Hits Land Mine

Two soldiers and one
reservist died May 29 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when
their vehicle hit a land mine. Killed were:

Bragg, North Carolina. They were:

J. Ouellette, 37, of Needham,
Massachusetts. Ouellette was a U.S. Navy SEAL serving with
Navy Special Warfare Group Two, Little Creek,
Virginia, supporting Operating
Enduring Freedom.

Three Army Guard members were killed in a rocket

Iskandariyah, Iraq. Unger was assigned to the

Iraq, when her military vehicle hit an improvised
explosive device as it was returning to Camp Eagle.
Jackson was assigned to A Company, 115th Forward
Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood,
Texas.
Arkansas Guardsman Killed in Grenade Attack
Sgt. First Class Troy L.
Miranda, 44, of DeQueen, Arkansas, died
May 20, in Baghdad, Iraq, when a grenade was thrown
near his foot patrol. Miranda was assigned to
C Company, 1st Battalion, 153rd Infantry Regiment,
39th Brigade Combat Team, Arkansas Army National
Guard, which was assigned to the 1st Cavalry

Marine Killed After Falling Into A Canal

Pfc. Michael M. Carey,
20, of Prince George, Virginia, died May 18 in Iraq.
Apparently, Carey fell into a canal and did not
resurface. His remains were recovered on May
18. Carey was assigned to the 1st Battalion,
5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine
Expeditionary Force, at Camp Pendleton, California.
Soldier Killed by Sniper Fire While on Patrol

Staff Sgt. Joseph P. Garyantes,
34, of Rehoboth, Delaware, died May 18 by sniper
fire in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, while on a combat patrol.
Garyantes was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion,
63rd Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck,
Germany.
Soldier Electrocuted in Accident

Spc. Marcos O. Nolasco,
34, of Chino, California, died May 18 in Baji, Iraq,
as a result of an electrocution accident.
Nolasco was assigned to Battery B, 1st Battalion,
33rd Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division,
Bamberg, Germany.

Guardsman Dies From Non-Combat Related Injury

Staff Sgt. William D. Chaney,
59, of Schaumburg, Illinois, died May 18, in
Landstuhl, Germany due to a non-combat related
injury. Initial reports indicated that Chaney
was medically evacuated from Iraq to Germany for
surgery due to a sudden medical condition. He
died from complications following surgery.
Chaney was assigned to the Army National Guard,
Company B, 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment,
Chicago, Illinois. |

Reservist Killed by Suicidal Bomber
Sgt. James W. Harlan,
44, of Owensboro, Kentucky, died May 14 at Camp
Anaconda, Iraq, when a suicide bomber detonated a
car bomb next to his vehicle. Harlan was
assigned to the Army Reserve's 660th Transportation
Company, 88th Regional Readiness Command,
Zanesville, Ohio.
Soldier Dies from Non-Combat Injuries
Command Sgt. Major Edward
C. Barnhill, 50, of Shreveport,
Louisiana, died May 14, in Baghdad, Iraq, of
non-combat related injuries. Barnhill was

Soldier Struck and Killed by Dump Truck

Pfc. Jesse R. Buryj,
21, of Canton, Ohio, died May 5, in Karabala, Iraq,
when his military vehicle was struck by a dump truck
whose driver had been shot while trying to run
through a control point. Buryj was assigned to
the 66th Military Police Company, Fort Lewis,
Washington. |
Note: The PBS news show "NOW," has determined
that the military's initial explanation as to the
cause of Pfc. Jesse Buryj's death was not accurate.
He was shot in the back, and the source was either
friendly fire or coalition forces.
