explosive device. Leisten was assigned to the Army
National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry,
Corvallis, Oregon. |

Lejeune, North Carolina.
Staff Sgt. Michael J. Clark,
29, of Leesburg Lake, Florida, died July 20 due to enemy
action in Al An bar Province, Iraq. Clark was

Service Support Group 11, 1st Force Service Support
Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton,
California.
MP Killed When Vehicle Hits IED
Spc. Danny B. Daniels, II,
23, of Varney, West Virginia, died July 20, in Baghdad,
Iraq, when his patrol vehicle came under attack by small
arms fire and hit an improvised explosive device.

Washington Guard Member Killed in Attack on Vehicle
Spc. Jeremiah W. Schmunk,
21, of Richland, Washington, died July 8 in Baghdad,
Iraq, when his vehicle came under attack by rocket
propelled grenade and small arms fire. Schmunk was
assigned to the Company C, 1st Battalion, 161st
Infantry Regiment, 1st Cavalry, Washington National
Guard, Moses Lake, Washington.

Illness Claims Life of Soldier
|
 |
Spc. Julie R. Hickey, 20, of Galloway, Ohio,
was evacuated from Bagram, Afghanistan, on June 30 and
died in Landstuhl, Germany, on July 4 of complications
from a non-combat related illness. Hickey was assigned
to the Army Reserve’s 412th Civil Affairs Battalion,
Whitehall, Ohio.
Hickey
enlisted in the Army Reserve in June 2002 and
later that year completed the 11-week Civil
Affairs Specialist Course at Fort Bragg, North
Carolina. She was assigned to the 412th in
January 2003, and deployed in January 2004 to
Afghanistan with the Webster, North York-based
401st Civil Affairs Battalion in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom. Hickey was assigned
to the Provincial Reconstruction Team in
Asadabad. Provincial Reconstruction Teams serve
in regions across Afghanistan and act as a
clearinghouse for assistance to the Afghan
people and provide a secure environment for the
Afghan government to begin providing basic
services to its people. Hickey's awards include
the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal,
the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the
National Defense Service Medal and the Army
Service Ribbon.

Reserve's 330th Military Police Detachment, Sheboygan,
Wisconsin. |
